It is quite weird to be expecting white parts and seeing everything look tan.
You would never know these parts were ever white by looking at them since the
color is even on all surfaces of every part. Because the set was sealed, it could
not be UV damage due to sunlight as so many sites claim, so some other chemical
process occurs. There must be some sort of breakdown of some additive in the
ABS due to storage conditions of the set (maybe higher temperatures). I don't
know what it is, but I am less than happy with my purchase now.

Hi there, Giovanni!

Were all three of these sets originally purchased new by you and not mixed with
the contents of other sets?

Thanks,

I can't find instructions anywhere for the actual builds, so they must be
on the CD. Without having appropriate instructions to base changes like this
off of, I do not think I am going to adjust any quantities of parts in this set.
If you can get access to the instructions of the builds, I would like to have
a copy of them.

Hi Randy,

id you check youtube?
The instructions are videos only on the cdrom
Some people share them on Youtube

8483 and 8482 have the same inventory right?

I think the following pdfs are made from print-screens of the video:
https://www.navina.ch/workshop/cybermaster/index.html

-Fred

Thanks for finding those, Fred. Wow, those are going to take quite a bit of time
to go through. I may have to put this one on the back-burner for a bit before
I have the time to study this thoroughly.

Cheers,
Randy

Comments from Submitter:
Please see attached picture in forum. This will bring the set one brick closer to reaching 900, but is still missing one. Consider making identical changes to the set without case.

I found this set with all bags sealed. It's not possible to count the different
pins because the bags are too full to be flattened, but it's possible to
count the items in this small bag, which documents the changes I suggest.

/Jan

Are we sure that all of these parts were counted as Regular Items, or were at
least one of each of them considered an Extra Item? It would be very uncommon
to not see at least one of each of this part as extras.

Cheers,
Randy

254 Parts, 2017
Sets: Holiday & Event: Christmas

* Delete 1 Part 4733 White Brick, Modified 1 x 1 with Studs on 4 Sides (Extra)

Comments from Submitter:
Just opened a new set and did not find an extra piece for this item. This is not a typical extra and is also not listed as an extra in the Rebrickable inventory.

From the Additional Information About Extra Items section of the Inventory
Sections: Regular, Extra, Counterpart, and Alternate
help page:

"Removing or Changing Extra Items - Extra parts can vary depending on
when and where a set was manufactured, meaning that some new sets may include
them and others may not. The quantity of these extra parts can also vary. Extra
parts are typically not removed or reduced in quantity unless it can be determined
that they were originally added or increased in error."

The original inventory was completed from "Sealed Set Contents", so the person
who submitted the original inventory found this as an extra part. It is not a
typical extra part, but it does qualify as an extra part based on the definitions
of what goes in the inventory sections. It is also not the only set on BrickLink
to have this listed as an extra part. Another set from the same year (2017) was
also found with an extra of this part in white.

This request will not be accepted.

Cheers,
Randy

I don't trust any inventories that I haven't confirmed myself from a

Comments from Submitter:
The set comes with these boxes already assembled and individually bagged. But not only that, the inventory has ignored that the boxes are not identical. They are opposites.

And the packaging states the set contains 64 pieces, so the boxes were counted
as one piece each. Nice job. It's about time we had a Clikits expert around
here.

As discussed in the forum, the evidence of this is that I took a pic of the piece that came in my set and unknowingly submitted it to the wrong variant.

I am guessing that one of these should be the *soft* spring, correct? Want to

None of the counterparts with stickers are listed.

The procedure to add stickered Counterparts to BrickLink and set inventories
is as follows:

(1) Add the stickered parts to the BrickLink catalog:

Help on adding items to the BrickLink catalog:
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=71

(2) Add images to the BrickLink catalog for the stickered parts:
https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogImageAdd.page?itemType=P

Help on adding images to the BrickLink catalog:
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=87

(3) Fill out Inventory Change Requests to add the stickered parts to the set
inventories after they are approved by the Catalog Associate.

The following thread may also be of help:

I am referring to that. I will attest the one pictured, a soft spring, was taken
by me from that set. I will await your instructions or you may take care of
it. I will note that if that set did sometimes come with a medium spring, it
is the only dark gray medium spring.

