I went to a Lego store here in Oregon, where retailers are allowed, not required,
to charge for shopping bags.

I bought a large set and a couple other sets, the total came to $271.46 and I
was asked if I wanted to buy a bag for 50 cents. I can not believe they are tying
to nickle and dime people like this.

Does you Lego store do this?

On the way home, I thought about it and I should have said "sure I'll
buy the bag for 50 cents, but you owe me $50 for the advertising on the way out
of the mall." Why do these comebacks usually come to me too late.

Over here in Canada we’ve been paying for plastic bags for years now but most
stores don’t even have those and if you want a bag you have to buy a reusable
one for several dollars are a paper one that will either cut you or rip while
walking to your vehicle. The plastic bags were the best. They would fit in any
garbage can perfectly but now the supply is gone so if more are needed I have
to buy plastic bags on Amazon…. What a world

In the Netherlands shops are not aloud to give free plastic bags. Next month
1 Juli also restaurants have to charge money for plastic food packages for take
away. Plastic straws are forbidden they have paper straws now packed in a little
plastic bag on drinking cartons.

My local store isn't allowed to dispense plastic bags due to a city ordinance
I believe. Ironic I think for a plastic toy company. Anyway, they now have these
really sturdy paper ones I kinda like. They stand up on their own and are good
for holding spare shipping supplies. They have certainly brightened up my storage
room.
When I purchased a couple big sets on June 1, they still had them in the brown
shipping cartons and attached some sturdy tape handles right to the box. It worked
really well!

I don't mind that plastic bags are disappearing or even that I have to pay
for a shopping bag now and then. It helps offset the climate guilt I have for
my polybag habit.

Sorry.  I was trying for a bit of levity but from your reaction I get it’s a

An instant return and refund request would have probably got you a free bag.

Very true, I considered it, but consumerism got the best of me. So, in the long
run, it is my own dang fault.

The aim is to reduce waste, not to earn a few more cent.

If you need a bag and don't want to pay for it, bring your own.

You would think right.

Follow the money, big retail funds lobbyists to scream bags kill everything living
so that politicians make them charge you for them. No more giving away millions
of dollars of free plastic bags as industry standard. Good scam really.

Or they might have been given a refund and had to leave the store empty handed,
wasting whatever fuel / costs it took to get to the store.

In the UK the Government advice is that the fee for a bag is not a tax but any
money raised from the sale of bags should be donated to good causes. Most big
companies declare on their websites how they much they move on to good causes.
e.g. Sainsburys have sent £8 to good causes from bag sales.

Just bring your own bags. Just like grocery shopping. Cake and Eat it is LONG
gone.

It probably has more to with environmental reasons than corporate greed. Here
in New York, plastic shopping bags are banned outright and paper bags cost 5¢.
