| Hi all,
I recently opened a store and have had a steady flow of small orders for parts.
I also have about 70 sets listed with about another 100 still to list, but was
wondering if trying to sell used sets is a viable option.
I have noticed that there are quite a few stores that sell parts and minifigures
only, no sets. Is this the way to go or is it just a waiting game for the right
buyer of sets.
Any feedback would be helpful.
Thanks in advance

In my experience, sets always sell slower than parts, and individual minifigure,
just be patient, and price them reasonably.
Thanks, NG

Cheers for the reply.
I thought patience was the key thing.

I don't have much experience with sets, but minifigures always sell like
crazy for me. Except for those few themes (looking at you, Lego Movie 2 figs),
my minifigures always go super fast.

I think a lot will depend on how much time your willing to spend selling your
Lego be that a quick one off set sale or whether your happy to pick and process
lots of parts orders. You should generally find you can make more money selling
them as parts/minifigures than a complete set but I guess a lot will depend on
the set your selling and what the demand is for it

Thanks for your input.
Being retired I have plenty of time.
I guess I'm just a bit old school and like to see Lego built into sets.

Think of it this way, by selling parts you're helping buyers complete sets
and MOCs

I completely understand as it can seem a shame to split an otherwise complete
set however by selling those parts separately the way to look at it is that you're
actually contributing to a much wider range of different Lego builds and projects
with the added satisfaction that almost every part sold is getting used for a
specific purpose. I'm fairly sure that many people who buy used sets are
quite often only doing so for some of the more unique parts/minifigures or just
to get certain colours in bulk with little intention of building the original
model unless its a very desirable and iconic build that is

It totally depends on what the sets are and how you price them. I see you have
a lot of reasonably modern City. Many of those don't sell so well unless
priced quite aggressively. When you can get similar new sets for RRP -30% (often
including postage), a used one needs to be listed at quite a low price to compete,
unless it is something that has not been redone and is in demand.

Thank you everyone for all your input, it gives me something to think about.
I think i'll wait and see what happens and re-evaluate the sets in a few
months time.
Cheers all

| I make the decision between sets and parts by checking the sale prices for the
set versus the part out value.
There are many sets that have a much higher part out value than sale price as
a set.
If I have a set with a box in decent shape, and I'm able to get a large enough
mark up, I will sell as a set.
However, if there are problems, such as a beat up box, or if the potential mark
up isn't great, then I will usually decide to part it out and sell it that
way.
Of course, there are other considerations, such as if that set sells quickly,
I have the money, whereas, I know that many parts will take a long time to sell
before I make the money. That is a calculation about how patient you are.

Thanks for your input.
I hadn't thought about looking at the part out price before but will do in
future.
I think I will give everything a few months yet as I have only been open 6 weeks
and it seems a bit hasty to break perfectly good sets b4 giving them a chance.