I can't say that it never came with the normal spring as the change logs
for this set seem to suggest it did. Since we know yours came with a soft spring
for sure, go ahead and submit a request to have the soft spring as the regular
item and change the normal spring to an alternate.

I agree. I bought that set hunting undetermined palm trees and it was before
I started hunting undetermined shock absorbers. I just went with what the inventory

Yes, please have the image moved.

Hi Randy,

I found this:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=2508
The first photos are a bit blurry, but 731c06 can be clearly seen on the build
model.

This review at eurobricks also shows 731c06:
https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/30566-review-8448-super-street-sensation/

By the way, it seems that the image for dark gray 731c05 here at BL shows 731c06.

Regards,
Jonas

Thank you, Jonas!

All the sets that I was finding were used sets, but they all showed 731c06. The
images from the series at BrickShelf are indeed blurry, but it is a set being
built from sealed set contents and I can indeed see the 731c06.

Request accepted.

Cheers,
Randy

Hi Randy,

i bought 5 used models from different sources so far and they all had 731c06
installed. This highly indicates that 731c06 is the right part, but its definitely
not a final proof.

PS: I can 1X [p=4073c01] in trans red, but I'm not sure.

I can definitely see the one 4073c01 in Trans-Red. At this point in time, we
can look at the timeline for 4073c01 in the catalog and see that the transition
year was sometime around 1992. Since this set was released before that transition
year, it is very likely that this set always came with 4073c01. I will manually
update the inventory to include them.

* Delete 4 Part 4073 Light Gray Plate, Round 1 x 1 Straight Side
* Delete 1 Part 4073 Light Gray Plate, Round 1 x 1 Straight Side (Extra)
* Add 2 Part 4073c01 Light Gray Plate, Round 1 x 1, 2 on Sprue

Comments from Submitter:
Photo will be uploaded

Only two sprues. The other two extra parts are present. See photos.

This set is actually right during the transition period of these parts being
on sprues to not being on sprues. Since our other current Inventory Admin is
the one who added the extra parts to this set back in 2011, these parts on sprue
will be made the regular parts and the parts not on sprue will be made alternates.

Randy

Comments from Submitter:
The summary is from a friends set. Now we have the 131 parts. Don`t know if I give everything correct. Theses are the changes:
12x 3023 Light Bluish Gray Plate 1 x 2
4x 3023 Dark Bluish Gray Plate 1 x 2
2x 3024 Dark Bluish Gray Plate 1 x 1
6x 3044c Slope 45 2 x 1 Double - with Bottom Stud Holder
18x 54200 Red Slope 30 1 x 1 x 2/3

As I stated in the last thread where you were requesting these changes:

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1135301

"As stated above, I will definitely need to see the instructions of the set and
photos of the part variants before I can proceed with any more changes at this
point. Only then can I be sure of completeness and accuracy."

If this is a friends set, then you should be able to ask your friend to take
photos or make scans of all the instruction steps and part variants for me to
look into this. The images can be sent to inv@bricklink.com

As I also stated in the last thread:

"I think I have come to the conclusion that I will not be making any more changes
to this set unless I have definitive photos and scans of everything involved."

Thanks,
Randy

I have only found photos of two new copies of it. So it is very hard to find
a sealed copy of this set coming with these variation of parts.
Also, most of the trainrims are already perished, so most of those we see in
photos, black or light gray, may be replicas (non-original).
There are four listings on BL of this set, coming blue battery box and blue motor.
I have seen many others (all used):

I personally don't doubt that the blue battery box and blue motor did come
with this set.

Reza -

All right, you have convinced me.

I will keep the blues and grays as the Regular Items since the set probably first
came with those even if we don't know for sure. Eventually, everything changed
to black, so those will be the alternates.

Cheers,
Randy

It's all done. Take a look over it to make sure everything looks OK.

Comments from Submitter:
Are you suore that extra item is 3705b (threaded) and not a 3705 (normal)? In the instruction of the kit neve use the 3705b item

Nope, not sure at all!

This part was added as an extra in 2010. Unfortunately, the Inventory Change
Requests from back then were not saved indefinitely in the forums like they are
today, so we have no information as to why this change was asked for or approved.

