I’m new to the site and am wondering how/why buyers commit to a purchase before
knowing the shipping fees? I purchased about $15 in Lego to be shipped within
Canada, but the invoice asked for $25 in shipping fees. So I requested to cancel,
but the seller didn’t respond & I see BrickLink’s policy is that the seller doesn’t
have to agree to cancelling if they don’t want to.
So I may have to pay $40 for just $15 in Lego? I’m not really blaming the seller,
I just don’t understand why buyers are asked by BrickLink to commit to a purchase
before knowing the full cost, including shipping!
I deal with contractors in my job every day and before they send an invoice they
send an Order Confirmation which includes any fees on top of the product, like
shipping. Once I reply with agreement, I’m fully committed and they send the
invoice for payment.

Try using sellers who have instant checkout instead so you can see your grand
total including shipping.

Yup, this is the solution.
Parcel rates have drastically increased. Partly due to the cost of diesel.
If your order can fit in an oversized envelope the shipping costs become quite
reasonable. It only works for parts that can ship in an envelope under 2 cm.
Your high shipping cost may actually only be due to one item. Most of my store
sales at the moment are oversized envelopes.

Not many sellers have that as an option in Canada which makes senses as in canada
as opposed to the USA Shipping rates vary drastically. In Canada I can ship a
parcel for under. $10 to one person and the exact same parcel would cost $20+
in the same province or $30+ to a different province depending on the final location
of the buyer

I wonder if there are circumstances under which it would be cheaper to ship to
the USA then ship from the USA to Canada! For example I could ship a 2lb package
to anywhere in Canada for $15.

I’ve wondered the same thing but then remember import costs. We pay import costs
and pretty much any package over like $50 and also get hit with a $10-$15 import
fee which for the most part would negate any savings unfortunatly

Also, if you are forced to complete a sale you are unhappy with there is the
option to leave negative feedback. Most sellers watch their feedback quite closely.

(You cannot threaten to leave negative feedback as that is considered extortion).

The easiest way is to email the seller or ask for a quote. Sometimes these options
are not available, but for the most part they are.

- some stores have instant check-out
- some store have enabled quote option (like my store)
This is how you can do it:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2437

- some stores give shipping costs in their terms. So check also the terms of
store.
- It is very helpful to learn about shipping costs. In Canada, small orders (like
up to 300gr) in which ALL parts are thinner than 1.7cm can be shipped as a mailer.
The shipping costs will then be very low. I believe there is a thick part in
your store (or you ordered from outside Canada. Then it can only be shipped as
Parcel which cost higher, specially if you order from outside your province)

I see a lightning bolt icon next to certain usernames and store names. What does
this mean?

Stores that enable both Instant Invoicing and Onsite Payment are considered Instant
Checkout Stores and will appear in search results throughout BrickLink with a
lightning bolt icon. You can find more stores that support Instant Checkout by
selecting the option to filter stores by Instant Checkout support on the Wanted
List Buy page, on all Catalog item pages, and on the Find Stores page.

I'm sorry the seller wouldn't let you cancel. I think it is a kindness
for new buyers to agree to this in these kind of circumstances. In the seller's
defense, if they agree to cancel, they have to rely entirely on your goodwill
not to leave negative feedback.

However, my understanding is that shipping packages above a certain thickness
in Canada is fairly expensive. I think you are going to find that that cost for
shipping was accurate.

As a buyer, you should always read through a store's Terms page as that is
where the costs of shipping are likely to be explained. What information did
this shop provide for you?

In the future, read the terms first, request a quote if you are uncertain, and
stick to Instant Checkout stores if you don't want to do either of those.

Good luck,
Jen

There is one workaround, but I don't know how practical it is. Buyer leaves
feedback for the seller. After 30 days the buyer's feedback is locked in
and cannot be changed. Seller can then cancel the order without worrying about
a neg.

The risk should be shouldered by the party asking for the favor (the buyer in
this case). Do you have another solution to offer?

The potential buyer "asks" for the total cost. The items are reserved for the
buyer. The seller makes an offer. The buyer now has 3 days to reject or accept
the offer. With the payment, the offer is accepted and everything goes its usual
course. However, if he rejects the offer, the items are immediately available
for sale again. In this case, however, there is also no feedback from both sides.

I think you've just reinvented the "Request a Quote" feature.

Items are not reserved by a Quote.  Someone can buy them and, pfftt, no more
quote.

No! For one thing, as Silvain already noted, the items are reserved. For another,
many stores do not offer this request. It should be mandatory.

Oops, I missed that part.

Though I see how this could cause trouble for sellers, with buyers tying up inventory
for three days only to reject (or fail to accept) the offer.

It's a great idea, but there's a number of solutions already in place,
with different benefits and drawbacks for the buyer and seller involved (e.g.,
buyer pays for order and leaves seller negative feedback more than thirty days
after the seller has left the buyer feedback so the seller can't retaliate).

I do agree that BrickLink could be more friendly to buyers, though. I know of
few ecommerce websites that allow sellers to increase the price of an order after
the buyer has agreed to pay.

Here in the EU, all commercial sellers must give buyers a 14-day right of withdrawal
and without giving any reason! Even if the orders are already paid. Exceptions
are only peronalized or specially made items.

You've been on BL here about as long as I have, and you know none of what
you proposed will ever happen.

Any solutions within the limitations of the current system?

I'm sorry the seller wouldn't let you cancel. I think it is a kindness
for new buyers to agree to this in these kind of circumstances. In the seller's
defense, if they agree to cancel, they have to rely entirely on your goodwill
not to leave negative feedback.

There is one workaround, but I don't know how practical it is. Buyer leaves
feedback for the seller. After 30 days the buyer's feedback is locked in
and cannot be changed. Seller can then cancel the order without worrying about
a neg.

And then, the buyer get a negativ feedback?

It is not the limits of BL that are authoritative, but the legal provisions.
If changes are apparently necessary, why not go in the right direction?
By the way, my proposal is just as within the limits of BL as any other change.

I don't know what the laws are for Ontario, but in some jurisdictions buyers
are not required to pay unless they know what the final total will be before
checking out. So, in other words, BrickLink is essentially lying to you when
they say that you are "obligated to pay" for items without knowing what the total
cost will be. Furthermore, BrickLink does allow buyers to cancel orders when
the shipping cost is higher than what is stated in the seller's own terms.
However, many sellers choose to retaliate with neutral and/or negative feedback
in this situation, since cancelled orders cost them time. My advice is to avoid
sellers that do not offer instant checkout or at the very least state their expected
shipping costs somewhere in their store terms.

Hope that helps.
