| This afternoon we've been evacuated, fire arrived maybe 1km or less from
where we are
I've heard a merchandise train lost one wheel, or the brakes were blocked,
whatever, the red wheel started a fire in the bushes of a small railway 2km from
here.
700+ fireman are on site, but it's difficult on the small montain, access
is difficult, all the fires aren't extinguished AFAIK.
We're back home, but it's not finished, we may have to evacuate again.
I'll post again when it's safe

Thanks for your wishes all!
We're back.
Fireman are still around, this morning with plane and heli, trucks etc.
Our famous wind "Mistral" is starting to blow again - it can make any fire be
unstoppable, so I guess they make very sure the fires are all fixed.
The fire arrived 500m (0.3 mile) maybe from home/shop, that was a close call...

Yes, it's fine, thank you!
For info, this is a NASA picture.
The red squares are the fires, the red line in the small moutain "la montagnette"

Surprisingly our highest is 38.7C, looking at a possible 40 somewhere here on
Monday, many areas very dry and fires almost guaranteed.

And as it’s regions that are not used to fires, people aren’t careful.
When you’re in the garrigue (scrubland) in south-eastern France, you know (or
are supposed to know…) not to make a barbecue in the forest in summer.
When you go in more northen forests, you don’t think it could ever be a problem…
but it’s one now.
We already had such fires in our nothern forests (Fontaineblau (SE of Paris)
for instance).
The drought problems are compounded with unpreparedness: people, firemen, equipment,
procedures….
I heard some Belgian firemen came to S-E France to learn about drought fires
recently. Wouldn’t surprise me if UK firemen were coming to France or going
to Spain to learn too.
@Sylvain: Seems your mayor wants to sue the SNCF. Good luck to him

Don’t think mods and rockers got around to using tanks etc but I may be wrong.
Quite a shock when you drive onto parts of Salisbury plains and a tank you hadn’t
noticed the other side of a hedgerow fires shells into the distance, certainly
makes you jump.

Tangent: I couldn’t find if ‘fix’ is the proper English term or what were the
proper English terms (except for the phrase ‘% contained’).
So, in case someone’s wondering, in French, a fire can be:
— fixé (fixed): doesn’t progress anymore,
— maîtrisé (mastered): most activity is down,
— circonscrit (circumscribed): firemen all around,
— noyé (drowned): firemen still watering the ground,
— éteint (extinguished): firemen go home.
| We also saw 2 fires close to Avignon.
We may be off and evactuated today again.

Yep, we'd those, and 5 of these over home half an hour ago:
As what I've heard 2 were sent from Greece.
If this is true, and fireman can help each others and share, then it's an

Personaly I've this one in my office, love it, it can pour water as round

At this exact moment it seems temporarily fixed - and anyway it's too late

I guess like yesterday we'll had alternate sleep time, I'll take the

I don't know much about southern France, but in some parts of the world,
wildfires are a natural occurrence and forest managers regularly perform
"prescribed burns" to mimic natural forest fires.
That being said, this was obviously not a prescribed burn and the conditions
that created it are not typical.

Yes, they did that the last days - they call them counter-fires (?).
Fireman control burn some places so the main fire doesn't find any fuel to
keep on progressing...
I talked to a fireman tonight, fires around seem "fixed" or "managed" (would
say Mr. Picky SylvainLS), but it'll take a whole week for the fires to be
completely drowned, and while this they expect restarts here and there.
A part of our town have no electric power (I learnt that fireman make them "turn
off" so Canadairs can pour water without risking more problems - but sometimes
some poles are destroyed/damaged in the process), and I guess some fiber/dsl
are down.
We're lucky right here.
We've now a fire truck sitting permanently 100m from home for watch, until
it's finished.
For the last hour, I've seen half a dozen trucks passing in front of my window,
a few feet away (those are HUGE trucks).
Problem is; we're in July and it's especially hot, dry, and flammable.
This fire was due to a train wheel spreading sparks; who'd imagine this?
What's the next improbable event?
NASA has interesting scientifical partnership with Japan, Europe, US... to use
satellites imagery to detect abnormaly high temps (fires):
https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/map/
This is a fine tool, you can use "Simple" or "Time based" especially while zooming,
playing with layers etc.
It's much much muc freaking impressive.

They made a video with a bit too dramatic music, but anyway, you can what happened
here:
https://twitter.com/i/status/1548309583663271938
We've a group of fireman and trucks "camping" 1 minute from here where there's
a water point.
They've I guess to drown every bit of our little moutain, and later on they'll
also clear the mess, I guess also mainly cutting branches or dead tress, also
to make an eventual fire not be able to develop fast...
It's said it'll take them a full week.

Just missing the deep voice saying ‘in your theaters next week’
“Engagez-vous, rengagez-vous, qu’ils disaient.” (Enroll, re-enroll, they said.)

Hot and dry. Tomorrow should be the worst… and the we get storms.
Sylvain has stopped his 1200ha barbecue on the east but there’s been a (for now)
11000ha one on the west (near Bordeaux) since Tuesday.
(1ha = 2.47 acres, don’t know what that makes in square libraries of Congress)

Only a few injured so far. 14000+ people evacuated. Many tourists there.
Sad thing is there’s two big fires near Bordeaux and one is criminal (the other
is due to a truck).

I'v found that on the Internets they'd conveniently use either bananas,
boulders or washing machines for scale.

1200ha is about 0.5776 milliwales, 2962 football pitch, or 0.0004 belgium.

That sounds terrible. Hang in there, the time will pass. We get occasional hillside
fires where I live. Not being able to go home is like hell for a homebody

We use acres in ketchupland. It means "big"

Sooo freaking hot, more to come.
Fires didn't reappear, or nothing major.
Part of the firemen will stay this week.
While this, I found this refreshing.

Could use one of those for fishing. Calico bass are better than boy scouts at

Thankfully, the fear is more material (houses) than human.
I don’t know why/how the fire took up again. I think it’s all about bad luck:
a gust of wind at the wrong time and the firemen busy elsewhere for a minute
too long.
| Let’s hope this crazy weather calms down soon.

Seems the weather is milder there (35°C/95°C) than on the west (44°C/111°F around
the bigger fires near Bordeaux (41°C/106°F here, 200km east of Bordeaux)).
It’s supposed to calm down tomorrow… with wind, storms and hail here in the evening.
Hopefully no winds for Sylvain’s fire.

And my balcony just went over 50°C (122°F)….

Pff what a day - evacuated at around 3pm, we could come back at 10pm.
The fires were really close (100/200m), we've seen on footage trucks between
home and the fires.
Right now, it's 1:25am, I can see trucks on the montain and the firemen flashlights
making a weird dance. They're manually fixing the tens and tens of fires
in the forest/bush.
Apparently our house was seen on our first TV channel, I've to find this.
We're back with the main PCs which we never quit, too precious.
Thanks all for your support!

| Gosh that's not good.
I saw it on the news last night.
Even here in Australia we are aware of this. I really hope it gets sorted as
I don't want more to suffer or loose anything.

You've no right to suffer for anyone, nobody asked you this.
But thank you - and I've seen fires in north Australia, NT and Queensland
too
Please take care of you!
