Sets 939-1 and 940-1
These changes are based on 1 set 939-1 with granulated trees , 2 sets 939-1 with
plastic Pines and 1 set 940-1 with Plastic Pines. All were bought by me sealed
and opened to check what was inside. All original signs are still in their boxes.
According to catalogues the trees changed in 1975 from Granulated Trees to Plastic
Pines.
Year on the boxes with Pines is still 1973 or none. So I made a good guess of
the years by checking the timeline of roadsigns I am working on.
939-1 1973/1974 Granulated Trees, all signs have bar-bottom
939-1 1976-1979 Plastic Pines, 6 signs have tube-bottom, P 300m Sign
940-1 1975-1978 Plastic Pines, except for the STOP sign, all signs have tube-bottom,
P Large Sign
Note that all Road Signs have Embossed Print. These sets were sold 1973-1979.
Road Signs with Surface Print came in 1980.
When I checked the inventory back in 2009, I didn’t notice that the Train Sign
had 2 variants. The bold variant of the level crossing sign wasn’t even in the
catalog untill 2011. So I checked all Boxes and Road Signs again.
Timeline of a few of these Road Signs.
A rough guess is that these Embossed Print changes happened somewhere between
1976 and 1979. It’s even harder to tell when TLG switched from bar-bottom to
tube-bottom and even more pecular that the Surface Printed Signs came in 1980
with a mix of bar- and tube-bottom.
- 649pb08a came before 649pb08b
- 675px1 came before 675p01
In 1980 675p01 came with Surface Print
- 649pb10b came before 649pb09
In 1988 the 2 Piles came back with Surface Print:
- 649pb06a came before 649pb06
In 1985 649pb06a came back with Surface Print
- 649p01 came before 649p01b
In 1980 649p01 came back with Surface Print
It looks like some older and better prints were replaced in the 70's and
came back in the 80's.
