| Hi
Building a MOC I found, I got to thinking. Do generally people build their MOCs
in real life before uploading them? And do you think it should be? Not as a rule
per say of course (I mean, it would be possible).
Kind of like in romhacking, some people do not playtest their games, and it's
obvious, and I don't think this is right.
What's your opinion/experience on it?

Every single MOC design I've ever created has been built in physical form
first before submitting.
Building digitally doesn't give you the full low down on integrtity, look,
balance or features (especially where movement is required). Digital collisions
between parts don't offer 100% accurate detection either - sometimes it's
impossibly lax (ie it's actually impossible to build what the software says
can be, due to poor collision), other times too strict. Building physically you
can see, feel and hear problems. Studio (and maybe other software) also doesn't
provide very good flexible parts - some don't flex at all and the others
are difficult to place/move/pose correctly. LDD did it soooooo much better, all
those years ago
So yeah, if you're not building in physical and you are putting MOCs out
there then you really should be building physically first, even for free MOCs.

I build my MOCs and don't upload them.
As for play testing, different people have different tolerances for using non-legal
techniques and making designs that are fragile but look good. When designs are
given away free, I don't think they need to be tested. Whereas if they are
being sold, then it is more important the designs work as if not buyers won't
buy designs in future.

I think that, if they are distributed (that is, more than just pictures), free
designs should be tested too or at least have a mention they were not tested.

An issue then is tested to what standard? When it comes to stability and tolerance
of non-legal connections there are so many views about what is acceptable. A
display model that sits on a shelf doesn't need to be as strong as a similar
model meant to be swooshed around. Unless LEGO published guidelines to testing,
one person's "I tested it and it was fine" is another person's
"It fell apart".

That goes as well for designs for sale.
I was just saying that it’s not because a design is gratis and free of financial
consequences that the author shouldn’t have a tiny bit of “pride of craftsmanship”
and mention issues or doubts.
As for official guidelines, LEGO gave us some: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/guidelines.page

I think it is dependent on the model and the designer. For example, I have sold
thousands of sets of instructions to my models... without test building anything.
I only build them afterwards, as I use the money from selling the instructions
to order parts and build the model myself. I've never really encountered
much issue or had many complaints about my "untested" instructions.
If I did, it would likely be something quickly rectified.
At a certain point, it's up to the designer. I have tested small functional
parts before but hardly every have all of the loose bricks on hand to fully build
my designs before publishing. I have built over two hundred official LEGO City
trucks over the last few years and designed about a hundred myself. I'm
at the point now where I "know" if something will work or not as far
as what I design. This may not be the case for everyone but I stick to designing
what I am comfortable working with.

| Good to see most go my way. I bought (yes, bought) a MOC that I’m 99.9% sure
wasn’t built. Too many things don’t make sense, are unreadable, and there’s no
picture (and the seller told me: “send me a pic when it’s done!”. I thought “ok,
why not”, now I understand why)

| A quick update: after 2 months waiting for a re-designing, the new version would
cost me an additional $400 🤣 I already paid over $500 in the first place
So no. This guy shouldn't be allowed to do paying MOCs.

| Sadly it's not on bricklink and there is no such thing on the website.
But I'm really pissed. He didn't even change the instructions. It's
as crappy to read and follow as it was.
He just optimized some parts of the build (instead of putting a 1*3 next to a
1*1 now it's a 1*4 for example), and put "I recommend to start at step
13, build up, and then come back and do the first 12 steps".
So lazy. So greedy.
Oh sure, he has over 40 MOCs. Easy when you only do them on computer. Can't
imagine how many people he scammed with that.

Not even a comment section?
Maybe that was a sign… or it could be one for the future.

I highly recommend building MOCs in studio before buying the parts so you can
get an idea of how the build process translates into real life; that way you
can avoid wasting money (outside of spending $5 on instructions)
What MOC is it?

A walking panda
Ideally it would indeed be the best way to proceed. But it would take the fun
out of Legos definitely for me.

| I've built a few of my own models.
My first two were built from LDD models I created - I had to modify them heavily
before they became wholly functioning.
My latest two models are from buying large and varied amounts of parts, and a
massive amount of mashing - this is my favourite method, but it's more expensive
