This week I came into the possession of a "Baseplate 10 x 48 with Train Ferry
Set 343 Stud Pattern" (911) with length 47. As visible in the photograph,
it misses a row of studs on one side (left side in the first picture). The person
who sold this to me claims it is original and from his own collection. Is this
a known variant of this part? Has anyone ever seen this before?

The second picture shows that the discoloration on the short edge of the plate
is the same as all around, which would indicate that the plate has not recently
been cut.
I guess it's not impossible but it seems very strange to me that this baseplate
would have been sold one stud too short.

The base plate has been shortened.

It has been shortened, but is this part:

Part No: 911 Name: Baseplate 10 x 48 with Train Ferry Set 343 Stud Pattern
*
911 Baseplate 10 x 48 with Train Ferry Set 343 Stud Pattern
Parts: Baseplate {Light Gray}

If listing this part for sale mention in the description that it has been shortened,
is a Used part, and include the image if it is from your own collection.

Cheers ...

It can't be listed for sale.

I thought I remember reading that Lego sometimes made mistakes while they were
cutting baseplates back in those days. Isn't it possible this is one of those?

Even if they did, it isn't part 911.

It can't be listed for sale.

See section 1.2.4.: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/terms_of_service_seller.page

That section does not explicitly cover manufacturing mistakes or defects.

It would be interesting to see if a representative of The LEGO Group had anything
in particular they'd know about defective parts and whether they can be sold
on this site.

Cheers ...

People *do* sell misprints here - I imagine that the only defects that couldn't
be sold would be those that have actually been recalled.
