| Hi there. When selling a complete set that has been used, do buyers ever want
the set to be shipped already built? For example, I have the Lone Ranger Constitution
Rail Chase, which is currently assembled, but I’d like to sell it. Is it always
appropriate to disassemble, sort, and bag the parts?

generally, people expect it to be unassembled and as a seller when selling a
used set as complete you have to disassemble it to check to make sure its complete
otherwise you cant list it as complete since it might be missing parts . also
its good to disassembled it to check to quality of the pieces

Personally, I'd much rather the set be disassembled. 1) It's more fun
if I get to build it. 2) Far less danger of things breaking in post if the parts
are safely stored in bags.
As a seller, shipping a built set sounds like a nightmare to pack.

I agree with all the points mentioned, especially since I have the original instructions
for my sets. I ask because I once ordered a used set, and it arrived fully built.
The most shocking parts is that not a single piece fell off during shipping!
It was the Imperial Light cruiser, so I’m not sure what sort of sorcery the seller
used to get that thing 2,000 miles without so much as a loose brick. I eventually
disassembled and stored it, but it made me wonder if shipping built sets is a
thing, or if that was a one-off.

Posed a similar question maybe a month or two ago and several really good
points were made for disassembling the set. For starters it's really only
feasible to ship smaller completed sets like stuff from the speed champions series.
Shipping Rivendell, Hogwarts or Assembly Square would be an absolute nightmare
because by the time it gets to the buyer - it's going to be disassembled
anyway.
The two main reasons for me for selling disassembled is so that someone else
can enjoy the build but mainly so that you can verify all the parts are there.
If you hang on to your numbered bags, reuse those and heat seal them for an
added touch.

I just responded to someone else and shared that I ordered an Imperial Light
Cruiser, and was surprised when it arrived fully assembled, and not one single
parts fell off or came loose. Mind blown. I like the idea of resealing The original
bags. I always toss them, but that’s pretty brilliant. Thanks!

That is impressive. There's another thread from yesterday called "LEGO
Shop at home strikes again" and you can see the damage some of these boxes
sustained by just sloshing around inside the shipping box. If a box can receive
that much damage, imagine a completed set inside it (without interior packing).
The bags really impressed me. I've bought a few old used sets for my kids
and one came with everything randomly tossed in to multiple 1 gallon zip locks.
Some where the ziplocks were numbered, and another where they were in the resealed
bags.
The first one was frustrating because we had to sort 2000 pieces before we could
start. The later ones we opened the box and immediately got started - and even
though it was basically the same experience - I felt like we got a better value
with the one using original bags.
There is something in Consumer Psychology that explains this but I'm drawing
a complete blank. This is going to bug me though so I'm sure I'll dig
through my old text books tonight.

I purchased a used large building set a few years ago, and the seller didn't
tell me it was being shipped assembled. What a nightmare! There were all sorts
of pieces loose in the huge box, hidden among all the packing peanuts, and I
had no idea where to put them. I ended up disassembling the entire thing first,
and I ended up with a bunch of parts missing, but by that time it had been months
since the sale.
Now I know better, and if I see that a used set doesn't explicitly say it's
disassembled, that I need to ask the seller first.

Hold up... They didn't at least bag it? They just put the built set in
to a box and filled it with packing peanuts?

The shipping costs would be much more expensive to ship a set fully assembled.
It would also increase the chances of something breaking or getting damaged.
