I usually end up tossing the last couple hundred tiny pieces from a bulk lot
in the trash after a good look through because as anyone who's bought used
knows, the end can get a bit dirty...

I was just about to get rid of my latest remnants when I spotted one of these
beauties:

Part No: 4502a Name: Minifigure, Plume Feather Small
*
4502a Minifigure, Plume Feather Small
Parts: Minifigure, Headgear Accessory {Black}

Almost tossed $30 in the trash and I'm sure I've done it before and will
do it again... guess that's why these are so pricey.

I never throw anything away before checking every single piece, I’ve had numerous
finds like that in the bottom of lots.

This is probably a good part of the reason that some of these parts can get so
valuable. The small pieces that don't look like typical Lego often get thrown
away or lost making them much rarer.

Check everything. If it's a $0.10 piece that's dirty, it might not be
worth your time to clean it, but if you find something valuable it will definitely
be worth the effort to clean it.

Those little parts can also get stuck in any 2x* bricks (a few years ago, I found
a few feathers stuck in the bottom of a 2x6 brick)... so it's always good
to check everywhere in used lots for those buggers...

True. I’m sure I’ve missed a few that way as well.

That's why I process what's left in the bottom of the box through a strainer
in the kitchen sink! Because the bottom of the box is indeed so gross.

Strainer is a pretty good idea although since I don’t really sell small parts
(unless valuable), I think just looking through carefully is probably ok. I do
hate to throw out perfectly good LEGO though…

Sort of if you try to buy the feather buy itself, but you can apparently buy
the figs that the dark tan variety comes with in brand new condition for less
than the black feather.

The bottom of the bins is where you find the absolute best stuff!
