| What can be done with excessive prices on BL?
When listing parts, I usually go by the current and past 6 month averages to
gauge what to list my parts for.
It seems I am more frequently coming across parts that are listed for insane
$ compared to average costs. For example, part 47398 in dark bluish gray. There
is one for over $8K !!!
I looked at the rest of their inventory and I assume this is a typo as the rest
of their inventory seems reasonably priced. From personal experience, I know
mistakes happen. I've had other users let me know when they see something
like this in my inventory, and I just found one today on my own - $70.08 for
a part that I intended to be $.08.
Is there a mechanism BL can put in place to find and either notify sellers of
these instances or unlist them to keep the average prices more accurate?
I often sell music on a website called discogs.com and when I've had a typo
on a listing ($1200 instead of $12.00), the item gets flagged as a violation
until the price is corrected. Would be nice if the same could happen on BL.
On the flipside, I've always wondered if there is something nefarious going
on like money laundering or inflating inventory values for tax situations. I
have seen some of these outrageous prices in the past 6 months sold, so wonder
who in their right mind would spend $20 on parts that usually sell for only $.10.
Maybe that is from watching Ozark for so long!!

| Whenever I think it's a typo, I kindly message the seller asking them if
it is (most of the time it is). Because I would like someone to do the same to
me as well.

To bring this back to the original posting... I reached out to the seller/store
in question and let them know about the prices I saw. While they never responded,
I just perused their wedge plate items and none of them seem to have the $8K
prices, so I'm assuming it was not their intent to sell them for so much.

I usually choose "frivolous listing" and that usually gets the attentions of
the admins although many of these lots are in fact listed in error without any
malicious intentions at all.

After listing new items for sale, it may be a good practice to check your own
shop and sort it by Price, then look at the lowest priced and highest priced
items. Most pricing mistakes will be easy to see.
I knew of one former BL seller who had written some kind of computer script that
would regularly (daily?) compare all of their shop prices with the price guide
and adjust the prices to match their desired price parameters. That was not
so much to catch errors (which of course it would do), but to maximize sales
by adjusting prices up or down to match the current supply and demand.

Great suggestion. I just did that and caught a few that had typos. None quite
as excessive as $8K though...

After listing many more wedge plates this morning, I'm not sure this is a
typo anymore as there were several with the same $8K price. Perhaps it was an
issue with a bulk upload of inventory. I will reach out to the seller to at least
let them know....

| On the aspect of price setting based on average values, I suggested in the past
(and I stick with it to have a 90-percentile average next to the current
mathematical average.
This way, the highest and lowest prices will be excluded from the calculation,
resulting in a much more meaningful average. At least not polluted by the extreme
outliers.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it legal to resell copyrighted works?
For example, if I buy a CD, then I can (legally) sell it to someone else without
a license. Or maybe I am not understanding the purpose of the site?

I'm not sure what you are implying is illegal in the US.
Discogs website removing the listing because of the price.
Me listing the price for an unreasonable price (accidentally)
or selling music 2nd hand, which is perfectly legal in the US - otherwise 1000's
of record stores & online sellers would be breaking the law via various portals
(discogs, ebay, amazon, etc...)

| Instances of abuse go both ways, it seems. Consider this store:
https://store.bricklink.com/Bricks4Pieces?itemID=298895978#/shop?o={%22showHomeItems%22:1}
Their minimum shipping cost is $11, and most of their lots are priced at $0.0025.
It is impossible to place an order that benefits anyone but the seller here
because none of the lots have more than 2 pieces available, and there is a 20
lot limit.
Every order is potentially 1,000% profit. Looking at the frequency of buyer feedback,
people seem to be incredibly happy at being ripped off.
The consequence to the price guide is a net reduction in averages, whether you
go by current items for sale, or quantity average sold, the price guide is negatively
impacted. Meanwhile the seller is profiting off of the misdirection.
You cannot list an item like this in any other marketplace. Amazon, for example,
would flag this as a pricing error and deactivate all listings. Do it enough
and they'd terminate your selling privileges.

Certainly smells like fee avoidance. Ironically, other than one item in their
entire store, their prices and limits are also seemingly built to ensure you
pay their fee for orders under $5.00.

I'm sorry, but this (somewhere common) fee avoidance isn't in the BrickLink
list:
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=97
In short, you can sell 0.001$ parts and invoice 100$ shipping.
I've seen such "weird" pricing.
It's one of the reasons why Price Guide should NOT exclude any price.
Many are justified, and many "more expensive" are in fact less, and reciprocally.

Maybe fee avoidance, but I think more likely the mindset that ridiculously cheap
prices will get them more orders and they can make up the difference with the
lot limit and the $3.25 order fee. It just seems like a ridiculous length to
go to in order to avoid... $0.10 in fees per order? The PayPal fee applies to
the entire payment regardless, so they're only avoiding Bricklink's 3%

In other news, yeah, they must really like that one hair piece.

https://store.bricklink.com/Bricks4Pieces?itemID=298895978#/shop?o={%22showHomeItems%22:1}

What about this store ? https://store.bricklink.com/zickan#/shop?o={%22sort%22:6,%22itemType%22:%22P%22,%22catID%22:%225%22,%22showHomeItems%22:0}
It provides multiple cheap 1 piece per lot parts.. but average lot value is €1
so buyer should compensate the difference by buying another lot of at least ~€2
euro in value.
Is this a good practice?

I don't see the problem. They have lots of high quantity lots so bulk buyers
can easily make the lot average and still add some low quantity cheap lots to
their order.

| I don't think anything should be done. If I have a piece valued at $10 and
want to sell it for $0.01 or $10k, that should be my choice.
Sure, it might skew the 6 month price guide up a bit, but that isn't even
something sellers should rely heavily on (though many do).

I agree, this is really the issue - sellers should be able to say what they want
for an item. Who would get to say what the limits are? So if you had a piece
that was $10 average sales over six months, and someone wanted to go below 10%
/ $1 to get rid, is that acceptable. Is 10x / $100 too high, and so on.
To make matters worse, pricing is dynamic. If a rare part is re-released, the
prices can drop significantly. It may have been a $50 piece one month and listed
at that price by a seller, but soon become a $1 part if they are suddenly in
plentiful supply. It is unlikely to sell at $50, but should it actually be removed?
And vice versa, if a piece suddenly becomes hard to find due to a popular MOC
- remember the black dino necks for the Arvo Brothers Alien MOC. They went from
an average of about 20c to over $10 in a couple of weeks. And if the current
average was 20c but an informed seller realised they were about to go up in price
and listed at $20 instead, would they get removed?
Plus there is regionality in pricing. If a set or part is common in the US I
expect it to have a low average. Whereas if I have one in the UK, why should
I conform to the US price? After all if a UK buyer buys from a US seller, they
have to pay VAT and international postage which can make a low price suddenly
much higher to them.

| Wow yeah. But the first few listings are only 2 dollarsish. |

I was thinking more along the lines of setting up an account to "buy" from oneself
in order to drive up the price, but that works too

While that is plausible too, someone is paying BL fees on those transactions
so I'm not sure it would be worth paying those fees just to drive up the
price.

How do you know they are paying the fees? You can run up fees and leave them
unpaid for a while before bricklink do anything. And don't they stay in the
price guide even if the seller is suspended for non payment.
