I have a new in the box Titanic. Box has very minor shelf ware but nothing extreme.
I would not say the box is 10/10 of though. Maybe 8 or 9 out of 10.

In exchange for it I want a large sealed set or sets from City/Town, Modular
building, Pirates, Castle, or Ninjago. Something with more playability or that
fits in a city. No interest in Star Wars, Technic or other models. I lived
in the Washington DC area.

Not quite. If OP finds a shop willing to do the trade, it can go through the
shop, as long as BL gets its fee from the transaction.

Niek.

Buyers can ask for a trade… but they can only trade with a seller (so that BL
can have its fee).

And there’s the sales tax to handle too and that’s complicated….

What?
So basically a buyer can sell against some value ordered?
Sorry, it's then a new concept I didn't know.

Yes, and proof of payment?
With tracking sent: "See, I shipped this Titanic. But maybe it didn't arrive?"

More than happy to do a purchase on BL and meet in person for the exchange.
That's why I tossed in my location. I really have no interest in shipping
the Titanic. I'd go broke trying to ship it internationally

Good idea, the Titanic broke itself trying to ship internationally…

Sorry, it's then a new concept I didn't know.

That’s called a ‘trade.’
Trades have been possible on BL for some time now (from BrickBay?) and, as proof,
there’s a special topic in the forum for them (the topic this thread is in ).

The only condition is that BL gets its fee.  That the seller is paid in kind
(payé en nature) is not BL’s problem… well, was not BL’s problem before
there were taxes to collect.

And there’s the sales tax to handle too and that’s complicated….

How the participants handle the transaction is a matter of trust.

Mmmh - with Taxes and how to solve an NPB with a Titanic shipped (but sunk sowhere
hee hee)... I wonder how this can still work...

Complicatedly… or trustfully.
Maybe pay with money and then refund when the other payment arrives?

But then again, it was simpler in olden times, when BL was only 20 people

To my eyes, selling isn't only a question of fees on that transaction.

Right now you've to show some info and get approved by whatever administration
process (I don't know about, I must admit).

This is to ensure some "reability" of the sellers.

Now if I can trade my brand new Boba Fett Cloud city against 12000 new parts,
as being a buyer - with no registration, no proof of anything, fine, I didn't
know.

Reliability?

Well, it depends on how you look at the trade.

You’re seing it as both members selling something to one another.  So you see
it as each member needing to be a reliable seller.
But that would mean there’s two transactions: A as seller with B as buyer, and
A as buyer with B as seller.
But that’s not what’s happeing.  It’s only one sale, with payment in kind.
The proof and reason for that is the fees: only one fee is paid.  Yes, it’s again
about fees but just as a tangible part of the process.
Would you want the trade to be double-fee-ed?

And there’s still one reliable/trusted seller in the loop, as with transactions
by with only money.  So it’s not less reliable than other transactions.
So I don’t think one can look at a buyer offering a trade as a hack around seller
verification.

I don't know!

If not, what's the 3/5 weeks delay (but said shorter recently) to open a
shop for?

Not to check ID, verify postal address or such?
If not - why would that take so long?

In short, and instead - you can come in Forum and say you're a buyer and
want to exchange Bobba Fetts? That's convenient.

But again - I didn't know, just find is a bit strange.

You have to find a seller willing to take them, and few sellers will pay full
value (in stock) that the buyer wants to get rid of. I cannot see it as being
a very lucrative way of getting rid of stock.

But again, there’s at least one seller involved, as with money, so a trade /

For this to work, the one registered is the Seller.
So the one bringing the part/set for trade is a Buyer.

Explain how NPB could work in this case - proof of shipping, tracking, delivery,
and if at the arrival it doesn't correspond, pictures of what've been
sent and pictures of what've been received?

Ah, and yes, Sales Taxes/Taxes? Paid with 6% parts of a Bobba Fett?

Sincerely, no problem, I didn't know that could work...
No pb if it's allowed.

