Introduced =/= exclusive. Old molds can be run alongside new ones for various
amounts of time. Old parts can be in inventory for years as they bleed the stock
down, and until the stock hits a low threshold they might not order up a new
run of parts using the newer mold in that color. I shouldn't own one of
these in dark-bley...but I do:

Part No: 4085b Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with U Clip Thin (Vertical Grip)
*
4085b Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with U Clip Thin (Vertical Grip)
Parts: Plate, Modified

I know, but I refuse this kind of reasoning. Because it does not explain, why
set A is affected, but not set B. These parts were quite common and exist in
not too many colours. So, if old stock ever existed, please explain why it should
have been used only for certain sets, and not for all?

You simply cannot explain everything that happens with Lego. Experienced collectors
know this. There is the barrel theory, that Lego just gets to the bottom of the
barrel every once in a while, and then a bunch of old variants show up in sets.
Or there is plenty of evidence that Lego purposefully placed certain variants
in certain sets for various reasons. There are different packaging plants, there
is Samsonite, there is the Brazilian market, etc. etc. Some of this could be
explained in detail if you happen to meet a former employee of Lego. But much
of it is just conjecture, pure and simple.

Back in those days, I got lots of sets, and the hollow studded hinge plates where
contained quite everywhere, while the older version never appeared in any set
after 1987.

We're not disagreeing about the likelihood of a variant being found in a
given set. We're disagreeing about how the BrickLink inventories should function.
BrickLink inventories represent, as well as possible, what has actually been
found in reliable sources, not what should be found, or what is commonly found,
or what might eventually be found.

As such, the inventory system will never be complete with variants. That is not
the goal. The goal is to provide reliable data points so that users themselves
can piece together what could come in a set.

It doesn't bother me a bit that one train set has the later variant, and
another train set doesn't. All that means is that someone found it in one
set, and no one has found it (yet) in another. Users can put 2 + 2 together and
decide for themselves how reliable a given variant is, based on who submitted
it, what other sets it has been found in, and their own personal experience with
real sets.

But of course, this is not an hard proof, just some knowledge from an unimportant
collector...

The BrickLink system was built by collectors - there is no such thing as an unimportant
collector.

Now I see why many people stopped contributing to BL catalog.

It's an undeniable fact that people do stop contributing to the catalog.
Look at the logs and you will see many people from the early 2000's who haven't
done anything in years. As to WHY they stop, it's anyone's guess.

Fortunately, new people come along regularly to contribute, and we always get
a few who come back. So we're doing quite well actually when it comes to
contributors. We could always use more, but there is plenty of activity these
days, and we're grateful for it.

Seeing all the photos which have recently surfaced of sealed train sets, I find
it difficult to understand why it would be difficult to locate some hard proof
for any change request for these sets. Some sets are practically impossible
to locate in brand new condition, or even used condition, but this does not appear
to be the case for 1980s train sets.

But SezaR is right.

It is common knowledge that the hinges with hollow studs were introduced around
1987.
It is also common knowledge that the set 7735 was produced from 1until 1990.
(same as 7745, 7824 and some town/space sets that also were produced both before
and after the change).

So of course, the hinges with hollow studs must be alternate parts for all these
sets.
Some inventories already show this, it ist just logical to correct all affected
sets.

* Change 2 Part Black 4275a Hinge Plate 1 x 2 with 3 Fingers and Solid Studs {match ID 0 to 2}

Comments from Submitter:
This set was released until the end of 1990. So, similarly to the set 7745, these hinges were replaced with their new variants.

We are not going to approve requests to blanket the inventory system with every
possible variant. If you want to add a variant to an inventory, you need to a
have a reliable source.

Even if you had a track record of being right with every request, we would still
reject these requests based on principal. But you have been sorely wrong in your
conclusions several times recently, and these wrong submissions amount in the
end to a lot of wasted time and effort on the part of our administrative staff.

I'm sorry if this seems harsh, but one of our main jobs with the BrickLink
catalog is to preserve it. There have been times in the past that people have
gotten away with these kinds of requests, but in the end somebody has to go through
(sometimes years later) and weed out all the unsubstantiated additions to try
to get a clear picture of what the sets really contained.

Russell

You are not too hard. Getting inventories correct is a very hard job. You might
look at Perron.
I did a lot of stuff for that catalog. I often would use two or more sets to
compare inventories.
Part of the problem with over jealous submissions is that Lego world substitute
parts they did not have on hand. They might have used a different part for just
a few sets or for hundreds. Lego creatived problems for those that try to have
a acruate list. It is literally impossible. You would be busy for ever going
back and forth. There can also be variants of the instructions.

Yes, there are a few reasons why these requests have not been approved:

1. The inventory you've recently submitted for the part you want
to add includes exactly the same parts which you want to delete from the inventory.
Therefore, adding the complete assembly will not be any more correct than including
the individual parts (unless the parts came assembled in new sets).

