| Hey guys
I just have a little question regarding how the process usually works. Don't
wanna put any work on admins to explain to much, but maybe someone has the time
to explain it and also let me know if or how people actually could help.
Personaly, i'm collecting starwars. I have about 700 Minifigs so far and
specially the new ones i buy all the time. So when they are released, i get that
it takes couple days or weeks for it to be inventoried correctly. But who decides
on what minifig is a variant, what minifig is new, what minifig gets what number
etc?
What's the process behind the whole new set? Is there a group on the staff
team that does the images and checks the set and then there is for each new set
/ minifig a discussion until its approved and therefore released within the catalogue?
My question results because of small "figures" that i have, but that are not
part of the catalogue. There are droids made out of 10 or so parts that are
listed as minifigure, but as example all the Star Wars Porg-Variants are not.
Why is that, is that something the community can challenge and who makes the
decision in the end? Based on the numbers i think some figures have been added
later in the process (like one-part sebublba sw0980 even though released in 1999)
but how do you get to this?
It's not like i have to have those as a minifigure as i have them collected
already. But its just to understand the Bricklink process a bit better.
Thanks for anyone that takes the time to answer

We define a minifig as how it is first shown to be built in the instructions.
This is not always an exact science. So, if a minifig has all the same parts
and prints as an existing catalog entry, but in this particular set, it is built
with a jetpack or a neck bracket, then it gets a new entry.
The catalog admins have the final say on minifigs. (This incluedes Catalog Administrators
and Catalog Associates.)
Minifigs are numbered sequentially. Sometimes a number gets skipped and the admins
fill it back in with a newer minifig.

Here again, what defines a minifig is not an exact science. The admins base their
decisions on our catalog rules, precedent, and community input. Keep in mind
that the catalog is built over decades, with different people in admins positions,
and an ever-evolving product from LEGO.
Here is my understanding:
Droids got into the minifig lists early so they stayed there. Other brick-built
figures followed only recently.
One part figures used to be classified only as parts. Someone else might remember
the history of this.
Named characters have a better chance of ending up minifigs than not. It's
a bit tricky to define what animals are animals (Porg is a generic term for a
species) and what are walking-talking-characters more like minifigs (Rocket is
a raccoon, but it is definitely an individual character.) Considerations are
given to this and also what type of parts are included in the figure.
Please keep in mind that these are all just my recollections and opinions and
not an official BL answer!
