I have wanted chickens for over 10 years, I finally got two chicks last night.

They are Naked Neck breed, AKA Turken due to the myth that they are a cross between
a chicken and turkey, which is biologically impossible.

Gentle and docile, good egg layers and good meat producers. These girls will
not be eaten, but will be pets, bug and weed control, when they stop laying.

Discovered this morning how much chicken poop stinks! Oh well, I am on cloud
nine right now, so it is all good.

Keep an eye on their eyes, sometimes a chicken can go blind in one eye for reasons
we couldn't discover when we had chickens. It seems to happen more often
once they reach the adult stage. First signs of blindness such as this that I
noticed were a partially closed eye which looked swollen, with a pupil that was
much smaller than usual. If you see any eye condition in them, get them to a
vet as quickly as possible. Early treatment could save the eye.

Cheers ...

Many years ago we had chickens, a couple of turkeys, quite a few ducks and three
geese.

The turkeys were very stroppy.

One of the geese would sit on my lap if I sat outside, the others sat ether side
of me.

Always liked ducks myself.

The girls now have names. The buff/golden one is Vera the Velociraptor. The
black one is Aloe the Adorable.

I have been having so much fun learning about these amazing, smart, fun sized
modern dinosaurs.

They love grapes, nectarines and peach pits picked clean, mushrooms, and spread
their normal feed granules all over the place so they can snack where ever!

Aloe jumped into my hand today to get a grape quarter! I am amazed this happened
in less than 48 hours after they arrived.

Vera still is a bit skittish, but she will be there soon. She is definitely her
own chicken. I love a good challenge, and I bet she's going to give me one.

I knew chickens took dust baths, what I did not realize is how comical it is
to witness. Flopping around, flapping wings, kicking their feet while lying on
their backs, dirt flying everywhere. I'll try to get some video of it next
time I see them doing it.

First day in a long time I did not get an order on Monday, so I enjoyed time
with the chickens instead.

Play well everyone,
John

The chickens had to be re-homed today, they were both roosters. To live peacefully

They are going to a gentleman that had a huge bachelor flock and only harvests
them if they do not get along with everyone else.

I am so bummed right now! Who knew you could get so attached to a bird in just
a bit over 40 days?

Sad chicken noises,
John

Bummer. It's always sad letting pets go. Hopefully you are able to make peace
with your neighbors.

Reminds me of an article I read a while ago:
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/24/world/europe/france-countryside-noises-smells-law.html

This particular case is from France, but this kind of stuff happens all over.
New York City is not exactly a paradise, but neither is the countryside.
