I suppose the recent addition of the My Collection feature makes a bit more sense
now... at least from the company's perspective.

Cool. Whenever I see this kind of stuff, I remind myself that they will mine
the data info to possibly sell.

I see it less likely from TLC. They will probably use it more in house to produce
future products.

I always like reward points!!

Does this mean we will get reward points for registering sets on Bricklink? Or
will Bricklink claim these point and keep them?

Presumably this will be a one off reward. Otherwise if you get more points for
having more sets, I have them all.

I wonder what the point of collecting the data is - maybe to try to work out
how much people are buying from lego online and instore (via their vip account)
vs purchasing elsewhere, to see if they can increase the former and decrease
the later?

I don't think the data sample will be that significant. How many people will
(correctly) list their collection on Bricklink as a percentage of collected sets
on the planet? Any guesses, 0.001% perhaps?

The OP had a banner about registering collections on lego.com not just bricklink.
I imagine that significantly more people will use that and hence lego can collect
data on what people are buying direct from them vs from other retail stores.

"My Collection" won't be a lot of help in this effort. It will mostly be
filled up with things that aren't available in stores. And if a lot of people
have a 10-year-old minifig in their collection, does that mean they are super
popular and you should make another or does it mean the market is satisfied and
hold off? The answer, I think, is that it won't be worthwhile to pour over
MyCollection data. They have much better market research tools.

When you collect such data, you don't need to use the information entered.
LEGO can make it look like it is a useful tool for customers and that increases
engagement. They then give the data that LEGO wants from them. Just because someone
can log a set from 10 years ago doesn't mean LEGO necessarily want or analyze
that part of the data. But if you could only log current sets, it would not be
such a useful tool and people would not engage with it.

The useful data to analyze would be for current sets. Assuming most people would
add a current set at about the same time as they buy it, then they could monitor,
for example, when people buy the sets and they could tie that to whether or not
it was purchased via LEGO or elsewhere (since they know what everyone that uses
a VIP account has bought from them). So they could analyze whether people that
buy a D2C for a theme also buy the regular retail sets from the same theme via
LEGO, or via other retailers. They could analyze whether they buy D2Cs before
other sets or after. This could help them make decision about release dates for
D2Cs, and whether shifting them helps increase sales of regular retail sets via
their own site. They could analyze whether someone only buys on lego.com when
there is a GWP but and similar sets at other stores when there is no GWP, or
whether they only purchase when there is a GWP and don't buy elsewhere.

Wrapping up that sort of data collection and analysis tool in a customer friendly
tool means that customers are much more likely to give the data, and also in
an honest way, than if they did a survey because they may not even be aware that
the data is being collected. They are just using the official LEGO collection
logging tool, which is a benefit to them.

It is similar to that pilot scheme they are doing, offering VIP points (at a
rather low rate) for purchases made through Target in the US if you uploaded
the receipt. That looks like a nice thing to do for customers, rewarding them
with VIP points whether they bought LEGO products through their own site or via
a large chain. But of course they are doing it to get their hands on similar
data - linking what you are purchasing in Target and when, and have this data
alongside your purchase data at lego.com.

If you can get the customer to hand over that data, once they get used to logging
their collection at lego.com, then they don't even need to pay for the data
via a low rate of VIP points. All loyalty schemes exist to examine purchase data
from the company itself, this is just a clever extension to get the data when
customers purchase their products from other retailers too.

First, what is customers advantage of that? E.g. from buyers view. They us BL
to buy stuff and search for items, I would guess, that 90% of them [ don’t care ]
about this feature and wont use it.
Second, I would guess, that 80% of normal LEGO consumers even don't use Bricklink.
LEGO will just not reach a big, meaningful market overview with this feature.
Is there any official statement of LEGO or BL about this feature release?

Take a look at the first post in the thread. It is a banner asking would you
take VIP points to enter your collection data on lego.com.

That is what I was discussing.

Yes, the image was from an email I received from LEGO yesterday. Surely I'm
not the only one who received it. When I saw that they were going to offer a
way to register owned sets on lego.com, I knew it wasn't just a coincidence
that Bricklink had recently implemented such a feature.

I got a similar one but mine asked if I would like free standard delivery “on
