wow. I didn't realize this was such an old thread.

No sign of payment issues in PayPal

Before the last 24 hours, I have never seen Bounced as a Payment Status,
either in my Orders Placed or Orders Received. Now, however, it has occurred
twice. And I've been selling for over 15 years.

In my Orders Received, the order from a new buyer from Canada, who previously
had positive FB of 5 and no negatives or neutral, changed from Received to Bounced
the previous evening. In this case, I couldn't find any payment activity
regarding the order whatsoever in my PayPal account, so the jury's still
out on that one. I've contacted the buyer, and we're still ironing out
what happened.

But then, this morning, on an order from a buyer with over 130 positive FB (and
also no negatives or neutrals) from the USA, the Payment Status on that order
also changed from Received to Bounced. Last night, I know it was "Received" because
I happened to take a screenshot at 9:39 PM (2139 CST) for entirely different
reasons. What is more puzzling, my PayPal history shows that buyer's received
payment four days before (Sept 22nd), and nothing in that history showing that
payment being rescinded. For the record, neither does my bank account.

So my question to anyone who wants to chime in is: WTH is going on?

Upon closer read.... near the end. So this is good....

"The security researchers reported the discovered vulnerabilities to LEGO, and
the company took action to fix all issues."

I am still professionally curious about the scans....

A report has recently surfaced of a possible data breach on our website, BrickLink.com.
We can assure you, our members, that we have seen no evidence of any breach of

been compromised.

A short while ago, we were approached by a third party who offered their services
to fix several potential security loopholes they had identified. This third party
is not one of our suppliers and we did not request them to provide any analysis
or diagnosis of our systems.

When we did not engage the services of this third party, they apparently released
this “news” that a security breach could have happened on our site. Whereas it
is true that there is always a small possibility that data could be compromised
on any site, we feel this report unfairly portrays our website as unsafe.

We have invested substantially in our security system and are confident in its

Can you provide some assurance us by telling us the types of security scans that
you are running on BrickLink? You don't need to name brands/names of specific
tools. Just the sorts of things you are doing...

Are you running a DAST and/or IAST scan? (Dynamic and/or interactive scans)
This sort of application scan, (run on a test environment) probes the application
for breaches such as those mentioned in the article.

A SAST (static testing) may also help in this area.
known vulnerable patterns in the code itself.

SCA - Software Composition Analysis (e.g. looking for vulnerable Open Source
Libraries incorporated into the application). I'm used to calling this Open
Source SW scanning.

Secrets -- Scanning for api key/secret or an ID/PW inadvertently left in
the code itself.

I can't see one of my shipping methods on the "Copy one of my shipping methods"
list. It happens to be the one I want. Probably the oldest one... Request a
Quote/Invoice.

FYI.. I want to create a new domestic only version vs. "anywhere". I'll
convert the existing one to international only. I want to require a phone number
on international, but not on domestic.

PS... I also see this base rate on my current method. But I don't see this
available anywhere else.

Can't stay logged in. Many attempts just to post about it.

No matter what I do I can't stay logged in. After a click or two...boom,
back to the login page.

Sales tax is determined by where the buyer is located. Is has nothing to do
with the seller's terms.

Thetefore every seller, according to their undividual statitory regulation/s
should include their terms in their splash - at the very minimum?

Why does bricklink collect sales tax on exports to the US from europe?
On the cbp website it says "Customs and Border Protection (CBP) does not collect
state sales tax on goods imported into the U.S."

  Anyone can explain?

I can try...

Though Sylvain has expressed it well, I will add some further perspective.

First, you need to break from “what you know” from your experiences there within
the EU, to fully understand. Simply put, it’s a taxation of your buyer from their
own state government. In a federalist system of governance such as ours, each
state is sovereign: free to tax and to legislate as their people’s representatives
see fit within the guidelines of our nation’s Constitution, overseen by our Supreme
Court.

Essentially, you are dealing with 50 individual states when transacting with
any given US based BrickLink member. Each state with their own laws, taxes, law
enforcement, senators, representatives, cultures, even military to an extent.
In other words, a federalist version of a constitutional republic. Funny thing,
the contemporary idea of “democracy” is actually French. But after seeing it's
application and outcome, it wasn't included in the principles our nation
formation. Timing is everything, I guess

Once over a certain level of sales into a US state, larger remote sellers are
required to collect and remit state & local sales tax. US states have amended
their laws defining the Marketplace (e.g. BrickLink) as the seller for the purposes
of sales tax collection.

If BrickLink didn't comply, BrickLink would face legal consequences.

In General, 129samot writes:
so if bricklink didnt collect the taxes what would happen?
Would the buyer get a letter to pay those taxes?

This was suggested twice a LONG time ago.

2011 - https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=543963 - Starbug
2010 - https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=475633 - FigBits

I want to be able to specify, and then have a buyer see a lot minimum purchase
quantity. e.g. (10+) Of course the minimum qty should be enforced when attempting
to add to the cart.

I'm ok with combining the minimum with bulk, or for simplicity make it either
/ or with bulk as Starbug suggested.

If not shown in the price guide to start...I'm ok with that. But I'd
much prefer the price guide also show the min. amount followed by a + . For
example (200+) say for a tiny $0.01 part where I only want to use the counting
scale.

Who sends out this newsletter and when? If it is an official BL thing I'm
certain I want to subscribe...how do I do so?

In General, qwertyboy writes:
Just received the BMNL October 2022.

There appears to be an error in Tip #1 ("how do I protect myself from fraud as
a seller"). It says:

Enable seller protection in your store settings. To do that go to My Store
Settings Management Seller protection. Once you’ve ticked that box, new buyers
(less than 100 days on the site or a feedback score of 5) won’t be able to place
an order with you.

I sure hope it is still just that new buyers are limited to instant check-out,
and NOT barred completely.

Niek.
