  Hello everyone,

As a platform, we have decided to take a hard look at some of the mold variants
that we are currently asking you to recognize. For sellers, more variants means
extra sorting and extra work while pulling orders, plus the issues that arise
from variant misunderstandings.

For buyers, excess variants mean that it's harder to assemble a wanted list,
find stores, and ultimately obtain the parts you are looking for.

I have put together a quick Help page to outline these proposed changes:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2625

Notice the date on this is coming up quickly (Feb 1), so I'm not giving a
lot of time for discussion. I'm aiming for about 1 week of discussion and
then we'll give sellers 2 weeks to adjust the descriptions on affected items
if they wish to retain the distinctions.

I plan to construct a full FAQ page with answers to all your questions. This
will serve to inform users about what was done here in February 2024, and also
help point the catalog in the right direction in the future.

To get started, I'll list a few here:

1. This sounds like you're dumbing down the BrickLink catalog to make
it easier for new users. Is that what is going on?

Not really. There are many, many other variants we expect people to sort and
care about. These ones don't really seem to matter much, and some of them
(e.g., the minifigure heads) actually cause problems for the catalog that cannot
be corrected otherwise.

2. What if I really care about a certain variant that is going away? Can I
still buy and sell that variant?

Absolutely! You can add notes to your listings to make them as "determined"
as you wish. Buyers can still search within notes for extra details, or they
can simply observe them as they browse listings.

3. How do I know which exact variants will be merged? I only see one example
in each category.

Please ask in this thread and I can be very specific. Usually we are talking
about a handful of parts and the printed versions.

4. Has a merge like this ever been done before?

Yes, there was a precedent - the Headlight Brick with Slot:

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1016584

It was marked for deletion a few years ago and was finally merged last August.

5. Are these the only parts up for consideration, or are there other variants
that will be merged as well?

This is all for now. Based on how well this goes, we may elect to remove other
entries later. However, we will keep all functional variants and important cosmetic
variants.

Ok, who’s upset the new owner…?? What a tuff start to this years KPI targets.

Recently I am looking for the star wars minifigs that I missed ( around 40) on
bl, the one seller usually have only a have 1-2 that I want, I usually look for
Europe sellers because shipping from us seller starting from 10 usd while Europe
seller from around 4 euro, but recently I try to place a us order for 3 minifigs
and the shipping was around us$20 (term said start from 3us so I give it a try),
yesterday I asked a quote for 4 minifigs cost are hnd 45 euro, the bl automatic
shipping starting from 9 euro, so I asked a seller for a quote for cheapest untracked
shipping, terms said shipping starts from 1.6 euro, but the quote ended up around
11 euro plus 5 euro for charges, this is out of portion, I notice the shipping
inflated after bl calculate shipping automatically.

Does anyone have the same feeling? And any good suggestions? Thanks

Feel the same, most sellers sell postage via parcel post, and not letter mail
for all their orders, given the price increase the last few years for postage,
letter mail is still very cheap to send items that are under 25mm thick from
memory, think BL needs to educate some sellers on this matter because I know
an order from Canada to Australia for $6 worth of parts will cost either $20+
on parcel post or $1.60 for letter mail in a Jiffy bag …..

The entire philosophy behind Bricklink was to provide an opportunity for the
Lego people around the world to acquire what they need in the simplest fashion
possible. The next release needs to go much further in making this process simpler
and easier, not only for the buyer but also the sellers and the 'Bricklink
Experts' that are out there.

Anybody else got any thoughts on this and other features/requirements for the
next release?

It would be nice to have a function or setting in the search screen to allow
for the searching of stores both opened, closed or both (default search would
be for open store only unless selected otherwise...?) As a buyer I find the need
of a misb set not found in the search of opened stores only or bulk parts say
1000's of 1 element type that may not be seen in all of the opened store
but this item or quantity maybe in a closed store and most of the time is. From
selecting this type search you can then make contact with the seller and place
an order....? I can only see this as possibly increasing orders placed and making
Bricklink more competitive to buyers out there...

hmmm, interesting but I can see a few problems.

1. I close my store because I either do not want to or cannot fulfil orders (e.g.
I'm ill, on vacation) so do not want such enquiries in that situation.

2. some members use a closed store just for their own stuff and have no intention
of currently selling it (rightly or wrongly).

3. some closed stores would not want you to see their current prices (or what
they have).. been closed a while, would want to review before opening, etc

I guess that would need some 2nd level of store closure for sellers to set...
I'm closed but I welcome enquiries. I'm not convinced this is good though,
you either want to sell and open or you don't.

Robert

worse still, seller uses it to manipulate the market or invite offers for things
he does not have on hand which is forbidden here.

List new set for attractive price in closed store... get enquiry... I'm closed,
opening in 2 weeks, place order and I send it then (seller goes to buy item).

But the market prices do fluctuate and can be manipulated. An example is you
require 15,000 elements of the same type and colour, you purchase say half of
the several thousand elements of.... P/N 3794 in grey for 0.014 cents each when
the next calendar month comes around and you need the other half of the amount
of the same item you hit the same element again, prices have moved down a few
cents with the major seller who know how to play the game, not much but over
the life of a project enough to make a big difference in savings.

Like you said in around way where here to buy and sell at the end of the day,
I'd add and there are other places to buy and sell be it a bricks and mortar
store or other e-store or lego, it's only that bricklink has made it a did
easier to get quantity and range,

I still think It's a good idea, sometime you don't want to deal with
a seller, or the postage is too high or the sellers terms and conditions are
full of BS, Yes the idea is the diamond in the rough stage, but with a bit of
design cutting and shutting this would be refined maybe to make buyers and sellers
see the pros of this, it would only showing the item is available in a store,
with colours, quantity etc shown as is in the normal store open setting, only
that pricing is not show to "protect sellers ". From there the buyer can initiate
further contact with the seller, if the seller so wishes to further proceed with
a sale and if so be it at delay time or date
