I recently ordered a couple brown classic smiley faces from a Bricklink seller
with around 10k feedback and a very good reputation. Out of the 8 heads sent,
3 arrived broken. I thought this was just a case of the parcel being squished
in transit, but on closer inspection, the heads don't look right. The texture
of the plastic feels off and the print looks thin. It almost looks like there
are little lines running through the heads.

First picture is the breaks in the 3 heads, second picture is a comparison between
the ones I ordered and one I had. The head on the body is official Lego since
I pulled it from a set. If I didn't have a direct comparison, I would have
probably overlooked the differences.

Is this a case of factory variation, brittle brown or just fake product?

Unfortunately, yes - reddish brown heads are known to break around the neck area,
I've also seen this happen to heads in other colours

  just fake product?

Highly doubt it, usually fakes target licensed stuff, there's not much money
to be made "faking" the generic smile heads

Something just feels very off about the pieces past the brittleness. Mold lines,
texture, color, print... all off. Left looks like every one I got, right is the
piece I already owned.

If it is Lego, I assume they're factory rejects or "decomposed" piece.
I also just assumed brittle brown was mostly an issue going into the late 2000s
to mid 2010s, didn't realize parts were having issues from 2006.

Just seems to be an odd combination of factors on this piece.

I believe these are real Lego. The reddish brown, dark blue, and dark red have
a tendency to be brittle. It is also common to see a difference in color between
pieces that are made in different factories. The mouth print being thinner can
also be due to a different factory from the one that your original head was printed
in.
