I’m in the us. I want to buy in France and ship to France. Can’t see a way
to change the shipping address without changing my profile. Are there instructions
on this?

Hi,

There’s no specific instructions for this.  You can change your profile address.
I’d say you should be able to change the address at checkout too (so, only for
one order) but I’m not sure it’s not limited to same-country addresses now (due
to tax obligations).

As you’re not a seller, there’s no side effects to temporarily changing your
profile.  (Sellers need to be re-verified when they do this.)

Note that there’s chances the prices in French stores for a French buyer will
be 20% more than what you’re seeing as a US buyer, as relatively many French
sellers are VAT-registered and therefore can export at 0% VAT (so 16.7% lower).

You may already know, so for others reading...

You as buyer, have the ability to change your shipping address using the popup
form provided via the Change Address tab within that step of the checkout process
(see screenshot #1)

This ability however, falls short of change of country. Which for valid reasons
must be done on your BL main account information page (see screenshot #2)

We it me, I’d make arrangements with the vendor/s beforehand. We get such "ship-to"
requests as seller from time-to-time, which we have rarely failed to accommodate
so far. Understandably though, not all vendors are gonna be willing. So it's
always best to keep in mind the why-nots going into your talks.

That’s not really possible.

With a US address: Sales tax is due and collectable by Bricklink.  If the French
seller is VAT-registered, the product is exported with 0% VAT.
But if you make an arrangement to have it sent in France, then the seller will
have the legal obligation to re-add the 20% French VAT.
So you pay two taxes.

With a French address: no Sales tax, and if the French seller is VAT-registered,
the product has a 20% VAT included, but it’s all automatic.
(Well, the buyer may have to pay Use tax when they get back in the US, but that’s
between the buyer and their state.)

Hello Sylvain,

I think there's a misunderstand here. If a buyer in another country wants
to make a purchase from us paying the requisite taxes of said transaction, but
would like the order shipped to an address here in the states, negotiating this
beforehand, we usually try and accommodate such requests. Try, anyway.

As I understood it, the OP wants to purchase from a French member to have the
order shipped to a French address and not their registered US address. Perhaps
vacation, business trip, or any number of other reasons we've run across
in our years selling here. Of course I could be misunderstanding the OP entirely.

We understood the same thing.  What I’m saying is that:

1. If the buyer “stays” in the US on BrickLink, they’ll pay US Sales tax that
they shouldn’t have to pay if their BL address was in France (except maybe as
a Use tax, on their own, not via BL, when they come back in the US with the product).

2. If the French seller is VAT registered in France (many sellers are), then
they sell with a 20% VAT to French addresses (included in the total price, not
collected by BL) and with a 0% VAT to non-EU addresses.
BL automatically change the prices depending on the account’s address (or IP
address if not logged-in).
So, if the buyer “stays” in the US on BL, BL will automatically remove the VAT
and the seller will legally be obliged to re-add it if the send to a French address,
and that adds complications¹.

It’s simpler to just change the account’s address temporarily, especially when
you’re not a seller.

As for your US example, if you send a package in the US (in a state with Sales
tax of course), BL has to collect sales tax on it.  If the buyer is in another
country, then BL can’t do that.  So that’d be tax evasion.  So your example is
limited to sending to US addresses without sales tax or without facilitator laws.

So what I’m doing is trying to make sure the “paying the requisite taxes of said
transactions (and not more taxes than necessary)” part is understood.

–––
¹ Actually, it’s even more complicated: a US resident in vacations in EU should
be able to have their VAT refunded (as they are not a EU resident)… but they
still have to pay it when they are here.

So, you're advising that we no longer accommodate traveling members in this
manner? Rather, we should have them change their registered membership address
in advance of buying, but only if they're not also registered as a seller?

So what I’m doing is trying to make sure the “paying the requisite taxes of said
transactions (and not more taxes than necessary)” part is understood.

I see. Thanks

I’m not so much advising anything as proposing to consideration.

If I were to advise something it would be to follow the laws.  What the laws
are and how to follow them is left as an exercise to the reader
…though, more seriously, it’s pretty obvious when taxes are due.
