Just received the BMNL October 2022.

There appears to be an error in Tip #1 ("how do I protect myself from fraud as
a seller"). It says:

Enable seller protection in your store settings. To do that go to My Store
Settings Management Seller protection. Once you’ve ticked that box, new buyers
(less than 100 days on the site or a feedback score of 5) won’t be able to place
an order with you.

I sure hope it is still just that new buyers are limited to instant check-out,
and NOT barred completely.

Niek.

That caught my eye as well. If the newsletter was correct (concerning the 100
days) then checking that box indicates that any new arrivals during the holiday
shopping season will be prevented from placing an order (with any seller who
has selected that option). Could someone from BL please sanity check my interpretation
and clarify ?

It clearly states "Show only Instant Checkout methods to new buyers" What gives
you pause with this, Niek? Are you picking-up or experienced something further
that might indicate otherwise?

This is an exact quote from the newsletter - again, it says under the section
"Tip #1: How do I protect myself from fraud as a seller?":

Enable seller protection in your store settings. To do that go to My Store Settings Management Seller protection. Once you’ve ticked that box, new buyers (less than 100 days on the site or a feedback score of 5) won’t be able to place an order with you.

The text is pretty clear here. It should have said that, when the setting is
enabled, these new buyers "... will only be able to pick instant checkout." Instead,
the newsletter says that new buyers "... won't be able to place an order
with you." (Not that we have enabled that option.)

Unless you have received a different-worded newsletter?

Niek.

You referring to this section?

Yup (thank you for posting a pic - can't do that ATM). Even with the box
ticked, new buyers will still be able to place an order provided the shop offers
instant checkout. Saying they will be blocked all together is not how it works
(hopefully).

What I sincerely do not understand is HOW this protects me (or any of us), as
sellers, from fraud. Do people at 101 days or 6 different legitimate (verses
illegitimate) sellers magically not defraud people? (Answer, yes they do, and
now they will know to only start to do it after 100 days or 5 feedback!)

I've said it before (with the counterfeit email fiasco), and I will probably
say it again...

"Bricklink/Lego needs to get a thinking PR person on staff promptly."

With a bit more than 2500 sales, I have had zero fraud from new users (or seasoned
users for that matter!) Sure, I have had the occasional NPB, but that has been
mostly mitigated by my implementing IC.

The second suggestion just sounds like it has potential to be abused and bring
out the pitchforks in the forum. I do not recall any post about "User x is a
scammer" (I could just not be remembering them, but that is my point, they are
unremarkable. Thus, IMO, useless.)

I do recall multiple multi-page threads recently about sellers who defraud their
customers and it taking multiple business days for BL admin to step in.

The third option is a joke with the self-admitted overwhelmed helpless desk.
I feel like by the time they respond, the scammer will have done plenty of damage
to make it worth their while.

If I am wrong, I will be the first to admit it, but I feel the suggestions proffered
are useless.

IMO, have good operational security, trust your gut, and follow payment provider
guidelines and you should be just fine.

Imagine...

LEGO enthusiast is browsing online and finds the catalog. Browses some more and
sees lots of parts available. Decides to create an account to restore some incomplete
childhood sets.

If many sellers use this new feature, the potential buyer is in for a sad surprise.
After creating the account, suddenly most of the parts he found in the price
guide are not available to him. What do we think that is going to happen? Wait
100 days to order? Or, having decided to complete those sets, Google again and
buy somewhere else?

Also in the newsletter, affecting buyers and sellers:

"Platform Architecture Redesign
We’ve worked with an external consulting firm and received incredibly valuable
input. We’re preparing next steps."

I'm sad that my first response was "I wonder which features will be broken
because of lack of understanding this time". I'd love to be wrong about this
though.

I read this as "the marketplace user group we setup wanted us to do things that
are actually hard work and would be beneficial to the marketplace, so we choose
to ignore them and pay someone to tell us what we want to hear."
