Hi there. I have not shipped a purchase internationally before, but I received
a message asking if I would consider shipping a minifigure to Germany. This buyer
has a lot of good feedback, so I'm comfortable doing it as long as it's
not terribly complicated. I looked at FedEx, and the cost and amount of paperwork
seem pretty outrageous, so I'm hoping someone with experience could offer
some advice as far as carriers, pricing, things to avoid, etc.? Thanks so much!

germany is a confusing place to ship mostly due to their packaging law
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1335993
many sellers don't offer shipping to Germany due to it and I wouldn't
recommend shipping there unless you are comfortable with the possible issues.
there have been mixed reports of packages still going thru fine but its still
sketchy

Thanks for posting this. That link is super helpful, and I'm thinking the
hassle and risk aren't worth it.

Pirate Ship Simple Export Rate is the way to go in my opinion. You definitely
don't want to use FedEx or UPS.

For something as small as a single minifigure, I would recommend trying USPS.
International shipping starts at about $15. In addition the usual information,
you will also have to fill out the customs declaration. The HS Code for LEGO
bricks is 95030035 and the country of origin is the United States.

Shipping to Germany is bit more complicated than other countries due to their
packaging law that requires businesses to register and pay a fee in order to
ship stuff to Germany. For a single low-value order, you may find that it is
simply not worth it.

Thank you! This is excellent info. It truly doesn't seem it would be worth
the risk and headache, but I am curious how sellers tackle this if they don't
regularly ship there - registering a business just to ship to Germany every so
often feels like a lot of work for such little payoff. I wonder if buyers in
Germany realize how complicated it is and/or if they anticipate and accept they
will need to pay a premium to get these items from the US. I'm also really
curious about the apparent LEGO shortage they must have!

It does seem a bit odd, requiring individuals in foreign countries register and
pay a fee just to ship to Germany. But for those who ship there regularly, it
may be worth it.

The whole idea of the packaging act is to shift the cost of recycling packaging
materials from consumers to producers by using the money collected to support
recycling programs.

I'm not sure how this affects the average German consumer, but given 8 out
of the top 20 largest BrickLink stores are in Germany, I'm sure they've
no shortage of LEGO over there: https://www.bricklink.com/memberList.asp?v=3

USPS International Parcel via Pirateship.com $16.25

I haven't bothered to register with any shipping authorities. Seriously,
how is that supposed to work with small vendors? Germany, get a grip.

Good luck!

There ought to be a way for smaller vendors to form a co-op to comply with the
German packaging recycling regulations - if there were, then maybe this is something
that BL could facilitate.

Btw, Simple Export Rate for up to 8oz is $11.99 - still pretty high for a single
minifig but better than $16.25

I ship to Germany. I have not had any problems with any of my packages going
through. I am not registered in Germany. I do make sure that all my packaging
is recyclable. I have yet to include an IOSS code / number but I use eBay so
maybe there is a code imbedded into the tracking number on the shipping label.

If your customer is willing to pay the shipping costs and you use recyclable
material, I see no reason why you cannot ship to them. I use first class international
package in a box to ship overseas.
