| Lego, in the new lego life magazine for 2024 has a little leaflet included that
promotes donating “old” bricks to lego so they can redistribute them to other
kids.
Sounds good right?
Helps the environment(does anyone you know just throw their old bricks they don’t
play with anymore in landfills or on the ground to rot?) and it gives kids who
don’t have LEGO(because it’s soooooo expensive these days, they don’t know about
Bricklink)) a chance to play with some.
The old Lego will have to be sorted by every individual part. So think of this;
A box arrives at the donation depot, there are some old sets from the 70s, 80s,
and early 2000s. Some are in good condition and others are dirty and damaged.
Then the person looking in the box sees some loose bricks in the bottom of the
box. He picks up a handful. 7 out of the 16 bricks are off brand! He has five
choices.
(A) sort through every last brick to find all the non-LEGO.
(B) wash all the bricks, and ignore the non-LEGO and send it off.
(C) return the box to sender.
(D) throw the whole box out.
(E) go for lunch.
As you can see reuse of LEGO is not that simple. Who ever came up with the idea,
while they may have had good intentions, they weren’t thinking about the things
that need doing for a charity like this. The people who sort and wash will need
to be paid. And not all Lego collections are clean, and fake Lego free.
So while I think this is a great idea there are some problems.
Let’s hope the LEGO Group can handle the challenge.
I hope that if Lego does do sorting, they can hire some people that care about
the product that they are working with. 
I know this is not a very nice look at the new charity, but if you have any good
information please let me know.
I would love to know that the brick we all know and love, will bring joy to the
less fortunate.

Yes I'm sure that Lego is up to the challenge.
Anyway I've been recycling my bricks by giving them to the local library.
Some of them are even new bricks that just don't sell (e.g. almost anything
magenta)

I've found far worse things that come from pets in LEGO lots. Some cats must
think that big box thing in the garage is a new litter tray filled with multicoloured
litter.

sooo, I was freegan for 3 years. Yes, yes they do. Also I know a well known Youtuber
who found something like 20-40lbs on a dive once. People do throw them away.
People throw EVERYTHING away. I have found literal macbooks, gift cards, new
with tag items. You name it, and not in small amounts. Literal metric tons of
items annually. Americans especially are incredibly wasteful people.
Also, I frequent the goodwill bins. I can tell you most of the donated lego gets
tossed in these bins and they go to the landfill at the end of the day. I've
been there many full shifts and the only one nit picking out Lego out of hundreds
of people is myself. Most days its so damaged that I leave it.

My personally point of view, is that if you are getting this stuff from a charity,
if its dirty or full of fakes, and that bothers you. You probably don't need
charity as much as a humbling.

| +1 the stuff people throw away is crazy. when I was a young teen I would go thru
recycle bins to collect bear bottles to return to the bear store for money and
then upgraded to scrap metal and while collecting I would find that people throw
away almost anything you can think of.
from boxes of lego to sealed bottles of brandy (one guy literally gave me half
a 24 pack of unopened beer bottles), computers (which I used for like 3 years
before I could afford one myself), laptops, TVs (which I still use in my room
to this day after I found it in the garbage like 5+ years ago). once I even found
an old electronic radio system thing which I sold for $300 in less then a week
(had to refund about half as it got damaged in shipping) but yah never underestimate
what people will throw out

Indeed. I started looking for cans for extra cash. Found so many items I taught
myself ebay. 3 years of ebay I was able to put a down payment on my house with
the cash I made from *trash* and cans. I moved away and didn't have opportunities
in my new city.
I don't buy anything new at all to this day unless its impossible (food,
car parts, etc). Its all used. Getting on ebay is how I got back into the lego
hobby, which is also how I ended up here eventually. Weird world but I'm
grateful for the experiences.

Same! ebay is what brought me to bricklink although it was because for me ebay
didn't work out to well but bricklink did although I take the opposite
approach and like to buy things new whenever possible as opposed to used but
that's probably since in general I've always had horrible luck with used
things from lego to electronics always being broken (except if I found it
in the trash in which case it often works )

have issues with excess food waste! Keeping him happy does mean having a steady
food supply for him!

Congratulations, you've just reinvented the domesticated dog!
Real live bears don't make good pets and sometimes they do attack people.
However, some bears are friendlier than others.
Some people do hunt bears for meat. I know a guy who tried bear meat. He says
it's similar to other forms of red meat, such as beef and bison.
There's a restaurant near me that serves ostrich burgers.