2. I don't know if these parts came assembled in new sets or not
and you've not addressed the issue. If the parts came assembled, then it
would be correct to add the complete assemblies for both the red and blue connectors
with wires.

3. Approving these changes would eliminate the match to the different
type of connector which also came in this set. This is not desirable. The entirety
of the connectors and wires in this set, both regular and alternate parts, should
be changed at the same time if they need to be changed.

4. The wires in this set should be measured. As far as I'm concerned,
this is an undetermined entry which will one day be deleted from the catalog:

Part No: x466 Name: Electric, Wire 12V / 4.5V with two Leads, unspecified length
*
x466 Electric, Wire 12V / 4.5V with two Leads, unspecified length
Parts: Electric, Wire & Connector

Fair point. I should have said "community interest". I don't fault BrickLink
for wanting to make money--that's why most all of us (sellers, at least)
are here too. But BL is creating an environment that is hostile to the hobby
seller, the new seller, and even most small-to-mid-range sellers. Ultimately
it seems like that would be counterproductive for them but they must think it
is beneficial to them in some way, but I can't see how.

On a slightly different note, I'm no economist, but I thought it was pretty-well
established that economies don't like instability and uncertainty. Continually
introducing unsolicited, ill-conceived, poorly-implemented features does not
create a stable environment that is conducive to growth nor does it instill confidence
in your users. The lack of confidence is only compounded by BrickLink's
continued silence on this latest debacle.

I understand wanting to take some time to craft a carefully-worded statement
(since it will be picked apart in the forum), but how hard is it to simply say,
"we've heard you, give us a little bit, and we'll have a statement for
you"?

They wouldn't get that response if they cared to develop even a basic understanding
of the BrickLink community (both buying and selling) and the AFOL community in
general. I can forgive a lot of incompetence if you're at least working
in my interest.

I'd be happy if they could even just pretend to care. But instead we get
silence (which allows rumors and bad info to spread) and when do get a response
they are often times snarky or condescending.

A little while ago when Jaclyn's predecessor was here I got a lifetime ban
from the forum for something similar to this. Fortunately she got the 'move
on out order (P45 in the UK) and Jaclyn re-instated me with full apologies.

Good luck with it.

We know that since 1983 (or earlier?), the sleeprs 767 were replaced by 4166
with cable grooves as the cable grooves were needed for the set 7866.

Ths set 7710 was released since 1980 until the end of 1984. Please see photos
of a sealed set (photos are provided by: lego.12vtrains)

The photos I have of this set don't show any extra hose, however the extra
parts vary from one copy of a set to the other one.
But I guess admin would ask you to submit photos of your set/box for future reference.

Hi i have had this set new for release and have always kept the spares or extra

I am now going through all my sets and boxes while checking them against your
inventory and confirming and adding where yours are missing. I am very confident
in this addition as the other extra parts are the same and have checked the trian
in case I missed a nosel, but all is acounted for except this extra nosel. I
have been a collector since 1979 and have always prized my boxes and extra pieces
without mixing them up. If i had any doudts i wouls not have submitted any change.

We know that since 1983 (or earlier?), the sleeprs 767 were replaced by 4166
with cable grooves as the cable grooves were needed for the set 7866.

This set 7856 was released until 1990.

Since 1981, the 2-prong cables were replaced with 3-prong cable holes.
The motor is then of type 3 in latest version.
I have also requested to add the second type of blue battery wagon x488c01 having
3-ping cable holes. (after 2 weeks, not yet approved)
See photos, specially the 4th photo.
The last photo is for comparison of the two type 4.5v motors.

We expect all sets that were released after 1983 came with sleepers 4166: including
7710.

It is interesting to compare your photo of the parts bag with the photo which
was originally used to request the addition of the single extra as seen in this
message:

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1072545

So interesting, in fact, that I have attached both photos for the sake of easy
comparison. I am rather surprised to find that the parts were packaged so differently
(and more than a little suspicious that one of these sealed bags may not be direct
from LEGO, although I don't know which).

In my sealed box the extra rims are not even in the poly bags, but they are loose
in the sealed box.

Cant find this in the part list but is used for the set, and has the number 241226 in the catalogue part list. It is used on the back of the Proton pack for each mini figure.

You can find those parts in the inventories of the minifigures in this set.
In the future, you may click the Break Minifigs link at the top of the
inventory page to have the minifigure parts show up with all the other parts.

I have in my possession elements that make up this set, and the part in question is not PDG, but because of the rough effect of the arms of the grabber, it makes it look like PDG, but the colour is actually DBG
The Peeron site classifies this part being Dark Stone, which is indeed DBG, hence this change request

There's no image for this part in that color. Hows about you add one?

Comments from Submitter:
This extra part is IMHO not included. Maybe please someone checkt that. Maybe my set is missing this part?

This request was not approved. I understand that the Extra Items section of
inventories is confusing to people, so I've taken the liberty of composing
a FAQ for these parts. These are my views and may not represent the official
position of BrickLink.

