Locking the forum behind a paywall is going to turn new users away from BrickLink.
I don’t think requiring accounts to be a day old would cause as many problems.

I mean the spammer would just wait a day then before posting (due to how infrequently
gummy posts are made (as in not every 15 min of anything) I think he does them
manually and just didn’t read what is posted) and then people who made an account
to post a question would be turned away

PayWall vs TimeWall would yield the same results as far as disgruntled new members
would be concerned..
not sure a 24 hour delay would be any sort of effective at stopping the spamming
though.
the upside of a PayWall is if the new member does start spamming, bricklink knows
exactly who it is & their online info to block them from future spamming.

| Not a good idea as that would hurt those who are here for help and would then
be turned away. Maybe just have a list of sites that are allowd and if anyone
posts a message with a link to a site that isn’t on that list Sylvian has to
first approve or decline the message

they would not be turned away, they would just be redirected straight to Bricklink

Forums should not be behind the paywall on bricklink. Not everything has to have
requirements. The forum is here to help others and a little fun spam shouldn’t
stop certain people from asking questions

I wouldn’t call it “a little fun spam”. This is a daily occurrence and it’s very
annoying. The moron spamming the forum doesn’t even take the time to read his
links. Are we sure it isn’t a bot?

i feel like i might just not know enough about it but i feel like if it was a
bot it would be at least a couple hours work to get it setup to do everything
it does meanwhile he post 1-2 message every few days about some gummies they
probably wont kill the people who eat them and probably lead to him getting 0
sales. he might even be reading this thread and continuing just for the sake
of having some fun. I highly doubt there is any major issues from once a day
spam as opposed to what we had in the past with 100+ back to back

| I think ending the spam is more important than having a slightly inconvenienced
buyer - I get that having the forum open without requirements is helpful, but
at what cost? Most of the people who post here already have feedback, and a lot
of them don't even pay any mind to this portion of the site; I personally
didn't even know it was this active until I checked it out mid-2022, 4 years
after joining the site
I also think that it's bad for BL's image if people can see how easily
spam gets through - having the bare minimum requirements (1 positive feedback)
to post in the forum at least provides some form of security measures, and I'm
sure the real users will understand and actually appreciate that there's
some sort of preventative to bots
Bricklink is a marketplace first and foremost, and it just happens to have a
forum for people to use - if people wanted to discuss Lego without wanting to
purchase anything, then there are a handful of other sites to use that are far
more "active" than our place
|
Isn’t bricklink more so a database funded by being a marketplace? So people who
want to inquire about topics regarding the database without being part of the
marketplace shouldn’t be turned away as they are likely to end up joining the
marketplace at some point in the future. I think the simplest solution is a simple
filter that could prevent spam

This is totally true, I think we just need more of them, I don't even understand
how these moderators are selected. I personally go on the forum once or twice
a day, and respond and help if I am first there, which is about 5% of the time
because the other people normally catch it first who do it full time. If you
got lets say ten more people with administrator, who were on twice a day, that
would really help make it so people have the power to reduce spam, and be more
helpful to the forum. Perhaps make becoming an administrator more available for
the not full time sellers who wanna help out. Of course I'd be willing to
help and support any way to make this website better, it's a great website,
and I love being on it.
Thanks, Noah

My fault for the confusion. I misspelled 1.

But that isn't the problem, if you can't buy or sell then you can't
get 1 positive feedback. Total Bricklink lockdown, existing buyers and sellers

Just a thought, not necessarily about this thread; Sometimes I think the world
takes everything too seriously. I look at everything to find humor in it. If
I may digress a bit. I collect Eaglemoss Star Trek and other things issues by
them. Last year they went bankrupt. A company called Master Replicas bought
all the stock from 8 warehouse around the world, all poorly documented. They
are now releasing some weekly. Quantities are limited on the most desirable
items and it is first come, first served. T MR's prices are fair, not gouged,
and people are emailing them with the most unkind statements calling them a term
more strong that poop because they do not have more of the discontinued items.
But that seems to be the world we live in. More and more people only consider
themselves and everything should be about them, their feelings, and what they
want.
Sorry for digressing a whole bunch.

no worries. Yeah, I agree people take everything to seriously these days. I wish
more people would just take a step back and realize life would be better for
everyone if weren't all stressed out and just has some fun every now and
then but I highly doubt were are going to move in that direction as a society
for at least a couple generations at the very least

I *far* prefer to get some SPAM, than to lose a buyer because he just registered,
has a $1000 order - and is a bit genuinly afraid - so he asks in Forum

Yes it is. Getting serious for a brief moment. Have a category for new members
posting in the forum, called........wait for it........New Members and they have
to post in that until they get some feedback, maybe one or two. Then forum users
could ignore that category of posts and the admins would not have to look through
a lot of posts to catch those who are spamming.

