Based on this request:

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1015490

I am moving 5 parts from the extra section to the regular. These parts are used
in alternate models as pictured on the box and they also round out the piece
count for the set, from 774 to 779 (official, as printed on boxes for the US
market).

The string and winch would have come assembled.

Interesting situation with the minifig heads. In sets with the early "stiff"
minifigs the head and torso were counted as separate pieces. This can be easily
seen from using the "Break Minifigs" feature in this inventory:

Set No: 770 Name: Rescue Set
*
770-1 (Inv) Rescue Set
121 Parts, 3 Minifigures, 1976
Sets: LEGOLAND: Hospital
which will yield a total of 133, same as printed on the box.

And it is common knowledge that up until recent times, the head and torso were
counted as one piece and actually came assembled in new sets. I've always
assumed Lego made the switch in piece counting policy when the movable minifig
was introduced in 1978, but the castle set is evidence that perhaps the counting
policy (and maybe even the assembly policy) took a year or so to fall in place.
It would be interesting to hear from some folks who remember opening a set with
a minifig in 1978, if they could remember how it came assembled.

My first (and favorite) minifig was this guy:

Minifig No: shell001a Name: Shell - Classic - Blue Legs, Red Hat (Torso with Trapezoid Sticker)
*
shell001a (Inv) Shell - Classic - Blue Legs, Red Hat (Torso with Trapezoid Sticker)
Minifigures: Town: Classic Town: Gas Station
from the tanker set, but I'm pretty sure I didn't get him in 1978. I
don't remember any fig growing up that came with the head separated from
the torso. It always seemed a little odd to take off the head to put air tanks
on the space figures.

Anyhow, even if the heads are counted with the torso, if the 2 blue slopes were
added we would still need 12 more pieces - sort of a stretch, but who knows.
Either way, the 5 pieces I'm adding now would be needed to meet the total.

  All of the other requests were approved. For this part, I'm confused on
the role the rail with connector wire played and why it was later included as
an alternate.

Can you explain that in more detail, please? Does it have to do with the alternate
motor? Would the inclusion of a rail with a connection wire have changed the
type or quantity of connection wires which already exist in the inventory?

It does not have anything to do with the motors (alternate, regular, substitute,
extra or any type of motor).

I use a message that Morris wrote me (since his return in January, we put our
knowledge together and therefore, you are seeing many inventory change requests).
This is something important, and there will be many inventory change request
relating to this. So please do your best
I should say that the whole story is not very easy. It took me many months to
understand the whole evolution.

In 1980 the sets 7730 and 7740 were released coming with both curved and straight
conducting curved. In 1981 the set 7725 was released coming with ONLY curved
conducting rail. (TLG tried to release a nice train with three cars but using
less parts than 7730 or 7740. The result was 7725)
However there were interference problems, caused by the track, to radio or TV
reception, so the Lego Group introduced the special suppressor rail 3241c, which
was necessarily curved because it had to be included in 7725 (no straight rail
included in it). We believe that this happened in 1982. This part was also included
in 7730 and 7740 since 1982.
Please note that 3241c was always accompanied by the leaflet 117983, but unfortunately
this paper is not dated.
And also in the MIB 7740 provided by Bluxe (motor date 22 81) apparently there
is no 3241c. In my perfect boxed 7725 (in the same lot as those space sets) whose
motor is dated 29 81 there is no 3241c. So this is why we think it was released
in 1982.
This part was also included in 7735 and 7745 in 1985 as you see in the photos
of this sealed 7745. But in 1986, TLG decided to integrate 3241c and a wire that
had to be used to connect the conducting rails to the transformer (without wire,
the trains won't move )
The result, I believe, was

Part No: 2731b Name: Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Long Connector
*
2731b Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Long Connector
Parts: Train, Track
I have good evidence for this, otherwise, this part is not included in any set
on bricklink. In 1988, this part was replaced by

Part No: 2731a Name: Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Short Connector
*
2731a Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Short Connector
Parts: Train, Track
And this is another case for which the inventory does not have enough features.
I don't know what we can do with this. This is the summary of what I would
like to see one day for the inventory of 7745 and 7735:
1985:

Part No: 117983a Name: Paper Information Note, Special Suppressor Rail - 117983
*
117983a Paper Information Note, Special Suppressor Rail - 117983
Parts: Paper

Part No: 3241c Name: Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved, interference-free
*
3241c Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved, interference-free
Parts: Train, Track

1986-7:

Part No: 117983b Name: Paper Information Note, Special Suppressor Rail with Wire and Connector - 117983
*
117983b Paper Information Note, Special Suppressor Rail with Wire and Connector - 117983
Parts: Paper

Part No: 2731b Name: Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Long Connector
*
2731b Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Long Connector
Parts: Train, Track

1988-90:

Part No: 117983b Name: Paper Information Note, Special Suppressor Rail with Wire and Connector - 117983
*
117983b Paper Information Note, Special Suppressor Rail with Wire and Connector - 117983
Parts: Paper

Part No: 2731a Name: Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Short Connector
*
2731a Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Short Connector
Parts: Train, Track

How can we show this on inventory?

No, I've sent a message to that member about the replies from the IA's
