Hey everybody,

Just wondering what your biggest regrets were as a seller?

I can name two myself.....

Number 1.........

I remember being in a store here in Australia (you would call them a big box
store in US), and the set

Set No: 42056 Name: Porsche 911 GT3 RS
*
42056-1 (Inv) Porsche 911 GT3 RS
2704 Parts, 2016
Sets: Technic: Model: Race

was on super sale for $300 AUD. I asked about them and they said they had 8
i could buy if i really wanted too. I thought about it, thinking they could
have future value and said no. Now they are selling at the cheapest for $1000
AUD.

Oh well.

Number 2........

My other regret would be receiving the Yoda Lightsaber as a GWP with purchase.

Set No: 5006290 Name: Yoda's Lightsaber
*
5006290-1 (Inv) Yoda's Lightsaber
140 Parts, 2020
Sets: Star Wars: Promotional: Star Wars Episode 2

For some unknown reason I decided to part it out when i received it and now it
is selling for $300 AUD plus.

But i did do the inventory for the set so we are all a winner

So what was your biggest regret/stuff up/mistake........?????

I realize the big numbers are impressive BUT in 6-7 years it's not even quadrupled
in value - if you bought $300 worth of parts in 2017 and were able to resell
them at $375, then did the same with that money, you'd be selling the parts
six years later for $1100+

2017 - $300=$375
2018 - $375=$468.75
2019 - $468.75=$585.94
2020 - $585.94=$732.43
2021 - $732.43=$915.54
2022 - $915.54=$1,144.43

I sold two sealed and one opened, built and taken apart Cloud City, the original
one plus three complete sets of the minifigures. $150 for the sets, around 10
each for the minifigs.

That also explains while you were one of the firsts on BrickLink?

Nice you had this on the beginning

So what was your biggest regret/stuff up/mistake........?????

Years ago, around the time Bricklink started up, I was driving with my family
through a small out of the way town, and stopped by a store that had a little
of everything. In a corner they had a huge pile of old LEGO sets at crazy low
prices. Classic space, trains, technic and all the other sets I did not get as
a kid. I mediately realized that I could not get all of it into the car with
wife and kids in it, and as I was filling up several shopping carts, I briefly
thought about how they were going to get home, but dismissed the thought as uninteresting.

But alas, to my big regret, when I got to the counter to pay for the treasure,
I sadly…

…woke up.

But it is the only dream from 20+ years back that I still clearly remember

We did buy almost 2 complete Brick & Mortar shops which were closing around 2006/2007
maybe.
One of the best ever business we made, like Clould CitIES at 80%...

Now those toys shops are almost all closed around us, last time I checked anyway;
on line shops, Amazon and taxes killed them.

  Hey everybody,

Just wondering what your biggest regrets were as a seller?

I wasn’t a seller back then, not even on BrickLink yet, but it did trigger my
LEGO addiction back into my life.

It was around 2001, we were transitioning from our Dutch guilders into the euro.
I was in a store that had stacks of UCS X-wings, 40, maybe 50 for 75 guilders
a box.
Now, older Dutch people can quickly calculate how much euros that is and understand
what I now know.
But even at €75 they were a steal, so I bought one (1)…
I still sometimes wake up screaming in the middle of the night, NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Oh, the set was:

Set No: 7191 Name: X-wing Fighter - UCS
*
7191-1 (Inv) X-wing Fighter - UCS
1300 Parts, 1 Minifigure, 2000
Sets: Star Wars: Ultimate Collector Series: Star Wars Episode 4/5/6
I still have it.

Not buying larger quantities of 'winners' when they were clearanced or
cheap direct from LEGO, and then selling them too quick before they really rose
in price. So many examples of sets and parts.

Although if I hadn't had made quick flips then I probably wouldn't have
bought more.

Here is another more recent oops ...

although I made a decent profit on it and it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Mine would be going to a Meijer/Toys R Us and seeing early Harry Potter and LOTR/Hobbit
sets and not having the $ to buy them to resell for more later. Wasn't really
a seller back in the 2000s-2010s yet.