Well, I like to think that people help other people when they have the ability
to and are aware the other needs help.
For instance, if someone in the street is holding a map and looking like they’d
welcome help, I like to think someone will stop and try to help them.
That can’t work if tourists are limited to tourists streets.

Spammers don’t care where they post. They don’t even know there’s topics here
(one would say genuine members don’t know that either ), or they would post
their messages in all the topics at the same time. It’s easy to do.
IOW, they could be way more “efficient” if they cared to.
So not being able to post on the main forum wouldn’t deter them.
Besides, that goes against the argument (which is often raised) that spam doesn’t
look good for BrickLink. Spam frightens the new members, so let’s be sure only
the new members will see spam!

asks 'which problem???' .. then immediately explains what the problem
is...
*facepalm
would like to know the threshold for this terminology "some spam"...
if a new buyer is wanting to buy $1000 worth of stuff from you, a seller with
over 50,000 Feedback, and that purchase is dependent on if they can post in the
forum...? yeah, ok.... i am sure that scenario pops up more often than the spamming...
you are suggesting that the Forum , likely 50% of the members are sellers , would
let the buyer know your a good seller & they should buy from you...... instead
of them.
likely the new $1000 buyer would get massive other offers lower than your pricing.
irregardless of your feedback or what 'he's a good 'ol boy' status
others give you.
money talks, lowest prices usually win...
but hey... why not allow Spam.. if a little is ok & fun, don't complain when
it gets flooded...
Floods are fun too... right? or is that different...?
it was cool & allowed up until it got.. (wait for it...)... annoying.

As with other posts about feedback (not receiving enough / receiving the wrong

Maybe the site should rebrand as “FeedbackLink: the largest online marketplace

But not being an employee lets me be free to say when I don’t like what BL does.
There’s already a stretch between requirements to become a seller and requirments
to post on the forum but there’s a whole another one between working for BL and
agreeing wholeheartedly with everything BL does.
So, to be clear:
— What BL thinks doesn’t change what I can say.
— I think some people are too focused on feedback here.
— I think requiring a feedback to become a seller is not unreasonable.
— I don’t think using feedback to block or split the forum is a good idea.

{agrees he works for BL..}
BL thinks...?
does BL 'think' requiring feedback to sell is the thing to do or is it
a set rule that does not require anything to think upon.?
when does Spamming the forum become "unacceptable"...?
2 times a day, 20 times, 5,000 times...?
would you have the same opinion if new members were spamming at a rate 3x as
fast as you can delete the posts... or 20x ?
if that occured, would the piper break his flute due to Annoyance...?

Because YOU said I was working for BL and I was intentionally letting that slip
because that’s not the point.
Otherwise:
A = requiring a feedback for sellers
B = requiring a feedback for the forum
You’re mixing A & B. Strawman 1.
C = working for BL
D = agreeing with BL
You’re mixing C & D. Strawman 2.
E = being a moderator
F = being infeudated to BL
You’re mixing E & F. Strawman 3.
I could go on, decomposing “being infeudated” with “being an employee” and “working
for” and “working with,” or with your conflating “BL does A” with “agreeing with
A”….
The real point is that, whatever my status, whatever some other rules for other
parts of the site, I don’t think feedback should be required to post on the forum.

No, I don’t.
You’re just making strawmen after strawmen.
|
quote:
"There’s already a stretch between requirements to become a seller and
requirments
to post on the forum but there’s a whole another one between working for BL
and
agreeing wholeheartedly with everything BL does."
hmmmm you do understand what 'strawman" means correct?
if you do not 'work' for BL, why would you state there is a difference
between 'working for BL & agreeing with BL"
|
Because YOU said I was working for BL and I was intentionally letting that slip
because that’s not the point.
Otherwise:
A = requiring a feedback for sellers
B = requiring a feedback for the forum
You’re mixing A & B. Strawman 1.
C = working for BL
D = agreeing with BL
You’re mixing C & D. Strawman 2.
E = being a moderator
F = being infeudated to BL
You’re mixing E & F. Strawman 3.
I could go on, decomposing “being infeudated” with “being an employee” and “working
for” and “working with,” or with your conflating “BL does A” with “agreeing with
A”….
The real point is that, whatever my status, whatever some other rules for other
parts of the site, I don’t think feedback should be required to post on the forum.
|
being an Online Forum moderator is a Profession.
whether you are paid or not by the website that runs said Forum.
Moderating is Work.
you are moderating this Forum for BL.
you are voluntarily doing this work for BL.
regardless of if BL pays you, registers you as an employee, recognizes you with
a title, or allows you to control their forum.. you are working for this website.
you claimed there was a difference between "working for BL & agreeing with
BL"...
maybe you can detail this difference.
i understand the "not agreeing with everything BL" part, but i am interested
in your knowledge of the 'working for' aspect...? i mean , since you
claim you are not an employee nor do you work for BL.. i am curious how you would
have any sort of perspective on that attribute.

