| Does anyone on here happen to know why 14417 and a few other towball pieces have
recessed studs, and not top studs like most other pieces? Just want my curiosity
itch scratched.
Thanks,

Wild guess:
Considering the plastic for these is special because it needs to be strong and
it needs to keep its form and size to keep its grip on the ball, I see two non-exclusive
possibilities:
1. it makes the parts stronger,
2. the plastic doesn’t allow for full studs.
And there’s the “why not” reason too

Movable parts need to not have friction with other parts, if they had LEGO on
the stud on top it could make unintended collisions.

Oh that's smart...
But the logo would be on the studs.
So you mean, don't have logo or any extra, so the plate is perfectly aligned,
and the rotation more precise?

I think the real reason is to save on material, note that all new tow balls from
2014 to today have hollow studs.

New Elementary states in the article introducing these parts in 2013: "The studs
are all recessed, which adds further flexibility to building such as permitting
offset." [https://www.newelementary.com/2013/12/new-legends.html#more]
which makes perfect sense: hollow studs offer extra connectivity for both bar
and offset connections.
You state that 'most other pieces' would have solid studs. For the regular
bricks, plates and slopes you are right, but have you actually counted the number
of parts that have hollow studs? I believe most special and 'modified'
parts have hollow studs and I think those outnumber the parts with solid studs.
