| Hello,
I'm currently disassembling, cleaning and replacing parts if needed from
3 technic sets.
Now I came across some technic gear wheels which are a different version (same
color but a different axle hole) than the ones listed in the sets inventory here.
I can easily order the right ones but I was wondering if it would be acceptable
selling them with the different version of the parts?
What are your thoughts on this.

You'd need to sell them as incomplete, as you don't have the right parts.

My thoughts exactly but is it possible that set pieces change over time?
Meaning that the first set has older parts compared to the sets made after a
few years.... Never really thought about it... But can that happen?

That can happen but then there’s great chances someone would have added the variants
to the inventory as Alternates.

Yes, that happens all the time. What sets and parts are we talking about?

It's set 8258 but looking at the gear wheel pieces further, it's a bit
of a mess. Almost all gear wheels are 2 different versions. So I'm keeping
a list of what to order to make it all exactly as the inventory here.

But to be clear, if parts are listed as alternates it's ok to use those in
a listed as complete set?

Yes. That’s the meaning of Alternate.
From the help page:
“Alternate Items - Parts from the Regular Items section that differ from
one production run of a set to another. These are typically mold variations of
parts. A match ID number is entered alongside the part or group of parts in the
Regular Items section and the part or group of parts in this section to identify
that they are matched with each other. The match ID number in each inventory
starts at one and is incremented by one for each match. Refer to Additional Information
About Alternate Items for further details.”

Lots more to read on that page.
Also: in inventories, it’s says “N of part Pa” in Regular and “N of part Pb”
in Alternate. That doesn’t mean all parts found in a set were of the same variant.
You can find about any mix of Pa & Pb, provided the total quantity is N.
LEGO uses what’s available, LEGO doesn’t care about variants.

This is yet another example showing that the wording "alternate" is very
confusing.
Unless if the user checks the definition or if somebody explains to him what
it means, he would not understand or cannot guess what "Alternate Items"
really mean here.
I don't have a different word that can better suggest what "alternate
items" are.
Maybe a link to the definition right besides the title "Alternate Items"
can help.
