I have a buyer cancel a purchase because shipping is so expensive to Canada.
I'm fully with him, so much NAFTA. I used PirateShip and the cheapest was
still too high. ANyone knows of an alternative?

It looks like shipping rates are inflated to 'precisely' limit trade
... Conspiracy Theory ???

The high shipping is only half the problem. Toss in the extremely low threshold
($20) for import value before taxes duties and service charges are added and
it's amazing any Canadian would purchase outside of our borders.

I did have a seller ship a large envelope from New York for only $2.50, I never
asked how or what method they used but it arrived.

Yup and then with tax if they do it all normally after fees in some provinces
for that $20
Order
You end up paying
$20 (product)
$15 (shipping)
$10 (service fee for them finding out how much tax you owe)
$3 (up to 15% tax depending on province)
So a $20 purchase ends up costing almost $50 which makes it not feasible

That's real crazy. I lived in Toronto for some time and never thought it
was that bad. Yes, some prices were 'inflated' (compared to those south
of the border) but that was attributed to the exchange rate. One thing that used
to upset me was the tax on 'luxury food' ... wich includes all soft drinks.
A 2L bottle of Coke was 2.00 then becomes $2.30 after GST+PST ... Well, that
was close to 30 years ago. All of that was really 'annoying' especially
that I had moved from Boston, where there was no tax on Food+Clothing ...

Did NAFTA (or whatever it is called now) make things better/worse or is it
all due to Trudeau and the like? (Not being political, just referring to Politicians
by the guy at the helm).

Yah they tax pretty much anything that isn’t 99.99% pure bullion or non luxury
foods. Everything else is taxed a lot

Honestly couldn’t tell yah as it’s been this way my whole “working” life cause
he’s been in power for a long time (relatively) so hopefully a more experienced
member can shed some light on what it was like before

The 75 cents on the dollar exchange rate and exchange rate fees don't help
too. Buying anything online has become death by a million cuts.

Shipping rates are atrocious though. Just spend $30CAD to ship a 5 inch x 7 inch
x 2 inch box to Texas via expedited. Feel bad charging buyers that amount and
try to eat as much of it as possible reusing boxes / materials, taking a few
dollars off, etc when possible.

Yikes. If only you had a chit chats near you you could ship the same thing for
under $10 fully tracked with fast delivery