I was in the exotic animal Business for a couple decades and knew some bear owners.
Whats sad is they aren't really that bad of a pet for the right trainer,
I can think of 25 worse pets that are far more common (looking at you, exotic
cat people), but sadly most people think you need to use punitive training to
accomplish even the most basic tasks and can't house them correctly. Which
is why attacks happens generally speaking.
One of my favorite trainers said in one of her books that if you can't train
a chicken without touching it you have no business with kids or any animals.
A bit extreme, but her point stands IMO
Anyway, back to bear stores.

group out there based on user size.

I was a professional Animal wrangler and breeder for 20+ years. I worked as a
trainer out of Hollywood for about 5. Wealthy people actually take damn good
care of their animals as a general statement. Most other people treat them as
trading cards.

| Yes it is disgusting what people throw out.
I’ve heard of companies that throw out 85 gal drums of maple syrup! Just because
the expiry date in looming!
To me I just can’t conceive the thought of people throwing out lego! It’s just
wrong! It’s bad for the environment, the others that could have had it, and for
the bricks!
The world we live in is just so sad.

indeed although its important to note exceptions as damaged (I'm not talking
minor damage I'm talking cracked bricks, bricks that are chewed up, etc)
Lego should not be donated. Ive throw out hundreds of pounds of badly damaged
lego over the years and would feel bad if people sent that type of lego to the
charity

If they can't donate it then at least they should put it in a bin with other
plastics and send it to a plastics recycling facility. I'm sure non-LEGO
elements wouldn't be a problem to recycle into new products made from recycled

What needs to happen is that the charities need to be made aware that there are
options that would reduce their landfill contributions and therefore make their
waste streams somewhat more environmentally friendly. That might mean changes
in the way in which charities operate.
As for the plastics, it's just an extra bin that they throw plastics into
and have collections set up on a regular basis.
There's also a fairly new recycling method that shreds the incoming plastics
into small pieces and then steam under pressure is used to turn them back into
oil products. That means a recycling effort might be possible to implement because
that oil product can then be refined and reused.
It does, however, mean that a lot more effort has to be focused on recycling
products instead of sending them to waste streams. Companies are slow to implement
changes to how they handle waste streams because a lot of it involves expenses
associated with handling and shipping the waste. Individuals may do their part
for the recycling process but there still isn't a properly focused effort
on getting any recycling process to 100% or near that in terms of efficiency.
Our world is slowly becoming a plastic world, but we can make a difference. Even
the oceans are getting plastics and other floating debris removed from them.
If they can clean up the oceans surely diverting the plastics out of landfill
isn't entirely impossible. Someone just needs to come up with a properly
scaled solution that fits the current and future needs of plastics recycling.
Just my 2c worth.

| Yes, since big companies can’t or won’t do anything we got to do something. Often
it’s too expensive to reuse plastics, so companies do nothing. And government
incentives will just raise taxes, therefore raising the price of everything.

take it anymore. There's been large campaigns to explain to Americans that

| Canada was doing the same thing except we shipped our stuff to the Philippines,
were it just sat to rot, or just go into their landfills.
Typical north America, fix the problem by making it disappear for others to fix/or
just don't fix it till you are forced to.

New York City's recycling program is abysmal. Most New Yorkers don't
have plastic recycling bins, so they put cardboard boxes directly on the sidewalk.
When it rains, the boxes gets soaked and disintegrate. The end result is a soggy
wet mess that jams sorting machines and ultimately can't be recycled.
Beverage containers are better since New York State has a bottle bill and people
go around collecting bottles and cans and bring them back to recycling centers,
but I don't know what the recycling centers do with them.
After China stopped buying almost all plastic waste in January 2018, Malaysia
picked up the slack and began importing a lot of waste from other countries,
but now even they're starting to get fed up with all this garbage.
China still recycles a lot of electronic waste, but the people who take apart
used electronics generally work without proper protective equipment and many
develop skin and respiratory diseases from touching and breathing toxic metals.
The people who mine rare metals to make new electronic devices also work under
pretty poor conditions. Many come from poor countries without workers' rights.

| Yes China has horrible working conditions, they have become a dump and free source
of cheap labour for us.
Most EV batteries are made there and the waste from the refinement is crazy!
And they are the one who have to live in polluted, dirty, and water contaminated
land.
Just so we can have “clean” cars.(until the batteries die and need to be replaced,
then what happens to the batteries?)

Some people are incredibly resourceful. Once upon a time, I came across a few
AA/AAA power functions battery boxes that someone (probably me ) had forgotten
to take the batteries out of and by the time I found them several years later
they were corroded shut. I sold them for cheap on BrickLink to a buyer that was
able to clean them and restore them to useable condition.

