Let's say I pay a fair price for relatively rare part. When picking the order
the seller apologizes and says they don't have the piece and immediately
processes a refund for that piece only. I indicate to the seller that I now have
to source that piece elsewhere and pay another shipping fee. No reply. What feedback
would you leave this seller?

Hi,
Maybe you could find a solution together BEFORE to leave a negative feedback
to the seller.
Do you want to cancel the order because you placed it especially for that part
? If yes, it should be an option for you. Ask the seller if you could do it and
wait for the message to be read (you can see it if you send a message in Bricklink).
You shouldn't be penalized. And I suggest you don't penalize the seller
too with a negative feedback. He may not know you placed the order especially
for that part... and mistakes can happen
I hope you find a solution that suits you both.

I think the seller should refund at least part of the shipping fee if part of
the order can't be fulfilled, whether he or she knows the buyer's intention
or not. At the very least the offer should be made.

What they should do is buy the part from another seller and have it shipped to
you. That is what I would do.
If you do not hear anything from that seller I think a negative would be appropriate.
Not because of not having the part, but because they do not respond to you.

This is not always the case, I rarely read my messages on Bricklink because they
get forwarded to my email and I read them there.

would give them a suitable timeframe to respond, then try again. not everyone
is a day-to-day seller.

feedback is your own experience .. you do you,
there are 8 Billion+ other opinions on the planet currently

where their online system says they have it so you go in, and then its not there.
Wallmart is a good comparison where I have seen it have seen this. Do you talk
to customer service and ask for a refund of your gas or transit fare? Do you
ask then to get it shipped from another store to your house? No, you go to
another store, having unfortunately wasted a small amount of time and money.


The only reason this comes up here is because we have a feedback system and your
local retailer doesn’t. But that doesn’t explain completely different customer
expectations.

Given they told you and refunded the missing part I’d say your experience is
better than drive through service levels.

You also never trust that store's online system again if they allow you to
order something then claim no stock once you get there.

If the online system says they have it in stock, and I order it and arrange for
pickup, but when I arrive, it isn't there - yes, I am 100% complaining to
customer service and asking for some consideration for the money and time I wasted.

I would wait to leave feedback until you hear from the seller if they are going
to refund the shipping. You don't mention if this order is the single part
or if there are other parts you need. If you still want the other parts, then
the shipping charge is somewhat justified , although it depends on the order.
If the order was the 1 part, then they need to refund you the total you paid,
not just the part value.
Either way I would reserve judgement until you hear back from the buyer about
the final resolution. If they are prompt and refund everything, there is no reason
you cannot leave a positive about the experience. if they fail to respond or
respond negatively, then I see. no other choice but to leave negative feedback.
Also, if you don't get the full amount back and nothing is shipped, hopefully
you used Paypal to pay with and can open a case there .
I really hope this works out for you.