Yes, the buyer is the one who pays in kind.  The seller is just an ordinary seller…
who accepts payments in kind.
It’s just some kind of off-site payment.

Explain how NPB could work in this case - proof of shipping, tracking, delivery,
and if at the arrival it doesn't correspond, pictures of what've been

It works the same way an NSS works.

Or again, it’s about trust…
or with a real payment being refunded when the seller receives their Bobba Fett
(well, more ‘paid-back’ than ‘refunded’, so the order is not cancelled/cancellable
and taxes are kept),
or the seller waits for their Bobba Fett payment before sending the parts/Modular…
it’s a problem to be handled between seller & buyer, like many off-line payments
or pick-ups.

And I said it’s exactly like an NSS because the question can be reversed: Eh,
I sent my Bobba Fett but the seller didn’t send me my parts/Modular!

Ah, and yes, Sales Taxes/Taxes? Paid with 6% parts of a Bobba Fett?

That’s the problem I talked about in my first post in this thread

And that’s a recent problem because BL didn’t have to collect taxes before.
So trades were simpler for the first 20 years of BL.  (It’s when you go over
20 you realize life was easier when you were under 20 )

But one solution now would be a real-payment-to-be-paid-back (can serve as a
security deposit/caution too).

Sincerely, no problem, I didn't know that could work...
No pb if it's allowed.

The forum topic is mainly to help find a partner.  It’s kind of ‘allowing’ but
it’s not necessary.
When BL doesn’t have to look at (and act on) payments, buyers & sellers make
their own agreements about payment, and BL can’t allow or forbid trades because
an order with off-site payment is paid when the seller says it’s paid.

No - with NSS/NPB someone can/has to bring a proof of payment.
How during a trade can the buyer send a proof of payment?

"See the Titanic picture, as of 13th april 1912 it was still in shipping"?

I know, I've a lot of fun with this example, sorry OP, not about you.

Escrow.
You *do* know what Escrow sounds in FRench, don't you?

No, with NSS you need a proof of shipping.

Here, you’d need (conditional, I’m not an admin) a proof of a trade agreement
(so that admin knows what’s the payment method) and shipping.

Buyer can file NSS if they sent and didn’t receive.
Seller can file NPB if they sent and didn’t receive.
BL needs the same kind and the same level of proof for both.

"See the Titanic picture, as of 13th april 1912 it was still in shipping"?

I know, I've a lot of fun with this example, sorry OP, not about you.

Well, it’s exactly the same as an NSS: seller gives a proof of shipping and it’s
enough for BL to remove the NSS.
Why couldn’t it be enough when it’s a payment that’s sent by the buyer?

You’re supposed to have been over 18 in 2005, 17 years ago, so you should be

Frankly, I don’t see why you see so many more problems with trades than with
other off-site payments (cheques for instance) or pick-ups.

Why couldn’t it be enough when it’s a payment that’s sent by the buyer?

Because if I'm a buyer I can send a transaction ID, a copy of an e-mail or
of my bank account.

If paid in Titanic and the seller receiving says "It was New, it arrived Used,
damaged and wet!!!", it becomes complicated to judge if buyer actually paid the
full price, because it depends of the quality (also) of what is received.

But I don't care, just was saying.

Frankly, I don’t see why you see so many more problems with trades than with
other off-site payments (cheques for instance) or pick-ups.

Because I didn't think it was allowed!

This is to ensure some "reability" of the sellers.

Reliability?

I don't know!

I meant: I think the word you’re looking for is re-LI-ability (bold doesn’t show
well with l & i).

I knew - vision going down, type fast, view less errors

But again, there’s at least one seller involved, as with money, so a trade /
payment in kind is not less secure than a sale / payment in money only.

What about just filling the Credit input with the full order amount if the trade
is received by the seller?

Sincerely, no problem, I didn't know that could work...
No pb if it's allowed.

To my eyes, selling isn't only a question of fees on that transaction.

Right now you've to show some info and get approved by whatever administration
process (I don't know about, I must admit).

This is to ensure some "reability" of the sellers.