I sold an old technic set (I think it was auto chassis) once and I had mentioned
that a few of the long technic beams had been discarded and I got a DM from someone
pissed I can discarded literally broken in half and chewed on by a dog part because
he claimed could fix them.
I asked him if he wanted the set, I still had the trash parts, he said no, but
other people would for sure want to fix the broken parts.
I'm the queen of repurposing and fixing things, but I think some people become
obsessive.

| wow... I remember people often told me that damaged parts sell well as filler
so I tried and with sub 2 cent filler for plates and shipping capped at $10 in
Canada even if they ordered 2 thousand of them. I sold like 20 over the span
of 1 year and broke 3 or so $1 containers due to the weight of storing them.

There are people who simply throw away anything they no longer want/need/use.

sets at retail. And some of these children may not have access to the internet,

Anyway, it sounds pretty similar to sorting used bulk for sale on BrickLink.
Personally, if I were an underprivileged child, I would probably be happy just
to have toys and I'm not sure I would really care if a few off-brand parts
made their way into my collection. But since this program is run by the LEGO
Group, I can understand why they want to limit it to LEGO® brand parts only.
| | As you can see reuse of LEGO is not that simple. Who ever came up with the idea,
while they may have had good intentions, they weren’t thinking about the things
that need doing for a charity like this. The people who sort and wash will need
to be paid. And not all Lego collections are clean, and fake Lego free.
So while I think this is a great idea there are some problems.
Let’s hope the LEGO Group can handle the challenge.
I hope that if Lego does do sorting, they can hire some people that care about
the product that they are working with.

Here in the Chicago area, Bernie's Book Bank does similar work but with books
instead of bricks. People donate children's books to Bernie's and they
have volunteers who sort through donated books and pick out any that are damaged
or otherwise not appropriate for children. The vast majority of the books they
receive are fine, but since each of the children they serve only receive a few
books per year, it's important to make sure that every book is in good condition.
I'm sure the LEGO Group probably does something similar with their used bulk.

It's okay to question or challenge how charities operate; some have been
used to hide nefarious activities. This one is run by the LEGO Group which
is a corporation, so they're subject to the LEGO Group's corporate policies.

Indeed, that was implied in my statement above. Not only does the LEGO Group
only accept genuine LEGO®-brand parts for branding and marketing purposes, but
they may not want off-brand parts since they can't vouch for the quality
or compatibility with real LEGO. But, as you pointed out, even real LEGO has
some quality control issues.

I've developed many critisms of TN since moving here. But I will say Dolly
Partons book program is brilliant. Glad to hear about similar programs.
I didn't grow up poor, but my friends did. My mother always bought us thrift
store books, and I was always happy to have them.
Another thing I've learned living in more impoverished areas is people are
so busy being alive they don't realize these programs exist.

because it’s being burned.

Growing up I never understood why my friends poor families only bought new stuff.
I remember taking my best friend as a child to a thrift store with me because
they had a toy section and she was blown away. Said she'd never been to one.
Same later in life when I was in the life of a child that was growing up with
nearly nothing. She was confused as to why nothing was in packaging.
pretty sure they burn trash here for the same thing. I know my neighbors also
burn their trash and leaves every year. They don't compost anything, cut
down trees like crazy. I know they also recycle basically nothing. It's been
hard for my West Coast Soul to get used to. I think I'm the last house on
my side of the street with any trees.
I sold a property down the road, and it was so beautiful. I drove past it for
the first time in a year and the guy who bought it clear cut it.

they sold the house the new owner cut down the tree.
The city needs trees to keep the air clean!
I live in a small town and we have too many trees here. To get to my town from
the nearest city is a 3 hour drive with nothing but trees on the side of the
highway.
But that’s good because in the winter in can get down to -40c and we have to
heat with wood.

I didn't grow up poor, but my friends did. My mother always bought us thrift
store books, and I was always happy to have them.
Another thing I've learned living in more impoverished areas is people are
so busy being alive they don't realize these programs exist.

When I was in New York, one of my coworkers told me about a program at New York
University that gives free food to college students, but I was so busy that I
didn't even have time to go, and even if I did, they're so busy that
they don't even check to see if you're actually a student at NYU.

reminds me of a barfly I met once. He always ate breakfast at various hotels
free because no one bothers to check who anyone is.
I was like, I'd feel too wrong doing that, but its also a brilliant idea
just in case. lol

| We donate all of our lego to our local grade school which I work at. We come
across a lot of used lego, prob not all real lego lol, which people give us because
they know we sell them. We don't sell used or do we want to, so we send
them all to the school and the different class rooms use them for whatever.
Schools are always a great place to donate to.