Visiting the local Lego store and seeing a stack of these on sale for £50 just
as I was leaving

Set No: 10019 Name: Rebel Blockade Runner - UCS
*
10019-1 (Inv) Rebel Blockade Runner - UCS
1746 Parts, 2001
Sets: Star Wars: Ultimate Collector Series: Star Wars Episode 4/5/6

I was new to BrickLink back then and didn’t initially realise they were worth
buying
I went back a few days later and asked if they had any left but they obviously
had sold out.

This is why I have over 2000 of

But they did come with a Bulk purchase that has more than paid for itself, but

  Hey everybody,

Just wondering what your biggest regrets were as a seller?

I can name two myself.....

Number 1.........

I remember being in a store here in Australia (you would call them a big box
store in US), and the set

Set No: 42056 Name: Porsche 911 GT3 RS
*
42056-1 (Inv) Porsche 911 GT3 RS
2704 Parts, 2016
Sets: Technic: Model: Race

was on super sale for $300 AUD. I asked about them and they said they had 8
i could buy if i really wanted too. I thought about it, thinking they could
have future value and said no. Now they are selling at the cheapest for $1000
AUD.

Oh well.

Number 2........

My other regret would be receiving the Yoda Lightsaber as a GWP with purchase.

Set No: 5006290 Name: Yoda's Lightsaber
*
5006290-1 (Inv) Yoda's Lightsaber
140 Parts, 2020
Sets: Star Wars: Promotional: Star Wars Episode 2

For some unknown reason I decided to part it out when i received it and now it
is selling for $300 AUD plus.

But i did do the inventory for the set so we are all a winner

So what was your biggest regret/stuff up/mistake........?????

Mine would be this new in the box

Set No: yodachron Name: Holocron Chamber - The Yoda Chronicles Promotional Set (Toy Fair 2013)
*
yodachron-1 (Inv) Holocron Chamber - The Yoda Chronicles Promotional Set (Toy Fair 2013)
391 Parts, 3 Minifigures, 2013
Sets: Star Wars: Star Wars Yoda Chronicles
as well as a prototype Yoda on the street cube

Not selling in earnest until a few years ago. I've been here since December
2003 and would only sell occasionally as I kept putting off the monumental task
of going through and listing what I had. I'm doing it now but it's slow-going.
Probably would have gotten better prices for some the 80s/90s sets if i didn't
wait so long.

Oh well.

When it comes to good investments its all relative to what you paid rather than
how high you can sell it for and so I wouldn't be overly concerned about
missing out on your Porches. The best investments are those that don’t require
too much upfront cost, don’t take up too much storage space and make the biggest
markups in the shortest time!

Those Porches required a $300 upfront cost for a $1000 sale which in Lego selling
terms is an okay 235% markup but how many years would that upfront money be tied
up in storage?

There is no doubt that this is still a far better markup than most other products
out there although not so much when it comes to investing in Lego products.

Even when I look at some of my own Lego set investments. I have several Helm’s
Deep in storage for 10 years I paid £50 for them in a sale and they are worth
about £375 today which is a 650% markup which I guess is good but when you consider
how long I’ve had in storage and how much space they take up compared with the
very small BARC speeder sets I purchased around the same time which only cost
me £12 and yet are also worth £375 making a much bigger 3000% markup!

However overall its generally not the sets that make the best investments, its
the parts which at a fraction of the upfront cost will often easily make a 200%
markup from day 1 and then a 2000-3000% markup in half the time it takes a set
to reach the same markup level

In the end what I'm saying is there is a lot better you could probably do
with investing that $300 even if that means buying parts here from another seller!

is cope with the fact that I could've traded them for a house if I had just
held onto them for 3 years longer

except housing prices for the past 3 years in Canada have been going up much
faster then even the most valuable lego set or figure it seems