I honestly can't see a reason for it being in there.

Our guidelines for Extras in an inventory state:

Removing or Changing Extra Items - Extra parts can vary depending on when
and where a set was manufactured, meaning that some new sets may include them
and others may not. The quantity of these extra parts can also vary. Extra parts
are typically not removed or reduced in quantity unless it can be determined
that they were originally added or increased in error.

So, to make a decision concerning whether to remove this as an extra part, I
have to somehow determine if it was originally added in error. That is going
to be tough to do after nine years removed from the actual change being made.

Any ideas on how you would proceed with this, Paul?

Cheers,
Randy

Part 3705b first appeared as a regular part in sets in 1986 according to our
catalog. So it seems strange that it appeared as an extra part in another set
two years before that. Based on that it seems that a mistake was probably made
when adding this extra.

But wouldn't this set have been produced at least for a few years, possibly
overlapping the introduction of part 3705b?

The only way to be sure would be to ask the person who added it in the first
place. But even they might not remember it after so many years.

I guess we could try that route.

Hi

No... that was also my first thought (my cancelled post) but have a look at the
instructions and all 5 are used as regular axle.

Stefaan

Yeah, I already went over the instructions yesterday. I know it isn't used
in the set in any way, but it may have popped into a random set after a few years
on the market. In any case, I believe it was most likely a LEGO packaging error
if it was found in a set. I am definitely leaning towards removing it from the
inventory.

Cheers,
Randy

I have decided to remove this extra from the inventory. I just can't think
of anything or find anything that makes sense except for it possibly being a
packaging error.

Request approved.

Cheers,
Randy

273 Parts, 2005
Sets: Designer Sets: Traffic

"gear grinders" creator set, 4 red pieces ref 45677 are needed on
the paper instruction (see my photo). And 5 are needed on the Bricklink Inventory.
As it is a creator, with different building options, the exact needed number
is not easy to know. All i know is that 4 of these red pieces are enough to build
each of the suggested buiding options in the instruction. But separately, one
after the other. I don't know if TLG designed this set as being able to build
several "gear grinders" at the same time ? ... Another member owns this set ?
Good sunday to all of you !!

Brickset (= more or less LEGO) agrees with BrickLink to reach 273 pieces in total,
so, unless another part is wrong, it looks correct.

Note that the 5th part was changed to extra on February, 16th 2012, and changed
back to regular on the 19th.
Unfortunately, we can’t see the messages accompanying the changes anymore

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogInvChangeItem.asp?itemType=S&itemNo=4883-1&viewDate=Y&viewStatus=1

Those movment were I think due to parts count on box which shows 273 part. So
current parts count in inventory match.

Sealed set contents that I have found show that the set indeed came with five
of the part, since all three of the main models on the front cover were able
to be made at the same time. Those three models require five of the part. Therefore,
the inventory is correct. However, I will add a note that the instruction manual
has a mistake in the parts list.

Randy

IT is hard to find sealed copies of these old sets. I found out that the light
gray rims were still used in 1969 (at least), the year in which this set and
721-1 were released. See
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1086773

The instructions and the box of this set shows the light gray rims. I also found
some used sets coming with light gray rims AND blue battery wagon/blue motor.
I don't know why the light gray rims were never added to this inventory.
I attach also a photo from toysspread.com

Maybe they were never added to the inventory because the light gray rims never
came in the set? I could not find any images of even used sets with light gray
rims, so I am not convinced. I found one image of a pretty good looking set that
had a blue wagon, but the train rims were still black. Where can I find these
images you are talking about? You are making your assumptions for these changes
on the box, instructions, and images of used sets that are not yours and may
have been changed, so it is not convincing enough to me to add the light gray
rims and blue battery box right away. Maybe the blue wagon, but I am not even
sure of that.

Thoughts, Paul?

