Rational numbers have a definite number of digits. You just need to choose the
correct base. E.g. 1/7 is written 0.1 in base 7.
Irrational numbers have an indefinite number of digits in all bases.
What’s funny is that most numbers are transcendant¹… but when asked for an example,
it’s π or e that come… and not many others
¹ Rational numbers are countable, algebric numbers (√2…) are countable, but ℝ
is not countable, therefore most of the numbers in ℝ are irrational and non-algebric,
so they are transcendant.

A rational number is defined as any number that can be expressed as a ratio of
two integers. So pi, not being the ratio of two integers (proof is somewhere),
is not rational, independent of the base used to write it.
You could, however, define a base-pi, in which case pi would have a finite representation:
1. Then numbers like ten would have an that have an infinite base-pi representation
as a sum of powers of pi: 100.01022122221…

Rather complicated proofs here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proof_that_π_is_irrational
| is not rational, independent of the base used to write it.
|
This is commonly said and presented as ‘proof’: “π can’t be written as a decimal
number, its digits never end and never repeat, therefore it’s irrational.”
This is not a proof because ‘its digits never end and never repeat’ is not proven…
or it’s ‘proven’ elsewhere by saying that π is irrational (circular logic).
It actually stems from a property/theorem: irrational numbers can’t be written
with a finite number of digits in any integer base.
You need to either prove one (is irrational) or the other (can’t be written…)
to be able to say the other one.
And I think that where John’s question comes from: no one explained to him correctly
what irrational means, or confused the ‘irrational = its digits never end
and never repeat’ property with the definition.
And apparently that prof didn’t explain either. She just made a face.
Either that prof didn’t know the answer or she thought it was obvious. The latter
means she didn’t understand it.
Otherwise she would have answered like wildchicken13 did.
IOW: When someone asks you a question you think is stupid, it’s not because they
are stupid but because they AND you are missing something.

You see, pi is defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.
Let c be the circumference, and d be the diameter. Then π = c ÷ d.
The area of a circle, on the other hand, is pi times the square of the radius.
So, if A is the area, and r is the radius, then A = πr².
It is readily observed that the diameter of a circle is twice the radius. Thus,
d=2r.
We then find that π = c ÷ (2r), or, equivalently, π = (1/2)cr. Denote this result
by (1).
Now, you see, because the negative of a negative is a positive, (-1/2)² = (1/2)²
Taking the square root of both sides, we have -1/2 = 1/2
Adding 1/2 to each side, we have 1 = 0
Divide both sides of the above equation by two. This yields 1/2 = 0. Denote this
result by (2).
Substituting (2) into (1), we find that π = 0.
Now, zero has many representations. Zero can be written as 0, 0.0, 0.00, etc.
Thus, pi cannot be written uniquely as a decimal number, and therefore has no
final digit.
The question is absurd.

Indeed, Sylvain has pointed out a fatal flaw in the proof. Let's try a different
approach.
Perhaps if we can sum all of the digits of pi, we can then subtract from this
sum all digits but the last one, to obtain the value of the final digit.
It is known that the digits of pi contain within them all positive integers.
Thus, the sum of the digits of pi, is merely the sum of all positive integers.
Conveniently, Ramanujan (1920) proved that the sum of all positive integers is
exactly -1/12.
Furthermore, it just so happens the when the last digit of pi is removed, the
remaining digits also contain within them all positive integers. So, they sum
to -1/12 as well.
Thus, the difference is -1/12 - (-1/12) = -1/12 + 1/12 = 0.
Therefore, the last digit of pi is zero.

It's not so far-fetched.
As I understand it, if the British monarch fails to produce a living heir to
the throne, the rules of succession move up the family tree until a living heir
is found.
But because all humans share a common ancestor (possibly not all that long ago),
we are all, technically speaking, part of the British royal family.
And since Nubs_Select is Canadian with Dutch ancestry—two countries that have
strong connections to Great Britain—I'd reckon you'd only need to murder
a few tens of millions of people in order to put him on the throne.
Now, as far as the queen part, in this day and age, you can be whatever gender
you want, so that is not a problem.

You mean, this was when people of the lowest condition (the majority) every year
worked more and more and have more taxes to pay and see prices always increase,
while a minority of ultra rich people get healthier and wealthier and would distribute
the power to their successors, family and friends?
Fortunately it's not the case here!!!

To be honest, being the British monarch seems like a fun job. Few real responsibilities
since most administrative stuff is handled by Parliament now, travel the world
going on publicity tours, raise money for some charitable cause, grant civilian
and military awards, have your face on other country's money… Maybe France
should have kept their monarch around for show? I think Japan still technically
has an emperor…
You could always try running for public office, seems you have sponsored some
musical artists, now you just need to sponsor some politicians.

The French people of the time tried, very hard. But the idiot(s) conspired with
enemies and tried to flee.
And they tried again from 1804 to 1814/15. (Napoléon)

It’s not EU, it’s the Schengen (treaty) Area: the countries between which there’s
no borders any more.
Once you’re in one of those countries, you can go to the others without going
through customs (and without a passport).
Switzerland, Iceland, and Norway are in Schengen but are not in EU.
Ireland is in EU but not in Schengen by exception.
And the countries in yellow, Romania, Bulgaria, Cyprus & Croatia, are in EU and
not yet in Schengen but are working on it.

But your demonstration above is interesting - as all in all, you can mathematically
prove anything, like that Nubs_Select is the Queen of England
|

In a more serious vein I often think that people take Lego too seriously. I
had one of the best collections in the world (buy, never sell.) It provided
me with untold hours of fun and enjoyment and I was a very serious collector.
But there were so many more things in my life than Lego. Was it important?
Definitely. But when you think about the struggles so many people go through
and problems that confront people, Lego is insignificant. And so is the forum.
It is just fun. Years ago I read a book by Richard Feynman and he said his
mother taught him the most important thing in life is compassion and humor.
I have a hard time being serious about almost everything. My country, children,
race relations, and cats are about it.
So if people want to joke around on the forum, let it be. If you are a curmudgeon,
ignore it. There is a function that lets you do that. But leave others alone
in their child like behavior.

Yeah, it is funny. But you'll learn to overlook such here, where so many
(unlike us) are using a non-native language. It can't be easy. In fact, it
often times impresses the hell out of me.

I don't think it'd work the same for floats (IEEE 754), I should check,
but I won't as of right now

Don't most computers have pi stored somewhere in some floating-point representation?
So, you just look at the last digit of that, and there's your answer.
