for set that corresponds to the correction sheet I recently uploaded?
Attached is an image of my form, but BrickLink rejects these changes with the
message "Entry #1: Item No required if Item Type is Entered". I didn't enter
an item type as that column has been removed. If I enter the item no. in the

Hi
Yes they are factory pre-assembled wheels.
The first ones that came out were glued or pressed together.
Same for the 3464c02 and 4624c01 and 4624c02.
(from 1984-85 till I think begin 90s)
Also same for the first 6015 type with the 6014a.
The rubber is also harder, the assembles are softer in rubber.

Thank you for the wonderful information, Stefaan. I learned something new today!
I am sorry if you ruined many wheel/tire combos due to my lack of information,
Jan.

I didn't. I always await responses from more than one person, especially
in cases like this where I have a strong hunch that I already know the answer
myself but need confirmation.
Should new, preassembled (glued/melted) parts not be added? Along with (or instead
of), maybe a note on the items in question about some versions being difficult
or impossible to disassemble (and notes on timeline)?

No. The preassembled wheels pop right off of the tires just like ones you would
put together yourself.
|
Trying to find a difference, I just disassembled one of the ones that is hard
to disassemble (I needed a pen to pop the wheel out by using force). Testing
against one of my regular 4624 tires, there is an obvious difference: The rubber
is harder (they require more force to squeeze), which explains why it's harder
to disassemble them from the wheels.
Has anyone noticed a difference in material used for the 4624 tires through time?

| I've just sorted out all my spare wheel/tire parts today. Most of the 4624
assemblies (wheel/tire) could easily be disassembled, but I've noticed that
some (10-20% of the ones I found, which amouts to about 50 pieces) are more difficult
(I must use excessive force and a tool, e.g. a pen). A few even seem impossible
to disassemble. Could all these be the factory pre-assembled wheels?
Looking closer through a magnifying glass, some wheels look either deformed/melted
or there's possibly some white glue spilling out. I don't believe they
were glued by a previous owner because I have only seen very few glued parts
in lots I've bought, and there are too many wheels that show this.
So two questions arise:
1) Are the (factory) pre-assembled wheels harder to disassemble than the later
ones that were not pre-assembled?
2) Could any of the pre-assembled parts (e.g. early versions) be glued or melted
together?

I bought the minifigure to confirm and I guess the case is a touch weak since she wasn't sealed. But mine came with 10mm skirt which is consistent with the other Marge and is also consistent with the catalog pic. The same amount of leg is showing. If she had an 8mm skirt, the showing leg would be about 1mm longer than the feet showing, but you can see it is 1mm less instead.

Right now, I only see 10L hoses in the set. Was that a typo?
|
Sorry, I made a mistake. Because the set came with 11L hoses, I expected the
inventory to reflect this, and obviously I didn't see this inconsistence.
| I would at first suggest to change the hoses in the Regular Items section to
be the 11L hoses and then add the 10L hoses and 1L hoses as Counterparts. This
would be identical to how shorter lengths of string are handled in inventories
when they are cut from an original larger length of string. However, since the
1L hoses are technically not needed, we technically don't need to list them
as Counterparts either. In either case, the 11L hoses need to be in the Regular
Items section and the 10L hoses in the Counterparts section. I could go either
way on whether to also keep the 1L hoses as Counterparts or just not have them
listed at all.
Marek, do you have any thoughts on this?

I agree but await Marek's comments before making any inventory request.

| Hi
In set
the hoses are 11L in sealed sets. But the instructions require the builder to
cut 1L off them (see page 39), so that they are 10L. So when selling a used set,
including 10L hoses should be okay. Also, two 1L hoses could be added to make
the set 100% complete. But at this point, the inventory only states 11L hoses
are valid contents of this set.
How should this situation be handled? Should 10L hoses be added as alternates
or counterparts? And should the 1L hoses be added as extras?