Cheers,
Randy

Randy,

I did not request to add the blue battery box or the blue motor, I only requested
to change their match Ids. They are already in the inventory. but the way, the
blue battery box and motor appeared in sets from 1970:
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=bb06&in=S

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=bb45c02&in=S

I understand this, but the original inventory may be wrong. That is why I look
at everything I can find. I want to know if alternates are the right course of
action or if outright replacements of the main parts are needed in the inventory.
So far, I have not personally found an image of one of these sets with a blue
battery box or light gray rims. You said that you had found some. I asked you
where I could find those images. You have yet to answer that question. I do not
trust anything from the ToysPeriod website, because they steal all of their content
from other sources. In other words, I will not trust that the one image from
that site that shows the blue battery box and light gray rims has all of its
original parts. The image may be from a source that used the box images to complete
the set, but all of the actual parts in the set may have never been those pictured
on the box.

When inventory admins receive a request, they want to see evidence to approve
it. Concerning the light gray rims, we have already two sets from 1969 to consider:
1) Should the light-gray rims be removed from 721-1?
2) Should they be added to 103-1?

The first question is the opposite of the second question because the light-gray
rims are already in the inventory of 721-1 but they are not in the inventory
of 103-1.
Were there any evidence that they came with 721-1? (I don't think so)
So everything is based on how the inventory were created in the early days of
Bricklink. The set 721-1 was inventoried to have light-gray rims and then the
black ones were added. But 103-1 was inventoried to have the black ones in 2006
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogInvChangeItem.asp?itemType=S&itemNo=103-1&viewDate=Y&viewStatus=1

by the way, based on the evidence of set 138-1, we know that the light gray rims
were still used back in 1969.
I know it is not easy to make a decision, but I prefer consistency in lack of
evidence
By the way, the first photo I uploaded shows the light gray rims, taken from
the website toysperiod.com

Reza

You should be able to use the change function now. It was fixed a few days ago.

I thought it would not be deployed to the live site until next week. Was it already
pushed to the live site, then?

Randy

Based on your explaination, the parts 3230 and 3229 are undetermined variation.
Currently they appear in the inventory of one set so I am requesting to remove
them and add 3230a and 3229a. By the way, blue 3229b or 3230b do not exist so
no evidence is needed for this request
I guess after, we can mark 3229 and 3230 for deletion?

Thank you, Reza. I had not realized there were 'b' versions in the catalog.
Fred's request to merge the blank entries with the 'a' entries confused
me. The blank entries really need to be marked for deletion instead of merged.

Randy

Hi Randy,

The parts are the same.
I do it wrong to ask a merging?
Then INV of 157-1 will automatically have 3230a and 3229a nope?

-Fred

I guess that depends on which way they are merged, towards the 'a' entries
or towards the blank entries.

Actually, it looks like 3229 and 3230 should be marked for deletion and not merged.

  Hi Paul!
I don't have any source for this suggestion. So you won't approve it.
But it's so frustrating. I order brick with solid pattern, and receive stencil
pattern, invariably. It's so difficult to understand how you can be so sure
that set 310 could not contain the brick with stencil pattern instead of solid
pattern? They are so similar and most sellers on BL don't know the difference.
How can you be sure that those people in the factory in the 1960s who amassed
the parts to put in the set did not sometimes put in the brick with stencil pattern?

What you are failing to understand is that we aren't sure either. We would
be more than happy to add it as an alternate part or change the part in the inventory
completely if we had some convincing evidence to make the change. However, we
don't have that, so the inventory remains unchanged until someone studies
the set enough to figure it out. The inventories are not guaranteed to be 100%
accurate. In fact, at the bottom of every inventory page is a disclaimer which
states:

"BrickLink does not guarantee an inventory to be correct and therefore an inventory
should be only used as a guide."

My life would be more happy if the stencil pattern would be listed as alternate
part. If it's listed as alternate who would be hurt by this?

Vintage collectors who would think that it is OK to have that alternate part
in the set when it may have never come in the set. As soon as BrickLink lists
something as an alternate in a set, then everyone using that inventory will think
that the set came with that part at some time. However, what if that set *never*
came with that part? Then by adding the alternate, you have made the inventory
*less* accurate. This is why we require convincing evidence to change the inventories.
We are not going to just add and remove parts on a whim and decrease overall
inventory accuracy.

  These inventory
lists on BL determine so much here on BL, and I would hope that BL administrators
could consider the possibility.

