In the process of organizing my childhood sets and comparing with BL(and Rebrickable)
inventories, I've noticed that I have a lot of 1978-1979 Classic Space and
Town sets with the open-stud version of the 3062 1x1 cylinder element - 3062b
- but the BL inventories for these sets list the older, closed-stud version,
3062a.

To be clear, my parts are not mixed up with later sets, replacements, etc: I've
kept my 1970s/early '80s sets intact and isolated from later sets; I have
never purchased this element separately from Lego , BL, or anywhere else; and
the number of each color of this element in my collection precisely matches the
total number BL says I should have given the sets that I own.

The only difference is that for most colors I have more of the open-stud "b"
variant of this element than the BL inventories say I should have. In one case
- trans-blue - all 16 of my pieces are the open-stud variant while BL inventories
say all 16 should be closed-stud. For every other color, BL says I should have
a mix of open and closed-stud versions, and I do have a mix - but for almost
every color my mix is different than BL says it should be - I invariably have
more open-stud versions and fewer closed-stud versions than BL says I should
have.

My guess is that Lego was transitioning from the close-stud to the open-stud
version in 1978 and 1979, and perhaps those of us in the US got more of the open-stud
version in our sets during those years than our friends in Europe did, where
many sets seem to have come out slightly earlier than they did in the U.S. But
in that case I would expect the BL inventories for many of these sets' US
versions to list the open-stud version as an alternate inventory item. But a
spot-check of a couple of sets indicates that's not the case.

Would love to hear others' thoughts and experiences with this. Thanks so
much!

Sorry to reply to my own post, but I've started looking at the instructions
for some of these sets, and some of them show the 3062b open-stud version in
the instruction steps. Interesting...
