Currently if an order is placed with instant checkout, the order goes into an
in progress state while Bricklink waits for some confirmation of payment from
Paypal. The order stays in that state for 10 minutes according to some other
posts in the forum.

I would like the API to be able to access these orders and the stock that is
tied up on them.

The reason is so that I can get an accurate picture of my inventory even if I
have in progress orders.

After all while the in progress order is there, I still have this inventory on
the shelf, but I don't have an order that it belongs to.

The absence of this feature is the only reason stopping me from turning instant
checkout on.

+1

I will add that, to avoid race conditions, it would be best if these "checkout
in progress" orders could be listed within the results of the existing /orders
API call (with an appropriate new status code). In order to preserve backward
compatibility of the API call, this new behavior could be requested by specifying
an extra parameter, like inprogress=Y.

I wanted to reply to the thread of the same subject, but it was locked by BrickLink,
so here's a follow up.

Quote from QA_Sheryl:
We would love to hear some constructive feedback about what you do not like about
the new My BL page. Without specific complaints we aren't able to make the
new page advantageous to users that don't currently like it. Please feel
free to contact the help desk with any suggestions for improvements.

The original post was right on the point: there is nothing to fix. The "old"
My BrickLink page is quite fine the way it is.

Seriously, there is nothing to fix there, please don't fix what isn't
broken.

The old page is highly practical: we can _immediately_ see everything we need
to know, and obviously without having to scroll anywhere. And on the same page,
without having to scroll, there's this very useful table of all links to
all of BrickLink. What else could one ask for? It's perfect.

The only thing that's broken with the "old" My BrickLink page is the huge
banner on top the messes up both the horizontal and vertical spacing. That could
be fixed.

Hey folks!

Buyers can't see their cart weight unless they enable some obscure option.
Why is that option even not enabled by default? Why can't I, as a seller,
force buyers to see their cart weight in my store?

This means that if buyers aren't aware that this option exists, they have
to guess the weight, ask the seller continuously as they add batches, or request
a bunch of quotes.

Why force this upon ourselves when the website can automatically do it for us?

I suggest we allow sellers to show cart weights to their buyers, even if the
buyers haven't enabled that option.

Thanks for voting!

If it doesn't allow dimensions per tier then it will fail in the UK, Large
letters/small parcels and medium parcels all have their own min/max dimensions
as well as weights and without the ability to define that no system can work
out the correct shipping costs - it can only guess and that is not what is wanted.

It looks like you are implying we are going to have to charge paypal fees - which
is not likely - they have to come up with a better way of dealing with this little
issue. Suggestions have been to no longer allow multiple batches (which I do
not believe will go down well).

If all this works so wonderfully well at BO why is it that all the stores who
wanted auto-checkout haven't moved there? Bricklink is still the premier
site for Lego and we are sure they will try and stay that way, but that won't
be done by introducing illogical operating procedures.

If it all were just a numbers game life would be far easier than it is - but
unfortunately it isn't. Yes we can tell the weight of an order (approximate)
but at present we cannot tell in any way what style parcel it is going to go
into. That has to be solved first. And perhaps one of the first steps is getting
the catalogue database updated to reflect the requirements. e.g. Height, weight
etc etc.

Automated shipping methods are optional on BrickOwl, you can rely in the old
good "Request a quote" if you do desire. But most customers clearly prefer seeing
the shipping rates, being able to max out their order value without hidden surprises,
and pay right away.

One of the first advice given to new sellers over there is "Set up your shipping
methods!", because it roughly doubles the sales.

I would say that's incredibly important, but before we can even get to that
point we must discuss the fact that both BL and BO catalogs are owned by for-profit
companies. Both companies have the power to completely erase every bit of work
done or sell to another company which could erase or radically alter the work
done by volunteers.

Well, you can't erase data released under an Open Database License (and many
of us have the whole BrickOwl database on disk). Technically, it is true that
the copyright owner could change the license at any moment. But if that were
to happen, past releases would still be available under the Open Database License,
for anyone to use and improve.

Would they? I don't know, but before a catalog can have any real value it
must be divorced from this kind of power. That's why I believe a good reference
catalog must be non-profit and community-owned.

The BrickOwl catalog's license allows anyone to make a copy, declare it non-profit
and community-owned. No one has the power to prevent that, even if they were
to change the license.

In fact, if I'm not mistaken, BrickLink didn't have a legal case to prevent
others from using a snapshot from its database *before* they changed the Terms
of Use. No one was interested to go to court to find out, though.

And then there is the situation with Brick Owl's crippled catalog. The negative
PR on the intellectual property issue has fueled a grassroots effort to rebuild
their catalog, and phenomenal progress has been made. Makes me wonder if StormChaser
has joined the Brick Owl ranks.