We do. If you have convincing evidence, we will be more than happy to look into
the situation. If you don't, then we won't.

And this is also the case for other parts, for
example 1x4 brick car grilles, where the sellers here on BL do the same thing.
They send surface print when I order embossed print, and when I order embossed
print, they send surface print.
I'm getting so tired of this. Lego is supposed to be fun. Why can't the
administrators on BL list more alternates in the inventory lists? For example
if a brick is listed as surface print, cannot the embossed print always be listed
as alternate, and vice versa?

You are getting the BrickLink catalog and inventory admin roles confused with
the roles of the sellers you are buying from.

The functions of the BrickLink catalog and inventory admins are to maintain the
BrickLink catalog and inventories to the best of our abilities using what knowledge
we have and what knowledge we can obtain. We all take our roles seriously, and
we do not make changes to things without studying them and making informed decisions.
We try to make things as accurate as possible when it comes to the BrickLink
catalog and inventories. Adding alternates willy-nilly is *not* how the system
works.

What you are complaining about is the inability of your sellers to list things
under the appropriate catalog entries. That is not the fault of the BrickLink
volunteer admins. That is the fault of the sellers, and you need to take your
complaints up with those you purchase from for sending items that do not match
what you ordered. Also, if you are concerned about receiving specific variants
of certain parts that are not distinguished in the BrickLink catalog, the onus
is on you to send a note to the sellers ahead of time asking if they have the
version you seek or not. I do this when I make purchases here, and I am sure
that many others do, also.

Cheers,
Randy

  Thanks for your answer!

No problem! I am happy to help a fellow BrickLinker understand the ins and outs
of how things work around here.

I'm a buyer on BL, so when I look at the inventory list for, for example
set 335-2, I see 1 entry for 445 yellow door 1x3x4 Left. So this is an "undetermined"
entry and encompasses door 445a? How am I supposed to know this?

This is how part variations have always been handled on BrickLink. Each standard
part entry is basically a placeholder for all variations of that part that have
ever been made. Until someone finds it important enough to split a part entry
into specific versions for specific variants of a part, the original entry remains
a "catch-all" entry. So for example, in this case, someone noticed that the original
entry for 445 contained two different variants of the part. They found it important
enough to add the thin-handled version to the catalog as a specific variant.
What they should have done at the same time was add the thick-handled version,
also, but they did not. As a result, the original entry for 445 needs to remain
to cover the thick-handled version of the part. When a thick-handled version
gets added to the catalog as 445b, then the process can be moved along to get
the part entry for 445 removed.

I hesitate to submit "catalog entries for the thick-handled versions of the doors",
as you suggest. This will have commercial repercussions and some people who have
painstakingly amassed the set with original parts for sale on BL suddenly have
to find the type of door which you decide to list as the correct entry, if they
have the other type of door in their set for sale. I don't understand why
this problem cannot be solved by listing both type of doors in all the sets with
these types of doors, one type as alternative.

You have no need to worry. Like I stated above, this is the way things have always
been handled on BrickLink. The set inventories are not guaranteed to be 100%
correct, but the inventories do get more correct and more specific over time
as people contribute to growing the body of knowledge of the history of LEGO.

What is nice about splitting entries into specific variants over time as they
are found is that those who want a set from a certain era to contain the correct
vintage parts have a chance to get the correct parts. For example, in the one
set where we added the thin-handled doors, I am pretty certain that the thick-handled
versions of the doors never appeared in that set. Is it OK for the inventory
to show that the thick-handled versions of the door could have been in the set
when they actually never were? I personally don't think so. I think the inventory
for this set, as well as all of the other inventories containing these doors
should show the correct vintage parts. The only way to accomplish that is to
get specific entries for both variants into the catalog and then let users over
time make the necessary changes to the inventories (with proof) to get them corrected.
This process takes time, but it could be sped up if someone were to get the thick-handled
versions of the doors added to the catalog as separate entries.

Could I also ask here for my other message on suggestions, about part 3009p01.
Is this part also an undetermined entry and encompasses 3009p01e? Because I have
ordered 3009p01 from 6 sellers on BL, and they have all sent me 3009p01e. And
part 3009p01e is not listed in any inventory.

