Pure coincidence... I got some K'NEX and there was some LEGO with it. One
of the pieces was this part with a sticker on it (incorrectly applied from this
set) so I looked it up  .
About setting the match ID to 0 to clear it: is that documented or did I just
miss that? If not, maybe it should...

The match ID should be removed as there is no longer an alternate for this part in the inventory, but I don’t know how to do that, since leaving it blank means “no change”...

Before 2010, the LEGO "silver" color could be lighter or darker depending on
how the color was mixed as well as what plastic formula was used for the part
in question. BrickLink called the lighter version of this color Pearl Light Gray
and the darker version Flat Silver, although they were technically the same color
according to LEGO.
After 2010, LEGO discontinued this "silver" color in favor of a standard color
(Silver Metallic) that is now the same across all parts. This new color is also
cross-referenced to Flat Silver on BrickLink. It is a bit confusing, and it takes
a little to get used to, but you have a good start recognizing the old versus
new colors now.

Thanks for clarifying this. That's pretty confusing indeed. Especially since
the new "SILVER MET." color is not flat but pearly... I think it would have been
better to create a new color called "Pearl Silver" for it.
But then there are more issues with set inventories. There are quite a few post-2010
sets that list "Pearl Light Gray" parts.
For instance:
The axe in my copy has the same dark color as the wrench I just posted images
of, so that means it is actually "Flat Silver". That also agrees with the LEGO
customer page for that set, which lists two axe types, both in "SILVER MET."

We do not use Pearl Light Gray in new inventories. It is a color of the past.
Duplo wrenches are made from a different kind of plastic and they look different
than other parts in Flat Silver. But on BL we classify them as Flat Silver, as
does Lego (i.e. Silver Metallic).

But they are really a different color...
I have 3 wrenches from 3 different sets:
Two are part: Both in a rather dullish looking gray.
I also have part: (came with 10524-1) which definitely looks shinier.
See also the picture I took, I hope you can see it.
LEGO also lists different colors for 47509. PCC 4207545 is listed as "SILVER",
PCC 4620277 is listed as "SILVER MET."
