Hi 👋🏼

First time poster here. I managed to buy a complete (apparently) millennium falcon
recently and decided to start building it. Having checked it, at first I though
it was great as the individual bags were all re sealed and put into the correct
box, however as soon as I started I realised that although the original bags
were used, the contents of each was just random pieces!

This is my first build where I’ve not followed the numbered bags with the instructions
so wondered how you thought I should approach it? Should I spend days sorting
the pieces first? Should I somehow sort them into what bags they’re meant to
be in? (Not even sure if there’s a list of what pieces go in which bag?), should
I sort by piece type? Colour? Etc

Essentially… help!

I'd sort by part type (bricks, plates, etc level of detail), then colour.
Stick them in wide trays or containers you can easily see in.

I inventory and build large used sets (and MOCs) frequently, though rarely this
large, and my approach for organizing a big pile is to start large and progress
towards smaller pieces. Put everything together, then start by pulling out the
largest pieces and putting them off to the side in individual piles -- in
this set, that'll be the half-cones for the cockpit, radar dish, large plates,
rectangular technic bricks, large tiles, and large wedge plates. Then start pulling
out the next-largest pieces, putting them in containers or bags if there's
a lot of a specific part. Keep going as far as you want -- with some sets
I'll go down to 2x4 sizes and then pick out parts from the loose pile, and
with others I'll sort into every individual piece. Don't bother separating
by color. It'll take a few hours, but it'll be worth the time.

Personally this is exactly the type of build I love - I've built all the
Lego Star Wars UCS sets (and other large sets, like the Mos Eisley Cantina etc.)
from a huge pile, including MF and SSD. To me that's half the fun of Lego
and has been since I was about four (almost 50 years ago). Finding the parts
I need adds to the challenge of building the model (and extends the build-time).
That to me is perfect.

The thing is, now you have it, you might as well build it - dig in and enjoy!!!

I'm unsure if you have an IKEA near you, but they have these little organizers
called "NOJIG" that come in various sizes from 100x100x50mm up to 248x349x50mm.
Fantastic for organizing all your little parts during a build. Very cheap, 50¢
here in US so 35£ ish there in the UK?

If you have access, highly recommend. My kids have dozens floating around the
house with Hairy Potter and various other parts in various stages of assembly.