I have not looked into this one. If it was posted as a Suggestion, also, then
I didn't see it.

For me as a buyer on BL it is difficult to understand that all these doors with
thin handle and part 3009p01, and other parts as well, are so plentiful on the
market here on BL, but do not appear in any set (except 341).

Like I stated in the last message, the thin-handled versions were only added
as separate entries a little over a year ago. Therefore, the majority of the
doors listed on BrickLink would still be listed under the original entries. Because
of that, you can get any versions of the doors when you order using those original
entries.

The reason that the thin-handled versions are not in more inventories is because
the research has not been done since they were added to the catalog to determine
what inventories they should be placed in besides the one where they have been.
It takes a lot of time and patience to study these old sets, so changes to the
inventories are very slow to happen and require convincing proof. We don't
just add alternates and variants to sets unless those variants were actually
known with a large amount of confidence to have actually come in a set. You have
to remember that the catalog and inventory admins are just volunteers who do
not have unlimited time to study every inventory for complete accuracy and rely
a lot on the knowledge and help of others. Unfortunately, there are not enough
people out there with knowledge of these old sets to get things changed quickly.

Cheers,
Randy

I would say it does belong in the Regular Items section. I will move it.

Hi Randy!
Did you read my message in Suggestions posted on April 21?

I did now.

  There's something
wrong if BL is overflowing with all these utility doors with thin handle, but
those doors only appear in the inventory of one set (341-1).

Firstly, the doors with thin handle were only added to the BrickLink catalog
about one year ago. Therefore, until that point, there were only the original
entries for both versions of the doors (basically "undetermined" entries) as
they had not been separately recognized yet. Sellers could, in effect, only list
both versions of the doors under the original entries that were available.

Secondly, the doors with thick handle have not been added separately to the catalog
yet, so the original door entries are still "undetermined" entries and can contain
both versions of the doors. Sellers that have realized there are thin-handled
entries for the doors can choose to list their doors using those entries, but
they don't have to at this point because the original entries have not yet
been marked for deletion. Since the original entries have not been marked for
deletion, all of the relevant inventories that contain these entries are still
basically correct.

Thirdly, the reason the thin-handled doors only appear in one inventory is because
I researched that one set when you made a past Inventory Change Request and found
convincing evidence that the thin-handled doors had appeared in that set. I would
not have made the change without finding convincing proof, and I would not have
just referred to the box images or instructions for such a decision. At this
point, I do not have the time to go and research all of the other sets that you
are asking to make changes to.

Why does nobody answer my suggestion posted on April 21?

The "Suggestions" topic is for posting things that you believe the BrickLink
development team should look into. It is not for posting things that deal with
the BrickLink catalog and BrickLink inventories. There are separate topics for
those that are monitored by the volunteer catalog and inventories administrators.

If you look at the boxes
of all the sets I have made inv. change requests to, plus the instructions, I
think it's pretty clear that you see doors with thin handle. Don't you?

We do not make changes to inventories based on just set images or set instructions.

For set 088-1 one could look at the big leaflet accompanying the set, there you
see doors with thin handle.

I only suggest the doors with thin handle as an alternate, so there should be
no commercial repercussions for sellers or buyers having amassed the parts for
these sets and looking for doors with open handle.

As stated above, sellers are free to list both versions of the doors under the
current entries because they are "undetermined" entries and do not represent
a specific variant of the part. If sellers want to use the thin-handled door
entries to list that specific version, then they are free to do so at this time,
but they are not currently required to. Once thick-handled entries have been
added to the BrickLink catalog and the original entries have been marked for
deletion, then sellers will be forced to choose which variant they need to list
under. Maybe you would be so inclined to submit catalog entries for the thick-handled
versions of the doors to get the process moving along more quickly?

So my source is instructions and box covers for all the other sets, and the leaflet
for set 088.
Yours truly
Johan

If you do not have any proof besides instructions and box covers for all of these
sets, then I cannot accept any of them at this time. As stated before, since
all of the inventories currently contain "undetermined" entries, all of the inventories
are basically correct.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Cheers,
Randy
