I think it is true but it is hard to prove such request.
The plate
was produced about the same year.

If we would approve change requests, just because we think it could be true,
it would become a mess. I prefer proof, especially for these old sets. All proof
we have at the moment are the instructions.
With these old sets, it's very easy to switch parts, when you have a lot
of them.
Your link is a good example for it, because this seller's taxi even has truck
wheels.

But I think it is true. It is very hard to prove anything for sets this old.
I found two more links:

Third photo attached, taken from www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de
I also found one with two 2x4 black plate.
It is very likely that only later copies came with one black 4x4 plate.

Thank you for your reply Martin.
The problem with these sets is that no one will ever open a sealed box again,
because of the value. I opened a lot of sealed sets in the past, sometimes I
think I should never had done that
So it looks like there will never be any proof if the 4x4 plate came with this
set. But also no proof that it didn't.
Going through Legoland instructions and Bricklink inventories it looks like in
all early Legoland sets 2x3 and 2x4 plates were used for small roofs.
As for the
they came in:
The Taxi was released in 1971 and sold in 1971-1972.
The two other vehicles were released in 1972 and definately came with 2x4 plates.
That is why I have my doubts: why would TLG release new sets with 2x4 plates
and in the same year change 1 old set to 4x4 plate??
came in sets
I will keep this request open for a while!

I also found this

and multiple used sets on Ebay (with box and instructions) which also have the
4x4 plate. Why would someone replace the 2x4 plates (the more common part at
the time) with a less common part which is not even shown in the instructions?

My theory would be that the 1x2 tile holds better on a 4x4 plate than on two
2x4 plates. The police cars have a 1x1 plate on the roof while all other sets
from 1972 don't have one, so it was not necessary to include a 4x4 plate
in them.

So here is the photo of mine. The box and instruction are from the left. From
the right there is no box. Both are bought at the same time. The right one also
has a 4x4 plate (Mould B Pat. pend.)
I understand the concerns and the desire for proof. But this case is more of
a theoretical nature, because Lego itself certainly didn't take it that seriously
at the time. As an example, I have many supplement packs in their original condition,
where the content was also filled more according to availability. Of course,
even without tangible evidence often more parts are included, sometimes fewer
or sometimes the quantities of colors are different in mixed boxes. I don't
know if the production process was already fully automated in 1971, but I suspect
that people were still involved. Maybe the trainee grabbed my packs...
No matter what decision is made, thanks for your input and time
PS. If you look at the front of the instructions with a magnifying glass, you
will also see a 4x4 plate on top. Depends a bit on your own imagination though

- plate 4x4 was already introduced
- a huge lot of used taxi's with 4x4 plate on the internet (no Pat Pend evidence
though)
- your 4x4 actually shows a Pat Pend plate with molding pips on the side

| Please make changes to the following inventory:
* Add 1 Part 3031 Black Plate 4 x 4 (Alternate) (match ID 1)
Comments from Submitter:
in my set was an 4x4 Plate (Pat. pend. Mould A)

The instruction show 2 plates 2x4
I can't approve this request, unless you can deliver proof that you opened
a sealed set or that you have different instructions. Please upload images if
you have somekind of proof.

You're right, I didn't think that far. I opened the set myself many years
ago and while I'm sure the plate was in there then, I have no proof of that.

Well, if you are sure your new set came with a 4x4 plate, then I would be fine
with approving this request. It is not necessary to have different instructions.
I also found this
https://www.flickr.com/photos/_tiler/23988932864/in/photostream/
and multiple used sets on Ebay (with box and instructions) which also have the
4x4 plate. Why would someone replace the 2x4 plates (the more common part at
the time) with a less common part which is not even shown in the instructions?
| | My instructions don't show a 4x4 plate either. Please cancel the request

|
My theory would be that the 1x2 tile holds better on a 4x4 plate than on two
2x4 plates. The police cars have a 1x1 plate on the roof while all other sets
from 1972 don't have one, so it was not necessary to include a 4x4 plate
in them.

came in sets
I will keep this request open for a while!
Thank you for your input.

Attached another one for sale in France.
It is very likely that this set came with black 4x4 plate.
Assuming this, we have no idea if some early copies came with 2 black 2x4 plates?

|
I'm convinced and approved the request.
- plate 4x4 was already introduced
- a huge lot of used taxi's with 4x4 plate on the internet (no Pat Pend evidence
though)
- your 4x4 actually shows a Pat Pend plate with molding pips on the side
Thank you for all your input.

I think the reason that LEGO change from 2x4 Plate to 4x4 Plate is that the old
2x4 trans-clear slope and especially the trans-clear 1x2 bricks had a very bad
clutch power and to easy come lose. With the 4x4 Plate it stay on better.
