Hello good people of BL,

I have a question regarding selling used sets and the investment that comes with
it.

So I purchased my first used bulk of LEGO from a 14 yr old kid who had been collecting
sets for 10 years. I bought this bulk for 250 euro and managed to identify and
sort out 95 sets, mainly Star Wars, City, Mixels, Ninjago, Legends of Chima,
LEGO Movie, Marvel and a few sets like SpongeBob and Cars.

The total used value of the sets complete would be 1600 euro. I need to invest
150 euro to get all sets complete. There are no boxes and no instructions and
no books. I also need to complete a bunch of minifigures. Not all of them are
complete and some are missing. Which might add another 50 euro. So my total spend
would be 450 euro.

What would be the best approach? Complete the most valuable sets first and sell
those? Or get them all complete first? Or drop the small 5 euro sets and ignore
completing them? Sell them incomplete as is?

I would also have probably a few kilo of loose LEGO bricks left which I could
resell as bulk.

This is my first time doing this. Any advise is deeply appreciated.

Thanks,

That set is actually not there, just one carriage, so ignore that one.

I would;

- Complete the valuable (sought after) sets first. for example the 8088. If parts/minifigs
are needed, you need to decide if the extra investment is worth it to complete
the set. Complete sets with instructions sells quicker.
- Forget about the low value (unpopular) sets. Sell the parts separate.

Thanks for this. Are instructions still that important considering they are readily
available on the internet and apps, etc.?

Yeah, maybe focus on the high value sets first, and see how that goes.

I don't want to go into selling loose bricks, I don't have the time and
space for that, I just want to sell sets or bulk.

They certainly make some sets sell faster, but not necessarily more valuable.
So say you can buy one star destroyer for $110 with instructions, one for $100
without instructions. Some collectors will only want the set with instructions,
and will pick that one up first. Others won't care at all. If both are listed
at $100, the one with instructions will obviously sell first, because why not?
It's free instructions in that case.

Hard to tell from what you wrote if you have actually already separated out all
the sets and confirmed the missing pieces and figs. If that's the case,
go ahead and list whatever is already complete. Instructions are not that important
generally for the sets you listed so don't worry about those.

The most important thing is to ensure that sets you're listing are accurately
described and only listed as "complete" if you have all figures and pieces.

I've found that sets don't sell well if even missing a few common pieces.
The exception is star wars sets will still sell without the figs as long as they
are priced accordingly.

As to the question of whether or not to complete sets, it all depends on cost
to complete vs value of the set vs the value of the parts that you do have vs
the time you think it will take to sell.

It seems a lot of the sets you list are not likely to be in much demand and you
would need to price them very cheaply to get them to sell as a smaller store.
Not sure where you got the 1600 euro calculation, but if you used 6 month average
sold, you're probably actually looking at more like 1200 since you'll
need bigger discounts than the larger stores if you want to sell them within
the next year.

If you were looking at 1600 as the average for sale price, you're probably
looking at more like 800 euro.

If you are wanting to try to sell all the sets individually on a local marketplace,
take an additional 50% off of your estimate.

If looking to sell the whole thing as a bulk sale on a local marketplace, my
guess is you could get about 400 potentially.

Personally, I'd create several wantlists and classify each set by value and
importance. Pick from sellers that have the parts for the most valuable sets
wantlist. Then I'd look at those 2nd and 3rd tier wantlists and buy parts
that I can pick up cheap and save on shipping or get to store minimums, ect for
only a little more of an investment. You can click the check mark on/off for
each list to view those parts separately for each vendor.

Instructions typically add more value than they cost on desirable sets
