Hiya Bricklink,

Since parts in this color tend to skew a bit higher in price, I wonder why? It
has been around for a while and a fair amount of parts are in dark orange. Do
people build a lot of MOCs with them? Is there a low supply? Is it something
to invest in at a PAB wall if I see it? Do any of you personally build with dark
orange? If so, what? Some good uses I thought might be sunsets landscapes, Mars
environments, rusty things, buildings or shading in general. Just curious.

Hm, never considered some of those thoughts. I think dark orange is a cool color,
I do use it in a couple mocs.

Ive been thinking about making a monument valley or grand canyon type MOC which
could use plenty of dark orange especially in the shadows. Glad there are other
option aside from just browns and tans for landscapes.

A more generic reply about demand for colors...

Most demanded ones are - due to Star Wars and 'modern models' -:
* Light Bluish Gray
* Dark Bluish Gray
* Black
* White

Then the other colors:
* for human or stone - Nougat, Oranges, Browns
* for nature, the greens
* for water, the trans-colors
* the others

Last, the ones which (generally) sell the less are the basic LEGO ones like:
* Blue, Red, Yellow, Green

This is very generic, I've no stats - just as I'm thinking at it as of
right now, but it represents what we sell the best in the above order.

Some are missing also, like Chrome-, Silver-, Pearls... somewhere in between.

There’s not only demand, there’s also offer.

What I mean is even if you want to make stats, in order to reflect “popularity”
(buyers’ intent), you’d need to somehow¹ take into account the available colours.

IOW, people are not buying Black 2780 because they prefer them in this colour

¹ Don’t ask me how, not with all the possibilities of LEGO parts.

Some are missing also, like Chrome-, Silver-, Pearls... somewhere in between.

Those are the other side of the coin: not many parts in these colours to buy.
(Black 2780 = no other colour to choose for this shape; Chrome- parts = not many
shapes to choose in this colour.)

Interesting. It does seem like there is a wider availability of types of parts
in dark orange over the last few years, I've noticed more bricks at least.
Man, I wish they'd make more chrome though!

Offer, yes it can play a bit on new items/colors combinations
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1382763

But for many there's no such offer because simply there's too much demand.

Right now, PLEASE try to find me a thousand of 4x6 Black Plates (and please send
me your source!)

And see, it's in my 'most demanded colors' post

I’m saying:

0.
You can’t use the demand for, or past sales of, Black 2780 to argue that “Black
is popular.”

1.
What you can do is, for each part, compare the demand for each colour (“people
buy more Black 2x4 bricks than White ones or Blue ones”).
And then, somehow, you combine the results of all the parts to finally say “Colour
C is more popular.”

2.
But the problem is all the parts aren’t available in all the colours.

2.a. Therefore Black 2780 isn’t “popular,” it’s the only colour for the shape.

2.b. Therefore combining the results is a nightmare.

3.
Is 4274 more popular in Blue or in LBG (or in the other colours)?
Do more people buy a bit more Blue because they prefer the colour or because
they are slightly cheaper and buyers actually mostly don’t care about the colour?
Should it really count to say Blue is not so less popular than LBG when you combine
with the results for the other parts?
But there’s people who buy the Blue ones because they prefer Blue to LBG!

TL;DR: If “popular” includes the buyer’s intent, then you can’t quantify it because
you can’t quantify or even know the intent.  If it doesn’t, then you’re saying
people prefer Black because they bought only Black Ford T.

This is like the Ford T an biased argument, of course I can't tell if a Technic
Pin Medium Azure would sell less or more in this case.

Yes/no - But I can tell you LBG is generally far more sold than say Trans-Glitter
Purple (if that exists/still exists).

Interesting example: I sell the LBG ones more than 2 times the Blue ones, even
if the LBG are (in my shop) say 50% more expensive.

So, in this example, they choose the Color (if available) and don't simply
pick the cheapest available.

Add to the complexity that people often buy using a Wanted-List, which brings:

* many want 100% the original parts and won't change a color even if it's
invisible but cheaper,

* many could and would change for cheaper, but this would be a teadious process
for sometimes a neglectable difference (ex: 0.01€ gain in between the two 4274
Colors above).

All in all, I guess LEGO produces the colors expected/demanded by the Community,
and in quantities corresponding.

There are metric tons of LBG because a lot of people build Star Wars and buildings
using this color; in short: it's one of the most demanded color, and one
of the most produced and available.

A zillion of exceptions exist, but this wasn't the idea of my original post

It's a bit of a chicken and egg situation. Black technic pins are common
because buyers want them. But buyers also want them because they are common.

Indeed, rare parts in rare colors often fetch a high price on BrickLink. But
for MOCs, I tend to content myself with what is available.

Wait! A chicken using the chicken-and-egg as an adjective? It gets the wheels
spinning some, don’t it Btw, unless you were previously an egg here, your profile
finally offers a solution to that conundrum... at least for you when on BrickLink

Which came first: the chicken, or the chicken-and-egg scenario? If you look at

wildchicken (no 13). So, I guess the chicken came first?

Would you mind sharing your data? Just browsing the catalog I don't get the
impression that dark orange is necessarily more expensive than other colors.

Would you mind sharing your data? Just browsing the catalog I don't get the
impression that dark orange is necessarily more expensive than other colors.

I don't really have any data on me, it's just a trend I noticed when
I part out at 6 mo avg sales.

