| I noticed that newly merged part 44302 has no description summarising the variants
- I'm not sure if this is a common oversight on all the merged pieces as
I've only checked this one.
I'm used to seeing variant messages for parts that have "soft" variants
- why do these merges not have them? I'd argue they are clearly significant
variants worth noting if they used to be listed separately.

For sure, notes must be added, the difference must be noted.

An additional note has been added. I am trying to add notes as the merges happen.
However, since I am not the one doing the merging, I have to check things after
the fact and may miss one here or there. Thanks for the notice.

To my dismay, this is a merged page too, without a note indicating the different
merged parts.

I feel your pain.
However, it now has a shiny new note, also.
Thanks for letting me know.

| 553b would warrant such a notice since 553c was just merged into it.
In the past, items were flagged as obsolete but remained in the catalog. This
allowed them to be preserved for a time but removed the ability for sellers to
continue using them. This options provides a number of benefits such as preserving
price history (for a while) and not breaking innumerable want lists. What is
the downside to doing this instead of the current process?

You will have to ask the people at BrickLink corporate because this was their
decision and it was rushed through by them.

If they are messing around so much with item numbers and merges why not just
change the undetermined 553 to 553u and then make the "b" variant the
main entry, leaving only 553a and 553u until it is corrected and eliminated.