The current picture doesn't correspond with the part type. The bar has a hole in the picture (part 48729b). So what's the correct thing to do? Change the inventory, change the picture, or allow both types by adding a note? I have not found evidence that warrant changing the picture or adding a note. In fact, I'm not even sure that part 48729 exists in PLG. Only a few sellers that claim to have it. I have never seen the part in PLG, not even in lots that contain this torso. Noone has been able to supply a photo of it either. But there is evidence of 48729b in this minifig. Unboxing can be found here:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=3198401
I therefore request an inventory change. If this is approved, I think minifig agt016 should be changed also.
|
My minifig also has the newer style clip, so I have a feeling this part does
not exist in PLG in the older style.
Here is what I think happened. The torso above was added to the catalog in 2008,
and the member who supplied the image is the same person who submitted the torso
to the catalog. Therefore, I believe that the image for the torso is the original
image submitted with the torso. The newer style clip was not added to the catalog
until 2010, so this torso entry could not have had the newer style added to it
in 2008. Once the newer style clip was added to the catalog, no one ever went
back and adjusted this minifigure and the corresponding inventories.
I think this change is correct based on all of the evidence I have at my disposal.
Request accepted.
Cheers,
Randy
|
I'm convinced that many sets from that period are not correct about the old
style clip in their inventories. In a large lot of sets I've found only few
parts with old style clips, but to make the sets complete according to BrickLink
inventories, I had to buy a lot of old style clips, because the new clip style
were not valid alternates, and I'm left with many extra new clip style parts
from the lot that I can't use. I believe this is the result of the old part
was never made "undetermined" like I've complained about for other parts
that I know result in wrong inventories but can't document because I don't
have sealed copies or sets that were never mixed with other bricks.
BTW - same issue arises for groove/no groove style cones in set 8630. The set
was in a large lot, but only one metallic silver cone WITH groove was found.
All pictures on Brickshelf show the cone with groove, but they don't show
any sealed bags, so I can't document that they're sealed sets and therefore
probably can't convince anyone to accept a change to change the cone or
allow the grooved variant as alternate. But my guess is that the set never came
with ungrooved variant like it's shown in the product image.

Comments from Submitter:
I bought this set used with these alternates. I've found an unxboxing/build video that confirm them. Included in this set were also part 553c but I can't find any unboxing videos or pictures that clearly show the studs, so I won't change those in the inventory at this point. But if anyone could help, I would be very glad, because I'm convinced this set was never mixed with other bricks. Video screenshots will be posted in forum.

The crocodile consists of 4 parts and doesn't come assembled (at least not
in set 60157 which I just parted out). So isn't the correct way to include
the four parts in the inventories and the complete assembly as a counterpart
for all sets in the above list?
/Jan
|
You are correct. The pieces that come in the set should be included in the inventory
with the complete animal in the counterparts.
|
I'd love to fix this, but your response contradicts what two other admins
say in this thread. I'll let you all agree before I do anything.
/Jan
|
My response doesn't matter if the admins contradict it. But you will see
that Russell didn't exactly contradict me. He said they belong there, but
they just can't go there for the moment.
|
But just because the part-out system doesn't work like some people want to,
I don't see that as a reason not to make the inventories consistent. That
work can already be done now, and I have even offered to do it.

| My question was not related to part-out but about consistency between the inventories.
Isn't that important?
/Jan
| Unfortunately, counterparts don't display on the part-out page. Until that
is changed I think things like this must be left as is.

Are these homemade, or it is possible that LEGO produced these plates from larger

There was another recent discussion about this where it was confirmed that Lego
would produce large baseplates and cut them into smaller baseplates.
|
Does anyone has a link to that discussion?
Did anyone identify which sizes were affected by this? A note should be made
on those parts so that sellers could know this (instead of throwing them away,
I've done that previously) and so that buyers wouldn't think they were
sent unofficial/custom made parts.

BTW - the 16x32 baseplate in this set is also cut.
Based on the answers in this thread, is would be wise to add notes to parts that
are known to be affected by this (is it all types?)

Why would you say it would be rejected? I would be more than happy to look into
this before making any determination.
Could you post a picture of the hoses from this set next to the Bionicle teeth
from this set? I may not be considered one of the resident color experts, but
I do know my LEGO colors quite well. In the meantime, I will search the intertubes
for other data points.

Because the last time I discussed this regarding the color of hoses, we never
came to an agreeement. The admin would rather base the BL inventory on an official
TLG product photo than on actually bricks found in a lot of bricks where the
hoses could only have come from the particular set in question (matching both
length and "twistedness"). One of the last things that were written were "Further,
there is some debate over whether PLG and flat silver are officially different
colors or merely variations in what TLG intended to be the same color." So I
chose to stop the discussion there rather than wasting everybody's time.
Here's a link to the discussion:
https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=234514
Anyway, I have to withdraw my claim in this thread, because I just compared with
Flat Silver hoses in my stock and PLG hoses from set 8637 (I still claim that
these are PLG) and the two hoses from this are definitely Flat Silver, not PLG.
So no change there, please.

Source: MISB-based set that was never mixed with other bricks. My set has link with stoppers. I'm also adding two counterparts, because the instructions instructs the user to cut the hose in two halves (page 63). I'm not sure if this is the correct way to do it on BrickLink, but any used set would most likely never include a 14L hose, but two 7L hoses. As previously discussed for another set, it's my belief that the 2L hoses are PLG, not flat silver. They seem to have the same color as the bionicle teeth which are PLG in this set. most likely have color variation within them. Also, all of these capes come from

any of them being old brown capes. I think it is merely another example of poor
color quality control. Even black capes vary in color density.

Er, now they look aubergine (egg plant / dark purple), not (reddish) brown.

