For the first time, a seller has blocked me from buying, and I'm wondering
if I did something against the rules. I had a cart ready to check out, and sent
them a message to ask about a couple of variants (screen shot of the message
below).
When I click back on the store cart, I now see the following message "Seller
Refuses Service. This seller does not want to sell to you and has placed you
on their stop list."
I'm really confused, and am wondering if I violated any rules by sending
the message before checking out? I'm just a hobby seller, with no negative
feedback, and am now worried they may leave me some (even though I didn't
even place an order). Should I reach out to them, or just let it go? Looking
for good advice.
Thanks in advance!

I would suggest that is pretty strong indicator that they don't differentiate
variants. You broke no rules, they are just rude. And you can't leave feedback
without a transaction. Time to move on to another shop!

You did nothing wrong, some sellers just don't like to deal with valid questions
so they block the buyer. Their reasoning is a buyer who asks questions is going
to be trouble.
Add that seller to your block list and move on.
Feedback can only be given if there is an actual order

Maybe I came across as a pain in the arse? It's just with the new variant
merges, I'm trying to buy authentic "old" parts to recreate old sets,
and there isn't much way of knowing now without asking first. 🤷🏼♀️

There was a post about this, and one of the reasons I can think of that you might
not have considered is that there may be less of the older variants available
as they either get lost or destroyed somehow over long periods of time.
I don't know if this point was mentioned in that post but it is getting harder
to find specific variants of very old pieces.
Cheers ...

Thanks for the advice and feedback! I'll move on to another shop. Too

You violated no rules. The seller doesn't want to deal with your questions
and chose to be rude about it. However, many sellers aren't going to pull
inventory and check for ~ $3 of parts.
You can use the Advanced Search Tool (see attached photo):
https://www.bricklink.com/searchAdvanced.asp
I filled it out and you can see the results in the attached photos.

I guess you proved your point about the variation controversy, would it not just
be better to find a store that has an exceptional feedback score and states they
differentiate part variations in their store terms.
It's really no different than picking to shop at a store with tons of negatives
then posting of your horror story here on the forum, or not choose a store with
instant checkout or one offering flat rate shipping then complaining on the forum
that shipping charges on Bricklink are way to high.
Their are tons of really good sellers here on Bricklink, but you are required
to spend
the time to search them out.
It's part of the marketplace - its not always about who's got the lowest

I thought that nobody cared about variants hence the merge? This muuuuust be
a fluke.
To the OP - try another store. Better to find they aren’t accommodating to a
customers simple questions before ordering than after.

| Thank you for your response, but I definitely wasn't trying to prove any
points, or just complain on the forum. I just had a genuine question about why
I may have been stop listed since it's never happened before.
I do greatly consider feedback scores and read store terms before shopping.
I also am never shopping just by lowest price. I usually am shopping for one
specific item to recreate an old set, and that can sometimes limit it to only
a couple of stores (who don't always have any mention of variants in their
terms). I figured asking first before ordering was the right way to go. I've
been burned before by not asking first, and then receiving a common variant worth
3 cents but the seller had priced it at the cost of the old, more unique variant.
So, I chalked it up as a learning experience.
I'm a fairly small hobby buyer and seller, so I'm learning as I go.
I appreciate having the forum to ask questions, and usually err on the side of
it being something I need to learn more about vs it being another buyer/seller's
fault.
Thanks for your feedback and suggestions.
