How can I stop the Search Field on the main page from automatically filling in
with informaation?

I would advise using the Catalog Search always for everything.

  It only proposes possible completions below to me.  It doesn’t automatically
complete words.

More efficient, especially if you choose a section first (that is, hover over
the Market icon and choose “Part,” “Set,” or “Color Guide,” etc.).