Yeah, that picture wasn't any good. I think my camera get confused by the
wood color of my table.
Here's another pic of the two capes from the 7665 set (left, middle) set
and one from 7965 (right, guaranteed reddish brown). Well, the capes are actually
three shades of brown, the rightmost is the darkest. Now I'm totally confused.

| As previously written, my camera is not able to capture the nuance of the color
in the way I see it.
Anyway, I just realized that I have set which contains a reddish brown
cape. I just compared. There's a definite difference in color. The one from
7965 definitely has a reddish tint, which I still think the other one is missing.
I took a new picture, but the difference is still not as clear as I see it with
my eyes.
So what do you say? Are they still considered to be the same color although they
seem not to be?

| Hello
I recently bought set in used condition. The bricks look like new,
and except for a few missing pieces, the set seems to contain what it should.
Well except maybe the two capes.
The BL inventory says that the capes should be reddish brown but they look more
like (old) brown to me, they lack a "reddish" tint. I that how they should look?
I don't have any any other brown or reddish brown capes or other cloth that
I can compare against. I'm asking because I don't believe this set was
ever mixed with other bricks, and it was delivered mostly assembled to me, so
I suspect that this set was only ever built once and never disassembled before
I did it today.
I don't know if my camera is able to capture the color tones exactly, but
I've tried.

| | I corrected this inventory to resolve this issue similar to examples which you
given in this thread.
You should only move "b" varian from Extras to alternate and then assign new
match ID to extra and the doubled variant in the altarnate section.
So finally situation looks like this you have 48729 in regular part and the same
variant as extra. In alternate section you have doubled 48729b one is matched
witch variant in regular section and one in extra section. This is the best solustion
for now for alternate extras in my opinion.
|
Thanks for fixing this. The inventory now look as I intended to make it look,
although my communication was confusing. The goal was to have 1 extra bar in
the set instead of 2 (different) bars like it was before.

In the example you gave two entries were created in the Alternate Items
section, not in the Counterparts section. Counterparts are defined differently
than extra or alternate parts, but I think I see what you're saying now.
| BTW - This inventory is also a mess regarding this situation. The counterparts
sections reference match IDs that are not defined in neither regulars or extras.

Let me discuss this with Marek and get a written policy in place first, please.

Sorry. My brain hurts after a long day sorting sets. When I was talking about
counterparts, I was really talking about alternates (it's not the first time
I have confused the two). I think my inventory request is still what I want,
it's what happens in step two that is different (chance "counterpart" to
"alternate" in my comment).

Part 48729b (inventory 437138) should not be extra, but a counterpart for the extra 48729 (inventory ID 390008). I know there are problems setting match ID for extras/counterparts (I'm told they are the same as existing, although they're not), so I'm temporarily changing both parts to regular to set Match ID 21 on them. Afterwards, please change inventory ID 390008 to extra and 437138 to counterpart. Thanks.
|
The claw is an extra alternate part, not a counterpart. The counterparts section
should not be used to show alternate parts or extras of alternate parts (although
it may have been in some inventories).
The problem with extra alternate parts, as you can see, is that the inventory
system is not designed to accurately reflect them in an easily-comprehended way.
In reality, this part is legitimately an extra part and either variant may be
included in a set depending on when it was manufactured. Therefore, the inventory
as it stands is not technically inaccurate - just confusing.
Not sure there's any easier way to reflect this reality in the inventory,
although a number of different solutions have been adopted at various times by
various administrators. If you have suggestions, please share them, but I don't
really agree with using the Counterparts section to show extras.
Since you've brought it up, I'll take a hard look at the situation and
attempt to come up with a written policy.

I believe this should have match ID 99 because it came with an additional sheet to replace pages 22 and 23 in book 3 of the instructions. That means that it should be considered a redesign. I'll add a scan of the correction sheet.

| | What does it look like inside? Are there inner walls with round holes through
them as though it were drilled, or is there something else going on?
|
I've taken a picture of what the inside looks like. There are 8 sets of "walls"
that go up against each other - one coming from the top part of the brick, one
coming from the bottom. My guess is that they're glued together. There is
is one set of walls under each stud.
I split one of my old 7049b's today, and it's clear to me that they're
not the same inside. And 3907c has tubes inside, so it's not that either.
Because both top and bottom of my brick look official, my best guess is that
it's a prototype.
I don't know where I got it from, but my best guess it that it was in a box
of 6 kilos of used bricks I bought a couple of months ago. That box had approx.
1000 yellow minifig heads without print (and only a few other minifig parts)
and 72 blue left doors without a single right one, and around 500 maxifig parts
(heads/torsos/arms/hands but almost no hair/hats). So I bet those parts originally
came directly from the factory in Billund, and that white brick could have been
in that mix.