So, I just parted this out: 26601 Wedge, Plate 2 x 2 Cut Corner

In almost every color it is between USD $0.08 and USD $0.29, usually around ~$0.15
but in dark orange it $0.55, I think medium blue a the only higher one I found.

It’s brand new in that color so will probably fall to 10 cents or less pretty
quickly. Doesn’t appear to be particularly high demand and already several
years worth of available inventory.

Well, at that price, there sure is not much demand, and considering it’s new,
you can’t really predict the future demand

You don’t have to do any predicting. The data is right there. 😀

There’s already a 3 month supply available at 25 cents which is half the current
6 month sold average. I’m sure as more people start parting these new sets out,
the price will continue to drop as sellers compete for the lowest price.

*snif* Nobody understands me *snif*

So, in baby¹ steps:

0. Yes, the part has been sold in the last 6 months.
1. But it’s new this year.
2. Buyers don’t necessarily yet know the part is available in this colour.
3. They don’t necessarily yet know they want the part in this colour.
4. The price is still high.
5. Many of those who know 2&3 are undoubtedly waiting for the price to go down
now that the part is in 3 sets and sellers are starting to get them.

So, again, the number of parts sold in the last 6 months, when the part started
to become available (no longer history), at a high price, and even if the price
has already halved,
doesn’t allow you to say “already several years worth of available inventory.”

It seems very obvious to me that this is not a valuable part in the near term.
If they stop putting it in sets, it might go back up long term, but I guess
everyone can have their own opinion.

Thing is, if you look at the price guide, the price of the part is actually going
up, not down. The Qty Avg Price for November 2022 is $0.45; for December thus
far it is $0.55. But the data is so small it's hard to extrapolate.

but I guess everyone can have their own opinion.

No, they can't!

It’s an interesting thing to look at and try to predict I guess. (All this I
looking at it from a US perspective).

I only buy/sell used, so don’t really have experience or any vested interest
with it, but my assumption would be that a very large seller with over 2,000,000
parts added 200 of these in November at 26 cents. That seller will dominate sales
in the US at least over the next two months driving the price down. Other sellers
without the same variety or quantity of parts will add new inventory at a lower
than 26 cent price point continuing to drop the price until it reaches its natural
resting spot around 16 cents (assuming it doesn’t appear in some cheaper sets)
by about April. In fact, I just checked and I think several sellers have already
listed decent quantities around 20 cents now.

Any takers on over/under 16 cents in the month of April? 😀

listed decent quantities around 20 cents now.

And interestingly, if you look at the actual listing, you'll see that the
seller actually listed them for $0.53 (which is close to the last six months
average sales price) and then put them on a 50% off sale for $0.265 which is
well below average. I can't tell you how long the sale will last, but perhaps
the seller is trying to stimulate demand for an otherwise slow-moving part. And
it looks like it's working, since already a couple of orders have been placed
at that price. So I think you are right, the price will go down.

Furthermore, there is a seller in Germany who has them listed for 0,3655€ with
a 30% reduction to 0,2559€, which puts them on part with the U.S. seller. So,
I think the price will go down in Europe as well.

Any takers on over/under 16 cents in the month of April? 😀

That counts as data, if only anecdotal.

Looking at the price guide for that particular part/color combination, it seems
that there is a sharp increase in the price of the part in October. But even
before the increase, it seems that demand for this particular part was relatively
low, so it may just be that the price guide data is volatile due to the historically
low demand for this particular part.

Just some food for thought.

Seems like Q4 has some fluctuations, which make sense. This being my first Q4
I wasn't sure what to expect. I assume the price will eventually fall back
if there is continuing low demand. That being aid, your post look delicious,
Yummers!

The parts they don't make any more in dark orange will be more rare. Here
is one example:

  Hiya Bricklink,

Since parts in this color tend to skew a bit higher in price, I wonder why? It
has been around for a while and a fair amount of parts are in dark orange. Do
people build a lot of MOCs with them? Is there a low supply? Is it something
to invest in at a PAB wall if I see it? Do any of you personally build with dark
orange? If so, what? Some good uses I thought might be sunsets landscapes, Mars
environments, rusty things, buildings or shading in general. Just curious.

Upstate_Brickz

My FAVORITE color. As an English actor quite often said "I don't know why?".

I think perhaps you do know and that it's not an actor’s quote, but that
the color reminds you of Skragle, whom you miss very much?
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1154156

Colors evoke feelings and often deeply held memories, almost as strongly as our
olfactory do. It's why we enjoy them so much

Actually, I fortunately do not have to miss him as he still with me. I apologize
if my forum message you referenced made it sound like he had died and he is my
mostest bestest dog friend. I think he is the best dog in the whole world but
I would imagine that a lot of other dog owners would dispute that claim.

He dose have some dark orange in his coloring.

It's a rich, appealing color. Some colors just have those attributes. Always
appreciated the LEGO color, myself.

We were at a LEGO store a few days ago, where I actually purchased a cup of PAB
(I hadn't done so in many years) simply because it was "Dark Orange" There
was another excitingly filling cups with the same color (4 different parts in
that color on this wall) He shared with me, that he was creating a Mars landscape.

Oooooo excellent, idea!

This happens to me to when I see an uncommon color at the wall. I fill a whole
cup up, last time I very excitedly filled up 2 cups with 3 different part in
neon yellow hahaha. NO CLUE what to make with it, Maybe the worlds ugliest house.