Same here, reporting spàm is quick and easy anyway and forum mods are pretty
quick once it is reported. And if the default was set to hide cancelled messages,
then they shouldn't be a problem. It's been so long I cannot remember
what the default is.
Mind you, concerning feedback, maybe all users should have to have positive feedback
before being able to post to forum, buy or sell.

be on (= hiding) by default.

I thought it might be the default, I know I have it set.
I really don't understand why people feel the need to respond to spam messages.
If they are reported, they disappear quite quickly if users opt for / keep the
default to hide cancelled messages. If they are responded to, the response often
remains even after someone else has reported it. So the spam quickly disappears
but the response keeping the same spam title remains. The responses remain visible
longer than the original spam.

|
OK, honestly how often is the Spam happening. I am not seeing it very often.
It is obviously spam so just ignore it. If it was coming in once an hour, then
it needs to be addressed. every 2 hours? yes it should be addressed. 1 a day,
it's annoying but not really impacting anyone.

once to twice a day about (or maybe per 12 hours as I'm not sure what each
cancelled post is from when I'm sleeping). most posts get deleted within
a few minutes and they usually get reported within 5 minuets if they aren't
deleted before then. its not anything crazy

One cannot be too focused on feedback. It is a resume that should be looked
at keenly to decide to hire someone to sell and send bricks to the buyer. I
buy a lot on eBay and the feedback is so important and it is much more detailed
than what is allowed here. Focused like a laser has saved me a lot of money
and frustration. I wish BL would have a system like eBay except for the part
where you cannot leave feedback for buyers except positive.

How's this for a silly and unrealistic requirement:
Require newly registered accounts to DM Sylvain_LS with a sample of their intended
forum post before they are allowed to post on the forums.
Sylvain's inbox would fill up quickly!
Gets off soapbox.
Since people seem to be randomly thinking up silly and unrealistic requirements,
we may as well try to get as many as we can in one thread.

can they be personal attacks if he doesn't know you have an issue with your
eye and just so happened to be using a common phrase like getting ones eyes checked?
|
Yes
But I've got my eye on you, Nubs my friend!

if new members have a question they can contact Bricklink directly via PM , otherwise
they can not post new feeds in the forum.
otherwise if members are going to spam the forum with gummie ads, they at least
have had to bought something 1st.
a simple 'Pay-To-Play' criteria
thoughts...?
|
Gummy spam is ultimately not very harmful.
|
i wold say 100% not 'harmful', but 80% annoying..
consider this everyone who reads this:
i just logged into the main Community Forum page . just now..
& out of the top 100 most recent posts. 9 are from brand new members with a Zero
feedback, & all 9 have been cancelled.
there is not a single legit Forum post out of the current most recent 100 posts
from a member with Zero feedback.

i will correct myself.
i missed Eddie2134's fatal error 1..
thank you Eddie2134.. for not spamming..

Also consider this:
* maybe 1% of BrickLink members read Forum - from time to time,
* maybe a few of percents of this 1% post there - occasionnaly - and mostly for
promoting Sales.
In short, there's a small public here.
1 SPAM per day won't change anything.
But 1 person ruled out not being allowed to post would be a important LOSS (relatively
to above).
Again, no.

where are you generating this "1 Spam per day" figure from....???
going back 24 hours i count 10 cancelled posts from Zero Feedback members..
Not 1...
& that's with 1 good eye,,,

+1 for the most part (if not entirely) we agree that it would be better if there
was no spam but we don't agree on the severity of the spam or on what possible
solutions could be.

| I must ask tho what so bad about the idea of if its a 0 feedback user who posts
a message the system checks the URLs that may be included and if they aren't
on a list of "approved" sites it then either prevents them from posting
their message or then lets them think they posted it but nothing actually happens.

|
| | Having spam bots run wild day in and day out doesn't help anyone, and it
creates more unnecessary work for the forum moderators
|
But they sleep all day long!
| When push comes to shove, you have to make a decision that will positively benefit
the majority
|
Uh? Which one?
| Rarely have I seen actual "I need help" posts from zero-feedback people
|
In fact, I've seen more of those than actual SPAMs.
Sure I'm not here "permanently", so they may already be cancelled
when I read.
| I think the repeat customers & sellers (the people who have been loyal to the
site & help keep it going) should be considered more than zero feedback users
when it comes to the forum specifically
|
Forum will die if no younger users come.
If they can be moderated (just as until now), I don't care about seeing some
SPAMs from time to time.
I prefer a guilty staying free than an innocent to rot in jail; newbies shouldn't
pay the price for the bots.
And I'm sure BrickLink DOES something, please be sure they didn't wait
for you to have ideas and implement the measures they've decided to be adequate.
