Hey Guys,

I'm sure this must have been discussed in the past but I can't find any
relevant threads so apologies if that is the case (+any links appreciated).

For those of us who part out new sets how many copies of each do you tend to
go with? I'm a little hesitant with going to deep in a single set in case
it doesn't perform to well.

Cheers

Hi there,

When I started parting out new sets, I began with two of each. Volume and variety
are both key factors in making sales, but unfortunately it is impossible to do
both without a very large, initial financial investment.

My advice would be to increase the number of different lots into your store first.
You can then become a little bolder in the quantities of sets you part out, once
you have a solid foundation of parts available.

Regards,

Dave

Thanks Dave, that's actually a real relief to hear as that's pretty much
what I've been doing. Stocking up like this prior to a first sale definitely
raises the anxiety level though (also resisting the urge (mostly) to break open
my investment sets!)

It depends on the size of the set. For the really big sets, I usually part out
a quantity of 2. For most medium size sets, I usually part out a quantity of
4. For the small sets, I will part out 6 to 8.

Thanks for that Rick, really appreciate you taking the time to share. Starting
to feel a little more confident I'm on the right track.

It's a good question.

But the question’s form doesn’t elicit a definitive answer. What you’re asking
is what percentage of a given set’s lot purchase, is parted out versus
kept NISB?

Back in the day when we were doing bulk set buys, our practice was to keep them
in storage for a few years before making the evaluation of whether to part-out
or maintain as NISB. The thinking was to let the newer set find more of it’s
market value (settle) before taking any decision with what was often a considerable
investment. That’s another thing regarding this: for a number reasons, we went
big or not at all with set buys. Otherwise the money went elsewhere.

But, there are also benefits to a BL store parting low numbers (onesie-twosie)
of a given set. Namely, in driving traffic into your inventory, via the WantList
notification emails sent out.

For us though, we either parted or kept all, never the half measure in this regard.
Do I have the regrets hindsight often brings as the years unfold? Plenty of them.
But all-in-all, we did it right. As my father would say “Make your money and
move-on. There’s always a better deal awaiting you around the corner in the resale
business”

There is another way of reading it which also gives a completely different answer.
That is, how many of the same set should a seller buy in the first place. Which
has multiple answers depending on purchase price, number of sealed sets already
on the market, number of unique minifigs, number of high value but low demand
pieces, number of new parts that are high in value but dropping fast, storage
space, theme, size of existing store, price of set vs price of shipping it, ...

Thanks Yorbrick and Popsicle, some really interesting points. Just for clarity
the question was to do with what we decide to do once we have considered all
the points above. So literally interested in what every one's decisions are,
and how we come to them.

Well, the answer will vary for each store based on probably most importantly,
how much capital you have to invest in sets. Other factors include, number of
lots (lower lot count and less work to part factors in), the mix of parts in
the set (sometimes you have a high part out value but some unique high priced
low volume parts).

Once you do this for a while, you will be able to just scroll through the parts
list and KNOW what sells.

Most of the time, I shoot for 10x on average size sets. But at one time I would
do 2x, then it was 5x etc etc.. as your store grows, keep re-investing.

I re-invest on average 30% of my sales into new inventory. Dont force it, wait
for a good deal then spend it.. there will be times nothing looks good to you
so just wait.

Even though we all ultimately sell lego, every does it a liiitle bit different
in terms of buying, selling, strategies etc.. I have "stolen" what I would call
best practices from other sellers and then eventually you find your own way of
doing it once you have some experience under your belt.

Thank you for taking the time to answer - I'll certainly be happy if I make
it to a point where reinvesting 30% keeps the store sustained. I suspect it will
be 100% for a good while!
