| I had a customer purchase insurance for an $3.00 order. Why I don not know.
They paid $2.00 for the insurance but the the insurance ending up costing me
$2.65. Is there a setting that I need to change to raise the cost of insurance?
If not, something needs to be fixed on Bricklink side.

Hello,
As a seller, you are completely responsible for setting up your own shipping
methods and all related costs. BrickLink doesn't maintain any shared methods
and none of them are guaranteed to be accurate or updated. Those shared methods
are static and are not pulled down with any API.
You should go through every inch of your settings and verify that your methods
currently match the actual charges wherever you are printing your shipping labels.
Then keep a watch because USPS changes their rates usually twice a year.
Agreed that insurance for a $3 order is kind of silly.
Good luck,
Jen

| Insurance covers the seller, not the buyer. The seller is required to get the
order to the buyer. If PayPal was used, the buyer's protection is in effect
delivery insurance for their order.
Charging insurance on a $3 order seems like very poor customer service.
I personally would have contacted the buyer, explained that PayPal covers the
delivery insurance and refunded the $2 charge. Educating the buyer could help
turn them into a repeat BrickLink purchaser and they would get their Lego parts
a little bit cheaper.
When I first started selling, a big store suggested setting aside $0.25 from
each sale to cover lost packages. In my 12+ years selling on BrickLink and Ebay,
the $0.25 easily covered the 7 packages "lost". If you are worried about
lost packages, maybe set a personal limit of $100/$250+ where you as seller,
purchase insurance.

In this case, it sounds like it was the buyer who requested insurance, not the
seller. I agree that it's silly, but I wouldn't call it poor customer
service.

True!
I probably should have stressed the opportunity to inform the buyer on how insurance
works. The thought being that the buyer saves some $ and buys more Lego.

The buyer requested the insurance. I which I provided at a loss. It's the
loss that concerns me. I can't seem to find where in the settings I can
change it.

There is no "settings" for this; it's all in your Shipping Methods,
that you defined or imported.
Note: you should NOT import other people's shipping method without at least
controlling each and every line of it. Which is even worse, IMO, than creating
them yourself.

Don’t take a loss on purchasing insurance for something that small, just ‘self
insure’. Tracking is already included and so the only real risk you would have
is if the item arrived damaged. I’ve been selling on one forum or another
for over 20 years and USPS has only lost one tracked package (broken is a whole
other story) in all of that time and it was going to an APO. Occasionally,
something got ‘delivered’ to an apartment, but the recipient did not get it,
and most of the time it was eventually located. So if you let customers like
that pay at instant checkout it’s likely going to be extra profit for you.
Larger purchases send priority mail or through UPS which include insurance up
to a certain dollar value for free (UPS is higher…$300 I think).
Good luck!

I changed it to reflect USPS's rates.

| I'd have to disagree. It's poor customer service to be deceptive that
the buyer would be responsible for directly paying for or requesting insurance
(at least in the US). If a package arrives damaged or doesn't arrive at
all, it's completely on the seller and up to them to file for and receive
any compensation from their shipper. It has nothing to do with the buyer.
As a seller, I'd recommend that if you're planning to ship a hundred
or more orders, that you never pay for insurance. It's only offered because
it makes the shipping companies more money. If they're making money, you're
losing money on average.
