Hello fellow sellers!

Would anyone mind sharing how they sort their Legos and overall organizational
system? I took my shop over from my brother who passed away, and while he was
very organized in his own right, my brain works a bit differently and it's
been VERY time consuming pulling pieces that are not where I would think they
are.

Do you all put the part numbers on your bins or a description of what is in the
box? I am thinking of adding the exact BL description along with the part number,
while that too will take a lot of my time, it may be best in the long run as
I am barely turning a profit with how time consuming this is...especially having
to wrangle an almost one year old as I am a stay at home mom.

Any tips would be much appreciated!

**Also, for all the color variations, I was thinking of pulling an actual Lego
plate in every color I have to put on a poster board. The tans, grays, and greens
are overwhelming, and I fear pulling the wrong color.

Thanks all!!

Sarah

There are two main ways of inventory storing, whether LEGO or anything else.
You can either out numbers of names of parts in each box on the box, or label
locations such as box 1, box 2, or Row1 Box1, Row1 Box2, or whatever and put
the location on the remarks box.The first would work for small inventories or
if you keep everything in numerical or some obvious order, the latter as you
get more inventory.

The downside of the first is if you expand you would have to shift lots of inventory
to get the new stuff in, like if a library gets lots of new books by an author
beginning with C, all the Ds, Es, etc to keep alphabetical order unless they
already built in space for expansion.

Here is a thread with info on what some of us are doing for color boards. A picture

As for organizing the Lego . . .

Let us know when you come up with the right solution. I'm on my 3rd major
and 7th minor iteration. All based on comments post here.

I'm sure some of the more experienced members can give some ideas that have
helped them.

Wow, that is the best color chartI have ever seen. How did you print the names
with
The color as a background ?

I used the Blue Dot method. (for Nubs_Select & 1001Bricks)

Actually . . .

There are several references to the RGB or HEX values for the Lego colors. When
I used values from the reference charts, I wasn't getting the expected colors
when printed.

I have a Colormunki spectrophotometer for doing color matching, along with monitor
and printer calibration for my embroidery work.

Used the Colormunki Photo to capture the HEX values for Lego parts I thought
best represented each color. (Compared to the color reference charts, my HEX
values are a bit different)

After creating a grid in excel, I colored the background of each cell, then printed
and put together my board.

We just label our draws currently it runs from 1 thru 10k numbers that includes
stackons shoeboxes and other sizes to accommodate the parts. Just depends on
your space and dedication.

I think I am in the minority whereby I tend to sort by part type, and then by
colour within part type when the inventory expands. I am at around 53K pieces
at the moment doing it this way, and probably have to do a 1-2 hour shuffle around
every 5-10k parts. I know a lot (nearly all the Youtubers) have numbered drawers
where they will add inventory into empty spaces (usually stack ons with larger
boxes for larger parts) for each set/set of sets that they part out (or bulk
that they add) and then write in the remarks what number drawer the item is in.

My brain just doesn't seem to work that way, and space/cost wise it makes
sense for me to have larger 'bins' where the lots are consolidated rather
than the same part potentially spread around. I know that some (maybe most?)
will look to consolidate into existing drawers where they can with the stack
on system, but generally they are small stack on drawers.

Believe it or not I don't actually have my drawers labelled at all as the
order makes good sense to me - i.e. 2x4 plate, followed by 2x3 plate, followed
by 2x4 plate etc. and it me and at the moment my drawers are only spread over
about 8 foot against one wall. This does save me having to enter/check the remarks
for the location. It may not be sustainable long term, but I think I will be
OK until at least 100K parts, then we will see.

Although it's not the way I do it you could check Pop's Block Shop, Just
a Brick in the Bucket, BrickTsar, Unsorted Brick or Brick Arena (He's just
actually done a video on this while he integrates a store he bought), Montana
Used Bricks on Youtube, and I'm sure many others. I think my storage is in
line with Bricksie who is a builder rather than a seller (mostly) - but hey,
if a builder can find it, so can a seller, right? And I'm definitely both
- or at least try to be, time allowing!

Hope this helps!

(P.S. If anyone I mentioned above happens to read this - great work guys and
thanks for all the inspiration and content!)

Cheers
Joe
