We purchased a number of LEGO sets to "break" about a year ago.

We just opened them (damaged box sets) and unlike the year before when we did
the same thing this time around we found quite a few damaged elements.

Anyone else have this happen?

Very odd. The minor damage on the box should not have had such defined damage
on the elements.

Not here. Damaged box sets are usually perfect for a parts seller.

A strange thing I have seen recently was a part swapped out for a completely
unrelated part, that was pretty odd to me. The only other thing was this little
baby short shot, my first ever.

Cool we have found a number of short shots and marbled items as well but in different
loads.

I had a weird extra on a set I was parting out - I think it was a 1x2 round plate
in an unexpected color for that set. All the rest of the parts (including the
extras) were there.

And I had another set that I was parting out with 2 extra sticker sheets (that
is, 3 instead of 1).

What vintage were the sets ? Could they have been from the era of brittle parts
?

Within the last year. We purchase up a bunch of sets during the summer months
and then break and inventory them during the winter months. So this batch should
have been in the last 6-10 months purchased.

Just an odd uptick. We used to find maybe 1-2 elements damaged from the crushed
boxes but now we are looking at 100-200 elements in each batch. We are going
through each box to check for damage but the amount of box damage does not match
the amount of element damage.

So here is an example. Usually no issue with elements. About to open and upload
this one as parts.

So here is an example. Usually no issue with elements. About to open and upload

You have found out that buyer beware is what you should worry about. Buying crushed
sets with the expectation of undamaged parts in them, especially that badly crushed,
is unrealistic.

You might have got lucky with previous crushed or damaged sets, but trust me,
it's not realistic to expect pristine elements out of sets that are that
heavily crushed.

Buyer beware!

In most stores in Australia, where I live, one would simply take this to the
checkout area and an attendant would tell me I'd be able to exchange that
for another set. Sometimes if there is obvious damage, like opened boxes, they
will take it away and have it returned to the manufacturer.

As a buyer in a store you have an implied right to a certain level of product
quality. If you come across sets like these, the manager might heavily discount
them for you, if you ask them, and tell them you only want the parts from them.
But they'd also advise of the possibility of crushed or damaged parts,
and that you'd be a lot less likely to get refunds or replacements if you
purchased damaged boxes.

I did in fact find a damaged box once and paid for it, I got lucky as the LEGO
inside is undamaged. It is a big gray area when shopping, if you find something
damaged, you can ask for a discount in some stores here. Some will take it off
you and tell you that it's going back to the manufacturer, which varies according
to store policy.

If you find sets with a tear in the box, or obvious signs that they have been
tampered with, check the inventory on BrickLink over your mobile phone. If you
can't validate that the inventory is complete, you might want to spend your
money on something that is complete.

Just my experiences as a shopper here in Australia.

Cheers ...
