I feel silly asking for this but can someone please refer me to a page or a forum
post with a full list of parts that have variants.

Oh dear gods.

This is what I am looking for:
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogRelCat.asp?relID=4
and perhaps this too
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogRelCat.asp?relID=27

I remember seeing quite a lengthy list, but not as huge..

Need to show this to someone and that someone will have a heart attack after
seeing this. Guaranteed.

What do I do?

I usually take care on variants which exist in BL catalogue.
Now with the newest odd variants merge, I am unsure how I proceed.
I will at the moment still differentiate them on my own but in the future I would
rather go in line with the BL catalogue again.

I was not asking for myself, but as for what you said - same. We will go on case
by case basis but I suspect will ultimately shift closer and closer to what BL
catalog tells us.

Some buyers will want the vintage variants of certain parts (for example original
4079) etc so that kind of variants will always be differentiated. In reality
most buyers don't care, but overall I am sad to see that the easy solution
was chosen on how to deal with this. It is both frustrating and upsetting.

Wrong example
It was the intermediary mould (2007-2022) that had the ugly sprue mark.
The original 4079 (1980-2010) didn’t have the ugly sprue mark.
The new 4079 (2022-) doesn’t have the ugly sprue mark.
Except for colours and tiny markings, there’s almost no way to differentiate
‘original’ and ‘new’.

Ah, I think I might have not had the 2022+ variant in my hands just yet! Either
way - some buyers want the original original parts. Even when there are
no actual differences whatsoever, besides the part having some sort of an oldschool
thing. Fabuland/erased fabuland logo, anyone?

May a forum regular who asked me for this raise your hand

Someone caring about this will also care about the 4079 being the oldschool variant,
having the oldschool mould ID, and also sounding right lol. But yes, I
might have picked a slightly more suitable example

I imagine many sellers will follow this too. If BL differentiates mold variants,
most (hopefully all) sellers follow them. Whereas for parts where there are known
variants that BL does not distinguish them, I think most sellers do not differentiate
them. Some will, but most don't. After a tiny minority of previously individually
catalogued parts have been merged, there might well be a lag but eventually these
just become parts with known variants that are not recognized by BL like many
other parts already in the catalogue.

My rule of thumb for distinguishing variants in my shop:

If a buyer were to receive these two (slightly different) parts in one lot in
their order, are they going to question whether some of them are fake or unusual?

It's the same with colors. If the parts I am listing are too different to
use in one project, then I either split them or make a note.

**I realize that larger shops can't possibly do this.

What do you mean by variant and/or why do you need the information? Variant means
multiple things even for plain, undecorated parts. Take a look at the humble
3001.

Part No: 3001 Name: Brick 2 x 4
*
3001 Brick 2 x 4
Parts: Brick

The note there says "This part has a dizzying array of variants, only a few
of which have separate catalog entries."

So do you mean parts with variants that are recognized and catalogued as mold
variants, or parts that have known but uncatalogued variants that are not important
enough to be catalogued individually? There might also be some unknown variants
too but obviously they won't be on a list.

Some people care about all variants whether or not they are catalogued, whereas
others only care about mold variants if they are catalogued, and others still
don't care about variants if the part does the same job.

Nah this is completely unrelated. I am working with someone who's building
an automatic LEGO part recognition utility. a) some variants will be important
for them, while some may be critical b) the ones that don't matter should
be removed from the list of parts that they need.

Some time very soon some of you might start getting weird messages, asking to
use your shops to filter for a wishlist... looking to place 1 part per 1 lot
type of an order. I won't tell you how huge that wishlist is so you do not
get scared away

Thanks for the help everyone.