I believe that a truly worthwhile LEGO research site/reference catalog would
be significantly separated from the demands of commerce and be freely open to
anyone wishing to use it. In the absence of such a catalog, I remain loyal to
the world's most comprehensive existing LEGO reference catalog, which is
BrickLink.

Many things have changed since these posts were made 27 months ago.

BrickLink's catalog is still a lot more complete regarding old sets and parts,
for sure. It would make a great master catalog, except that it's terms of
use actually prohibit its use by others.

On the other hand, BrickOwl's catalog is more complete regarding the dimensions
of all recent parts, since it's essential for the automated shipping calculator.
And it's available to all under an Open Database License.

Would it be better if an open catalog would be fully independent from an actual
marketplace? Perhaps... but what matters most is that a master catalog must be
available for everyone without any restriction on its uses.

Ah! If store tabs could be visible on high resolution screens, that would already
be a good starting point.

By the way, modern websites detect the resolution one is running to display appropriate
images. No bandwidth is wasted.

Suggestion: only moderators can change the subject line.

The past couple of weeks I noticed that some posters in the forum frequently
change the subject line. This is not a good thing. For instance:
The original post was: "Does this qualify for an NSS". But then somebody changed
it to "Seller does not respond".
This is very confusing for anybody and especially for new users.

Agreed, it's harder to keep track of replies even if you know how the system
works.

Interesting, thank you. so, for a set, for example, there is no differential
for a used complete set, and a used partial set? If that is true, their price
guide is more broken than BLs guide. Anyway, I stand behind the age-old belief
that linking to the price guide could be bad, in the long run. I'm not gonna
ask for proof otherwise, as obviously, both opinions are just that, opinions
.

If I'm not mistaken, any sale of a set tagged as "incomplete" does not affect
the BO price history.

My personal opinion is that seeing the sale prices of incomplete sets is worthless
anyway (unless you can see what was missing).

As long as you can't back up this claim with reliable numbers I disagree.
Misuse of superlots is more noticeable, though, but I claim that the majority
of superlots are honest. They are less visible as they are in the normal range
of the PG and not on the low end with one item.

Just personal experience: I encounter superlot abuse very regularly, and I haven't
yet casually encountered a honest use of a superlot when browsing normally.

Like I said:

The abuse permanently distorts the price guide history, and that's a serious
problem.

We need a way to filter these out, abuse or not.

Doesn't that risk losing the buyer's entire cart of items if you become
out of stock on an item in the quote before it's committed as an order?

I don't use the quote system, which is flawed as you mentioned.

I'm saying that customers can submit real orders and later request cancellations
if they don't like the shipping rate. It's easier for everybody involved.

Some sellers do not allow buyers to back out of a purchase if they change their

Right now, this option is left to each store to describe in their store terms
if they allow it (or not). Usually, it is never mentioned at all, which can cause
some confusion among new buyers.

That would be a viable temporary measure, it may a while before BrickLink actually
implements automated checkout (are they done with the MOC Shop, Chinese translations,
and so on?).

Instead, I have had to put this in my store banner:
"Feel free to place an order to get a shipping quote. You can cancel any order,

I'm guessing it's an option on Brickstock? I don't use Brickstock
all that much, I tried importing my inventory and I am getting a ton of errors
"item and/or item type are invalid" :(;

Update the BrickStock database.

Besides possible new parts, someone recently decided it was a good idea change
the BrickLink IDs of 3800 parts.

I want to suggest that you can only favorite a store by having placed an order
at that store. This way you can at least tell if buyers least-favorited you.

Thoughts?

How is that a weapon?... It's just a tool for buyers to quickly mark/flag
sellers, it beats having to track everything down with a notepad.

That would be someone like me, as I openly stated that I wish more of my favorite

BrickLink could fix their archaic platform, or more sellers could extend their

an "agenda", which is to buy LEGO parts on a functional web-based platform. Scary
stuff.

I think that this is an unfair characterization of what happened.

Sure, complaining about the appearance of the changes made can seem petty.

But complaining about an update that was so poorly tested that it made it impossible
for some people TO PLACE ORDERS? That seems fair to me.

For QCBricks, perhaps BrickLink is such a modern wonder, so perfect that it is
above any criticism?

Come on!... It seems hard not to criticize BrickLink when they hardly ever perform
any update, and when they try to do so, they screw up the most elementary testing
to implement features no one had asked for (do we really need a prominent Chinese
translation for the 0.3% of BrickLink users from China?).

At least the feedback percentage is mostly right, though it would be preferable
to give more weight to recent orders.