What are extra parts?

Sometimes parts are included in sets and other items which are not shown to be
used in the instructions for the model or alternate models, are not shown in
the parts list in the back of the instructions, and are not shown in official
photos of the model or alternate models. These parts are considered extras and
there is a special section in the inventory for them.

What parts are typically included as extras?

There are certain parts which are commonly included as extras. Here is one:

Part No: 4073 Name: Plate, Round 1 x 1
*
4073 Plate, Round 1 x 1
Parts: Plate, Round

If your set includes any of part 4073, it is very likely to include an extra
one. However, this is not guaranteed. The parts which are included as extras
can vary depending on when and where an item such as a set was manufactured.

Sometimes unusual parts are included as extras, such as this part which is only
included in a small number of sets as an extra:

Part No: 4282 Name: Plate 2 x 16
*
4282 Plate 2 x 16
Parts: Plate

Even in the sets in which it appears as an extra part, not all copies of the
set include an extra plate.

My set didn't include a certain extra part, so it should be removed from
the inventory.

Parts in the Extra Items section of an inventory are variable, meaning that some
sets may include them and others may not. These parts, unless obviously incorrect,
are typically not removed from inventories. This is because their presence
in the inventory means that someone opened a new set and found that extra part
and, it stands to reason, someone may do so again in the future.

This will not affect any inventory change request that has been submitted and
approved. The content of the bags are correct anyway, as I have photos of another
MISB set, confirming the recent inventory change requests (extra parts and trainrims).
The trans-clear sprue is also in this so-called loose bag. I didn't understand
what CrazyChris referred too.

In Inventories Requests, CrazyChris writes:

As the bag is loose, the set has been openend.

It is no problem to create such bags and fill them with whatever parts you want.

Comments from Submitter:
Just opened two of these sets. String missing in both, only 2 2x10 bricks in each and the gate top was included but missing from current inventory.

Did you open new sealed sets or used sets?
As per instructions I do agree for the string (but the string is shown on one
of the box images).
I don't agree for the bricks. Look at page 7 of the instructions: there are
3 red 2x10 bricks necessary for that model.

In this case, I believe it is a mistake in the instructions.

And the gate top doesn't show up in the instructions for None of the models
(only the gate base is used as handle). So, if it is really in a new set, it
should be marked as extra.

Without an official piece count, it's really hard to determine if something
is an extra or not, especially in a universal type set like this one. If in
doubt, I would recommend listing the fence top as a regular part.

Yes, I know. The set has an inventory note. When the correct figure is added
to the catalog the inventory will be corrected.

I know this bit is not your job, but shouldn't the warning about ot parting

Yes, it is on a long list of things to improve about the partout system. If an
inventory has a note, it should pop up in a special box when the user starts
to part out the set.

we re-packaged using a foil heat sealer machine.
When I was a child (and also today), I opened lots of MISB sets from the early

Very strange that people start to doubt the authenticity of a MISB bag, no?

you look at the inventory page first, you do not see the warning.

It seems strange to say this is the inventory when it is not correct, when other
sets not inventoried don't have false inventories.

Please make changes to the following inventory:

Set No: 801 Name: Gear Set
*
801-1 (Inv) Gear Set
111 Parts, 1970
Sets: Universal Building Set: Gears

* Delete 1 Part x77 Black String, Cord (Undetermined Type)
* Add 1 Part 3186 Red Fence Gate 1 x 4 x 2
* Change {3 to 2} Part Red 3006 Brick 2 x 10

I opened two sealed sets, one from 1970, the other from 1972. I know the years
because they included catalogues. Both had only two 2x10 red bricks. I am not
unfolding the instructions I have because I'm selling them as new, but I
believe your references to them.

And the gate top doesn't show up in the instructions for None of the models
(only the gate base is used as handle). So, if it is really in a new set, it
should be marked as extra.

I've no problem with that

I don't foresee any problems with approving these requests, but it would
be great if you could post a couple photos of the sets for future reference.
Also, please describe the condition of the sets when you obtained them (brand
new, used, etc.). This thread will be saved permanently.

The sets were new/shrink-wrapped.

Sorry, can't provide images as I took the parts I needed, parted out the
rest and recycled the boxes. I will remember in future.

The inventory of 801-1 includes set 802-1 with a note that says "Exactly the
same polysterene tray which includes all of set 802 is also in this set. The
wrapping around this tray (the box of set 802) is not included. Together with
this polysterene tray is another box, which contains all of the other bricks."

However, the contents of the polystyrene tray included in the sets I opened varied
to the stated inventory of 802-1, in that only 1 of 3707 was included, but with
an additional 3705 (total 2). I cannot say whether this was because 802-1 is
currently inventoried incorrectly or that 801-1 doesn't actually include
set 802-1 but a very similar variant of it. I wasn't sure how to reflect
this is the current inventory of 801-1.