Reliability?

Now if I can trade my brand new Boba Fett Cloud city against 12000 new parts,
as being a buyer - with no registration, no proof of anything, fine, I didn't
know.

What I really like about the fact that the fee is charged on only one side of
the trade is that it shows that BrickLink is being not only fair but also generous.
Imagine if ebay allowed trades, I bet they would want their 10% fee from both
sides of the transaction. BrickLink only wants their fee on one side of the transaction
and at only 3%.

As a side note, I have always thought BrickLink has been great in only charging
a 3% fee. What other site dedicated to commerce only charges 3%. I thought when
Lego purchased BrickLink that they would increase the fee. But even if they did
(or do in the future) to just 5% it would still be very low. So again, as a side
note, hats off to BrickLink and The Lego Group for keeping the fee set at 3%.

Sorry for getting off topic but I have always really appreciated the 3% fee and
thought this was a good topic to bring it up.

Damm, forgot about that one.

In all seriousness, I agree that BrickLink is quite generous when it comes to
fees. I don't know how the fee structure works on eBay or Amazon; just Googling
"eBay fee structure" turns up four different results: 6.5%, 12.35%, 12.9% and
15%. But in all four cases, the fee charged by BrickLink is significantly lower.

Furthermore, if the transaction is over $500 USD, the BrickLink fee is even less
than 3%: https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=38

BrickLink fees are calculated on the order total only, excluding shipping, taxes,
credits, and additional charges. By contrast, PayPal fees are calculated on the
grand total, including all of the above, since PayPal doesn't see the breakdown
of charges, only the final amount.

However, PayPal's fees aren't bad, either. Used to be 2.9% + $0.30 for
transactions in U.S. dollars, now it is 3.49% + $0.50 or something like that
but still nowhere close to 15%.

It's not the worse, but it's not so simple...

You've a base minimum like 0.30$/€ whatever for example (it counts a lot
on a 6.00€ order, it's 5% already).

Plus a charge that varies depending the payment mode and the country/zone.

So, if you say for instance 3% fees, it can be 3+1% if paid by Mastercard fro
US to EU, or maybe a bit more (close to 5% I'd say, long time didn't
check).

Plus the big chunck. If you go to shop accepting only one or a fee currencies
(like PLN, GBP...) they'll overcharge you (the buyer) up to 5% for conversion
fee+their currency rate (or the seller will convert the received USD to PLN and
it'll cost him 5%)...

In short, count roughly up to 10% and could be 15% on small transactions.

Its 0.35€ here at least.

Inside Europe is 2.9% and for UK + 1.29% (4.19%) or World + 1.99% (4.89%)

Plus conversions if so yeah...

PayPal Micropayments is 5% + 0.05€

Here ebay is better value than BL plus PayPal, if you list at the weekend every
second weekend. It is 12 and a bit percent but reduced to 0.3x this, plus 30p.
So about 4% plus 30p including getting paid fees.

  What?
So basically a buyer can sell against some value ordered?
Sorry, it's then a new concept I didn't know.

That’s called a ‘trade.’
Trades have been possible on BL for some time now (from BrickBay?) and, as proof,
there’s a special topic in the forum for them (the topic this thread is in ).

I thought trad between sellers.

And there’s the sales tax to handle too and that’s complicated….

Yes, and proof of payment?
With tracking sent: "See, I shipped this Titanic. But maybe it didn't arrive?"

How the participants handle the transaction is a matter of trust.

Mmmh - with Taxes and how to solve an NPB with a Titanic shipped (but sunk sowhere
hee hee)... I wonder how this can still work...

The buyer orders, and selects to pay by invoice, the seller applies a coupon
to the order for the agreed value of the trade and the the buyer pays the remainder.
That way, the fees and tax are still determined and paid on the full value of
the order. Then the buyer posts their set and the seller ships after they have
received it.

I guess I guessed that.
How BL will resolve an NPB? Proof of shipment, tracking, reception?

Anyway - I didn't know it was possible.
