I am sorting through minifigures from the 1990's - early 2000's.
I am finding that there are a many of figures with lines on the sides between
under arm and bottom of torso or part way down. Are these technically cracks
or stress marks? Is there a side seem on torsos of this age?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Almost certainly cracks. Take a cheap one and flex it, you will see it open.

You should mention it if selling them. Buyer would not get happy otherwise.

Are parts of this age more brittle?

That can either be a crack or a mold line.

Torsos crack on the side partly because that's where the plastic meets itself
in the mold and binds together. Looking at the bottom of the torso should show
if it has cracked through the plastic, or is simply a manufacturing blemish.

Most of the lines do not go all of the way through so I had been wondering if
they had to be cracks.

As far as I know arms and legs have seams but torsos do not - they are molded
as a single piece

What do you mean by not all the way through? Do you mean they are not all the
way from waist to armpit, or not all the way through to the inside of the torso?
If the second, it might just be that you cannot see the crack on the inside.

I've had some that crack from the waist upwards, but not all the way to the
arm pit, and lso some where the armpit cracks downwards but not all the way to
the waist. My theory here is that the first are caused by bending the legs inside
the torso or too much attaching and detaching of the legs without perfect alignment
and the second are caused by detaching and attaching arms too many times.

I have been able to glue some cracked ones for personal use. I remove the arms
and open the crack up by using a small metal bar inside the torso to push the
sides apart, then apply a dot of superglue into the crack with a pin head, then
let the torso crack close again. It gives pretty good results. You can still
tell they have cracked before, but at least arms and legs stay attached, and
you can partly cover the crack by posing the arm or with a cape.

Insetting legs sideways (sideways not sideways) will often be a easy way to see
if it’s cracked or just a mold line
