I know a guy who brick linked the millennium falcon all black. It was quite impressive
and left a huge impression on my 13 year old self. Has anyone here attempted
this on the Death Star II? Most of the pieces are basic, and honestly I don't
want to spend 1,500 for it. So I am thinking I may have this as a project if
it is possible.

I did it 10 years ago and it was a thoroughly enjoyable project:

You may need to substitute a few of the colours/parts but it should be relatively
easy to do still. However, please note that it's exceptionally delicate/fragile
(especially the exposed 'internal' section!) so you'll need to handle
it with care!

Dually noted! I am happy to see that others have pulled it off. I definitely
see myself doing this in the near future!

I did a couple of years ago. The only parts I didn't get were (and still
are) stupidly expensive - Tan Hinge Brick 1 x 2 (30364). You need 32. The cheapest
at that time were over £3.50 each (and they would have had to be obtained from
multiple sellers as none had 32 or large bundles). Just had a quick peek and
the only seller with 32+ now charges $10.58 per part! Eek!

I made do with another colour (LBG?) which were pennies, and you can't even
tell as they are for the interior.

It doesn't look like the plaque sticker is available now though - although
you can buy cheap third part stickers.

It's proudly on display next to my UCS Death Star 1 (75159).

It was a challenge and I loved it

I have bricklinked the Death Star II

To keep the costs at a minimum I would recommend replacing the following molds:
2555 → 15712
44375a → 44375b
44301 → 44301b
4085c → 4085d
2413 → 14181
3794a → 15573

Important colour changes:
32555 in red → black
30364 in tan → black/DBG
3937 in tan → DBG

Four of these is visible and is not inside the "core" of the death star, but
there are not a big difference between black and pearl dark gray in my opinion:
32278 in pearl dark gray → black

A few 6558 (4-8) should be black, but the others can be replaced in the blue
colour
6558 in black → blue

I had to buy a third party replica sticker, because there are were no stickers
sold at the time.
