| I am new to Bricklink and apologize if this note is in the wrong place sent to
the wrong person. I hope you can forward it to the proper channel.
I am looking for a pair of white parts. The Lego Element ID is 474001 and is
called a Parabola 016. How would I search for it on the Bricklink website?
I tried the Search link and it came up with nothing. Does that mean that none
of the sellers on the site have this piece?
Again, my apologies if I am sending a note to the wrong person. Thanks for any
help you can offer.

| Element IDs are all searchable on BrickLink, too. You don't need to go to
Brickset for that. Just type 474001 into the search bar up top.

| Does that work for all element IDs? I'm almost sure that I've used brickset
because I can't find it on BL.

| I would say 99% of them. Everything except the absolute newest of parts.

You can simply search for 474001 in the top search bar. It should have brought
up this part.
Another way to search on Bricklink is to browse the catalog by category and get
familiar with Bricklink's terminology; in this case it is called a dish of
size 2x2 (measured in modules of 1 stud each).
If a search like this does not bring you to a catalog page, it does not mean
that no-one has the part, simply that you haven't found the catalog entry
yet. This may be because LEGO frequently issues new element IDs for existing
parts, always for new colors or new materials, but sometimes also for design
changes that are not considered different for most end users. Those numbers have
to be registered on Bricklink first. These 6 digit numbers indicate a combination
of design Id (like 4740 above), color, material and version.
It is a funny co-incidence that in the case of 474001 both part number 4740 and
color number 1 are part of the element id. That is normally not the case.

It’s not exactly coincidence as it was on purpose: for older parts, the DesignID
(mould) and the colour number (2 digits) were used to compose the ElementID by
simple concatenation.
I’m not sure if TLG didn’t realize color numbers would go above 99 real quick
or if the scheme already accounted for that but that was a quick way to make
ElementIDs.
(I think there actually already was colour with numbers above 99 (Modulex), unless
those were renumbered later.)
I think the new ElementID scheme (sequential) came when TLG started using SAP.

Indeed. 300101 301001 etc ... more than coincidence.
